'71 cb175 take 3!

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

well all back together. I had the timing slightly off, will need to be remedied. Other than that just needs to have the carbs tuned. I made friends with a local dyno tuner, will let him take it from here I think.

Please please tell me how that experience goes! And their procedure...etc. I'll have to go that route too I guess. Didn't really wanna drop the coin but ya know.

Awesome progress sir.

Will do! Yea its $250 but I just dont want to deal with it at this point. would rather spend that time riding. One a side note the top end rebuild was well worth it. Was certainly losing power from the lower compression.

Took the time to detail the bike today. Running pretty well but definitely needs an expert touch to tune it properly. Will likely happen next week

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

So i came home from work, was locked out of everything but the garage since I took the wrong keys. And this is what happened after a few hours. Gonna need a new seat and cowl.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Still tinkering. Made the tray for under the seat, still needs welding, changed out the bars for joker machine clip ons, and modified the headlight brackets to have room for them. Next is the new seat and rear cowl. I will be relocating the tail light into it.

Quick question. How wide is normal for the clip ons? I have them at 28 inches, but the bars are all the way out in the bracket, can easily go in a bit.

Also, my cables are now way too long. How do I go about getting properly length ones? I thought about just getting on the phone with motion pro and giving them measurements of what I need.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

I'm running joker machine clip ons. I didn't have to shorten cables one bit. Just routed them like this. I at about 23" wide . Only cables I have are brake and throttle and clutch

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Yeah I have the same clip ons. I went ahead and tucked the bars in a bit. now its 24. Hmm Maybe I'l play with routing them a different way then

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

New pan is welded into the bottom of the seat. I decided I am going to take the time to fill all the holes in the frame, clean it all up really well, and try to get it to my painter by Friday. The new seat is going to have to wait til the fall. Overall I'm very pleased with the changes, wish I went this route right off the bat.

Re: '71 cb175 take 2!

Because I just can't leave well enough alone bike is completely apart. I decided to go piece by piece and make everything exactly what I want. Should have done it to start but oh well live and learn. Since I'm now using clip ons I ground down the top triple removing the ugly bumps for the risers. I also completely took apart the front end. I removed all the tabs but one needed for the brakes on the lower forks, and also figured out a way to lower it. It's actually quite easy once I had it apart. I think I will be extending the swinging arm 2 inches, and will lower the front the same amount so they continue to work in concert with each other.

Right now the parts I've grinded are sanded to 120, still a long long way to go.

Re: '71 cb175 take 2!

Why would you want to lower the front end or lengthen the swingarm? That works on a drag bike but not so well on the street. Most of the lengthened swingarms we see here are not safe at any speed and even if they were, they are detrimental to handling as a rule.

Your bike will work and look nice with good mufflers and fenders to finish it off. You have fitted great tires and it looks usable - why make it less so?

Im just flirting with the idea nothing has been done yet. I have an extra front end and swingarm so even if I decide it was a dumb idea its no biggie to revert it.

One lower fork down

Re: '71 cb175 take 2!

Well the experimental front end is done and awaiting my frame which is currently at the painter. I lowered it by taking a second set of tube guides, removing the top lip, and taking 1 inch out of the springs. Has a nice amount of preload, and works properly. If I decide it was a bad move I can always swap out with the original front end.

Extending the rear swing arm is gonna raise the back of the bike :)

Only if it is fitted with longer shocks....... Stretching the swingarm with stock chocks lowers the rear end. Stretching swingarms is rarely a good idea.

Which "top lip" did you remove? And was it above the circlip groove?

I guess that would be true if you extend the swing arm anywhere in between the pivot and lower shock mount. Of you add from the shock mount to the axle it would raise. All the sport bike ones I have installed it raises because they add material to the sliders ;)
