cb350 only runs with the advance rotated 180 degrees?

hi.
i just picked up a 71 cb350 and it runs pretty well up until around 5k rpm, then bogs.
i assumed it was jetting or timing. (it does have pods and those common motors/dime city mufflers)
watched a video on the auto advance unit behind the points and went in to check it out.
i dont know the terminology, but if you spread the advance weights/springs on the base plate (?), you can remove the barrel(?). so a video i watched said that some people put the barrel back on 180 degrees off because they are unaware of the notches/marks in each that need to be lined up. (the notches/marks on mine are located on opposite sides, one facing into the engine, the other facing out).

so the marks were not lined up, i got excited, lined them up. wont start. doesnt even sound like its trying to fire. only runs with the marks at 180 degrees.

any thoughts?

(tried to search but only came up with the right and wrong way to do it, not the situation in which the wrong way sort of works and the right way doesnt)

thanks!
