Hello cafe racers fans, experts and all in between.
I recently bought a cb650 custom 82 imported from Holland, as it was previouse project, and got left for standing (lil worried about the reason)
It has quite a few aftermarket parts, as you can see thats what I got.

So the bike runs, but is covered in rust, and other time changes that it made to the bike.

Photos made by the seller.
I love the exhaust, steering wheel is ok, it had clip on mirrors on bar ends, double pods, throttle cables, braking lines changed, new spark plug connections, new chain, koni suspension, new front susp seals (one is leaking), some gaskets changed (leaking oil from top right one)
Im a beginner builder, lady from Lithuania.(srry for grammatic) .
Ive been riding motorcycles for 5 years, last one was honda cbr600 f4.
Im ok with bikes, and I like to read, so did some research on building bikes, im a fast learner, although, i think i will make mistakes :D If you want to share good advice, or state your opinion do that. I will be pleased :)
I will try to post, just to figure out how this thing works and continue later :)

So it quite has an investment in parts, but still the reason remains a bit scary thing im worried.
It has 71k km on the clock.

First thing I did the following day I brought it home tank removal, and general closer inspection.
Found some interesting bits like more changed parts.
I still hope the selling reason was just a lack of interest. I found that some things made in really beginner way.

Noticed worn and damaged bushing parts on koni shocks. Ok more rust...

Disconected wires. Hm.
But the bike started (only couple of cylinders though)
It had a cracking noise. I feel bad about starting.the bike in this condition. The seller said „sure it starts” (the seller is only sales man, has nothing to do with the bike)

Sorry, I've forgotten to mention nice tires

Funny sealed carbs.looks like someone some time ago cleaned those

New throttle wires, noticed that front cable, is quite loose on the carbs. Doesent givea.full throtle angle while pulling the handle. Should it do the full turn opening the carbs max?

So first contact ended up like that :)

Meanwhile, poured some vinegar acid in the tank, after degreasing it.
(Still keeping vinegar there)

346ded01099844e3610ddbab60aadaee.jpg

The inner tank filter showed some hardcore rust sand, and was pretty hard to pull it out.
Also I found hard to empty the tank first time. Some large rust peaces are shaking inside of the tank, i cam hear it, but its so hard to empty it. Almost imposible?

22c844f0d63c7331d9a09cd0f35a0732.jpg

Managed to remove the pods and carbs.
Cleaned them, had some nasty stuff in the bottom, and a lot of dissolved black silicone/sealant stuff. The float jet has a worn rubber end. And number 24' i was surprised, that floats couldn't be adjusted as there are only plastic floats alone. So i have an idea that carb is pretty simplish type.
Wonder how it will be compatible with pods and exhaust.
The exhaust, spark plugs are like new. So it seems more and more to me that the bike was not ridden.
Still biggest question remains, why? Why it is someones unfinished project...

Drain the oil and check for metal bits and crap that should not be there . The crackling noise was it from the exhaust or the engine. It was the exhaust my guess it was just running bad. It it was from your engine it could be any number of things.

Thanks, will do, including oil filter change :) anything else maybe? Dont want to miss smth.
That was definitely, the sound of not all cylinders working properly.

Did some shopping today.
Planing to renovate the leaking forks. I hope it will be possible to do at hone with no big worries.
And after long and frustrating tank _ apple vinegar acid mix. The tank was neutralised with baking soda, rinsed a couple of times with gas, and sprayed with wd40 oil to prevent following rust progress. Wanted to start the bike, but petrol tank on off thingy got loose and managed to dismount the screw. Fixed. But will try to start tomorrow. Hopefully.
It looks quite better now

Today did some cleaning, and frame spot painting — spraying.
Reassembled the pods

Im worried about these pods and carbs.
Should the main jet get drilled? Or can I do anything else?and what kind of symptoms the bike will give if its wrong mixture of too much air and not enough gas?
Never had custom sport air filters installed on any of the bikes before.

And forgot to mention rear shock bushings changed with homemade universal stuff. I hope it will do their function. Looks tight.

Took it for the short ride. Riding showed no problem in engine work, idle sometimes is jumpy, and throttle cable just too long, doesn't pull back fast enough, you can hear it in the video. Engine started warm no problem on half press.
Old leaked oil on the top of the engine burned pretty good. Couldn't see any fresh leakage yet, as I had suspicion about couple of gaskets sealing ability. Maybe it will show overnight.
This sound made my day :)
https://youtu.be/cczoufwxmCI

So next stop is front fork. Already bought the oil sealants. Hopefully, will manage to do this at home :)
And front brakes, than rear.
Brakes are not working properly.
If you have any advice about the sound let me know.
I wish for a louder sound thou. Strange exhaust function. I hopped more from it. Maybe anyone have any ideas how-to make it sound better? Stripping the mufer?

have you checked the valve clearance that is clattering way more then the 3 of mine ever do

its noisier than most of my cx500s

Idle sounds pretty high, too. Double check timing and carb sync and make sure you don't have any air leaks between the carbs and boots, and between boots and head.

Thank you.
Valve synch not done yet.
Will focus on that at the moment.
It was hard to get the idle. Definitely carbs need synch.
Appreciate the help :)

Nice bike man.

Might also be good to check the 'T' rubbers between carb 1-2 and 3-4.
Mine were cracked and therefore not running ideal.

It's called the 'Threeway joint' on CMSNL:
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb650c-1981-b-usa_model7226/partslist/E++19.html#results

Number 10 and 11

The rubbers connects the first carb with the second, and the third with the fourth. You need to unscrew the carbs from each other so you can replace them.

Mine were completely cracked :

Ok got it now.
Ohh, so I could have missed those.
Thank you so much!

Also, I wanted to ask you what kind of rear fender you have chosen? I want both, good looking not too big, and practical to really do its function type of fender

Hey, it`s been awhile since the last post. So. I got the front wheel off, brake calipers disassembled, fork drained and cleaned. Left one was leaking, and the suspension was super soft. That's inside

After:

Meanwhile while waiting for the paint to dry and get nice and hard:

Some cleaning.

Front wheel, happens to be bent. Given to the shop to straighten. Found a little impact on the outside of the rim. As it showed more „8” shape front wheel.
Really happy to find it and fix it. Turns out there are more serious problems not about the impact.
46422b18dd7230ce25e4490c54eab85f.jpg

And after one week front got assembled.
Fork oil w15 inside. Hoping for the firmer front. Some rubber fork sleeves and final result of the front suspenssion

Head light opened. Changing the bulbs, and some bolts were missing.
So now waiting for the front wheel, cleaning the front, will finish the front break this weekend.

To remind, i want to register the bike and pass inspection, and then do the tail, seat, indicators and so on.

The front forks look nice! Did you just use spray cans of primer and paint? I was planning to do mine with VHT caliper paint.

Hey, I used epoxy primer, before that I used 800-400 sandpaper.
And paint , 3layers.
I decided to give an extra strength and used clear lacquer spray, two layers
