1974 CB550 Build

Havent posted in a whike so I apologize for that. I have had to alter some things that I wanted to do but I am loving how this is turning out. Here are some pictures of my progress.

Got the front forks on. I got the entire front end off a 2007 gsxr 750. I have to resort to a cheap rear suspension alternative for the time being, but it will do. Welded in tabs on the tank and on the frame for the cb500 twin tank. Tank and fender are not painted yet as that is probably the last thing I will do. Exhaust options are still in the air but I think I will go with a shorty cone option and wrap all the pipes. Electrical is my next task right now as I am creating my own wiring harness with the help of some diagrams I have found.

Fabbed up a ignition key bracket and am now just waiting on my new rectifier / regulator combo to come in from 4into1.com. Only original piece of my ignition system that is staying is the starter solenoid.

Front fender before clear coat. Still have some more sanding to do on the tank. I wasn't happy with what was showing under the primer.

WOW!!

This is going to be a Bike Of The Month someday.

Why did you paint already? Are you completely done with all of the fabrication on the entire bike? Just wondering what your methods are. I'd be afraid to scratch it with so much left to do. Personally it's a curse for me to paint anything until I am sure the fab is done everywhere, because invariably I will change things until the bitter end. Others are better at making a plan and sticking to it.

Honestly, I jump around a tiny bit to keep myself motivated some times. Especially when I was doing all the polishing. maybe I'm just slow because I never did it before but It took me a good 50 hours to polish the hubs and rims to my satisfaction. As far as fabrication, only items I have left to "create" are the rear set brackets, headlight bracket, and exhaust. All those items are separate from the frame so theres no worry on scratching anything. Only thing I am scratching my head on is if I am going to put something to protect the carbs from the rear tire flinging crap into the V stacks as this bike will be a rider and not a trailer queen. I can always tack on a couple brackets to hold something on the frame. Not sure yet, any ideas?

Got the throttle linkage hooked up on the CR29's. I was able to utilize the stock 07 gsxr cables. They are actually the perfect length. Only mods I had to do was to drill out the cable holders on the new carbs to 21/64th in order for the cables to fit inside. If you haven't seen it run yet I have a video that I posted on this thread not too long ago.

Got the RPM gauge up and fitted into the stock gsxr upper triple. I cut the key hole out and also one of the mounts but utilized the rear key mount to hold the gauge. Got the gauge from DCC. I know the engine can rev an extra 1000-2000 RPM but I didn't see any other gauges that I liked. This gauge will mark past 8k but it is just not labeled. I am going to call this unlabeled zone of fun the "love zone".

Fixing the petcock valve for the tank. Normally I would just get a new piece if it is cracked like this but this valve right here cost me a trip to urgent care when I was drilling out a stripped bolt and the body of the valve fell apart and the drill bit went through my finger. Needless to say, but I am not letting it win. Soldered the void. Works great now. I now also have a vice ;)

Got the headlight mounted and couldn't resist but to temporarily put on the tank and fender even though the paint is still soft :) not sure how I feel about the blacked out Honda badges though. Also have to do something about that plastic brake reservoir.
