1975 XLCH Sportster Hardtail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

NoHonestlyitsme

Build it and they will love
So I am going to catch this up on here from another forum. I was more active here when I built my XS1100 Cafe, So why not stick around?

Well, here we are again, a shit box bike that needs to be saved. Long story short, it looks to be a '72 Motor in a '75 Frame with a welded on Bolt on Hard tail. Clearly owned by the wrong people for some time, but I suspect the person who originally built it in the late 70s had a decent bike. I have been looking for a beater platform to use some of the parts I've saved up for a few years and this one came to me cheap. by cheap, I will say $450. It doesn't run, but it did come with a classic "I was riding it up until last month" warranty.

I will try to get this thing in the right direction and see where it ends up. I have built a few bikes, but never a rigid bike so this will be more of a learning experience than anything. It will be a bit of a Father/Son deal with my dad too.

Pros:
$450 w/NH reg
Hexagon Oil Tank
Flawless Peanut tank
Mikuni Carb
Borrani Front Rim
DEW MFG Triple Trees
4+ ? Showa Forks
Decent Tires

Cons:
Everything was painted black or red.
Hardtail is eh
Rake job is eh
"Jockey Shifter"
Door bell push start
Overall dangerous wiring
Punisher "Theme"
Leaking Head gasket
I had to buy it at night

Anyways.. Here is what I started with and we'll see what happens. Trust me, I basically bought it for the motor and barely the roller, everything else sucks.

So 4 Hours after I got it it looks like this. The Front rim has also been stripped back to Aluminum and is in great condition thankfully.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

After some detective work, I have found the drilled rotor to fit this Borrani Rim. I also I.D. the Triple trees to be DEW MFG, which I will strip back to chrome likely this afternoon.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Got a lot done this weekend! Both Case covers are back to Raw Alum. Almost all of the red paint is off of the rear wheel and the chrome is decent underneath. The Top end gaskets are ordered, along with the stock mid mount footpegs, an actual key and a new push button starter. Managed to take a bent XL shifter and graft it to the original half on the "Jockey Shift" Almost done, but there are some process pictures of that too

Here a few more shitty pictures..

Still need to strip the black off the rocker covers, but I'll probably wait until I tear down the topend. That is the height I am going to tab the tank at, and the coil relocation will be nice.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Hey guys, here are some more shitty pictures of what happened last night. Cut down the beater 72 fender I had and mocked up the Tombstone taillight. I think I will end up running it as a solo seat with a modified Bates style P pad, but the rear bucket from the lepera will be too long for the proportions of the frame. The rear rim is stripped, mid pegs mounted, some more paint removed, the triple tree was stripped, but the chrome was half sanded to the copper layer.

A little back yard fab. Better than what was on it and it cost $0

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Well, none of my shit came in on Saturday so I didn't get as much done as I wanted to. I did get a spacer made for the Rear brake lever, I bent an offset in the brake rod to tuck it in a little, wired in the Ignition and the Push button start and was able to get it cranking.

The moron I got it from completely fucked the points and condenser. None of the screws were correct, one of the stand offs was stripped in the case cover, the timing advance had a sheered off roll pin and will need to be replaced as well. All and all, the case cover was already crack and previously rewelded twice, so I ordered another, Dynatek S comes in today, etc etc

The bike does crank over though, compression seems strong.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Got the Dyna ignition in last night after some fucking around with stripped and mismatched bolts. The replacement XLH covers I bought were actually worse than what was on it and one of the gear carriers was cracked at the oil passage, so there's $50 wasted. At least the screws came out of the one on it. Replacing the sheered roll pin in the timing advance was also a bitch and I think one of the Advance springs needs to be replaced. Should be good to start once I get it timed.

Found cut offs from the Sissy I put on my Dyna, Should help get the trident to the right height once I'm done with them.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Some minor updates, been busy cleaning up the shop before the snow flies and trying to hustle some parts to get through the holidays.

I did replace the switch housing clutch perch with the K Model style which is a huge improvement

I got a little lifted and decided to bust out the sewing kit. It's not perfect, but the entire front seam had pulled out twice and looked like hell. This will pass

Trying to get the timing done before Thanksgiving so I can do burnouts in front of my grandma

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Got the Upper motormount/push button start/ key/coil/ choke mount in last night. Should be a great upgrade to the doorbell and the fog light switch. I also have this Old Paint tank that needs the rear tabs rewelded so I may frisco this one and save the "good" one.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

So I finally got a decent laptop so I can actually do internet shit without it crashing. A little hit to the wallet, but now I'm waiting on parts and fabbing the old freebies so it'll work out.

Also extended the $5 tweaker swingarm trident bar. still need to mount it and cut the height. Flux core did the trick with the off set weld.

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

Going through some of my olds man's photos, I found these of his '68 Trophy Sport and his '76 FXE. Too good not to share. The Triumph pics are from '72 and I think the FXE pic is from '77 or 8

Re: 1975 XLCH Sportster Hartail Chopper Turn Around The Junk Draw Special

So here's a shitty picture of the bike, and a first mock up of the "Mufflers"

I finally wrapped my head around the timing of the Dyna ignition and holy shit, it kicked over and idles pretty good on shit gas and starter fluid. I will change the gas tomorrow and let the battery charge, but this is a huge milestone for me.

The TC Brothers hard tail kit is in the mail too, I only want to re-do the top drop outs for now, just to get ahead on the fender/sissy/etc.

Cheers

I never thought I would say this about an old sporty, but I like it! Nice job cleaning it up.
