Did I buy junk?
« on: Apr 02, 2018, 04:24:26 »
I recently bought these used hard welded and reground cams for a kz750 sight unseen. When they showed up the bearing surfaces and cam lobes were covered  in a waxy grease. After removing this I am dismayed to find there is substantial rust and pitting on the bearing surfaces and the base of the cam lobe. Are these trash?

I'd return those if possible.

Yeah, return.  I wouldn't run them.

Pitiful, just pitiful, what some will do to others for a quick buck.

Geeesh. Send them back with a very sternly worded note.

Sorry to confirm what others have said more politely, but those parts are junk.  That is some serous pitting, so I am not sure why anyone would have ground them.  Possible that the grinder did it to show the owner that they were junk.

If they were the last pair in the world, I'd get them media blasted and metal sprayed and ground to spec, but I'd hazard a guess that there are better cores out there.

crap. that's what i figured. They are a Megacycle cam with a pretty radical .465" lift. I talked to them and they said they could repair it for $400 but for that much money I would prefer to pay a little more and get a milder grind.

Yeah, IIRC, they quoted me 450 for a new set if I provided a set of cores.

I think Megacycle just pull numbers out of their asses?
Prices seem all over the place and have for several years.
Personally I feel they are just severely overpriced as cam grinder is same as automotive one ( swapping templates around doesn't seem that difficult from what I've seen) Specialising in motorcycle cams will be a bit more expensive than knocking out a few hundred small block Chevy cams but not the amount they want.

seems way over priced. Do you have any recommendations on other companies? Or may be I should just keep calling until they give me a good price. lol.
