Build: Softail Bobber

roddenby51

No matter where ya' go, there ya' are...
I'm calling this build a Bobber because it is mostly stock in appearance, semi-rat rattle-can paint, hot-rod sleeper. Brake upgrade to match performance, and suspension upgrade... want the over-all look to be an old guy riding an old school softail.

Frame delivered by Big (UPS) Brown:

KraftTech K15051: 1989 to 1999 softail style frame... 1-1/4" down-tubes, 30 degree rake, 0 stretch.

On the work cart: Test fitting swingarm.

Two days after paint:

S&S V111 Evo & Baker DD 5-speed... planned to let the paint cure for a week or so before installing engine, couldn't wait.

Making progress, though it's hard to see:

Starter installed, lathe time required to establish proper clearance on the pinion gear. Sourced heim-joint for shift linkage, used a button head stainless bolt for clearance between shift and front cylinder. Sizing a stainless button head to mount speedo sensor to transmission... all the little things that go into fitting the puzzle together.

More of the little things:

Removed OEM chrome oil tank, replaced with Kraft Tech oil tank... soon to be Satin Black. Mounted jiffy-stand and mounted regulator to front of frame.

Kraft Tech top engine mount. Marine grade tinned wire ordered for wiring harness... will 5 colors be enough?

Triple-tree, swingarm, tanks:

A few wires starting to appear... oil-filter mount installed.

Pulling string across backside of sprockets to verify/check alignment:

Rear wheel centered in frame, Jupiter aligns with Mars, (sprockets aligned) rear brake doesn't drag...

Satin Black fender, solo spring saddle, Progressive Series 422 Adjustable Shocks installed:

Rear wheel final fitting, spacers machined to length. 16" OEM HD "Conestoga" 9-spoke wheel, 11.5" OEM HD brake rotor, GMA rear 4-piston brake.

Almost a roller:

Final machining of front spacers, axle required a little lathe time. Next, mount rear tire... move project to shop.
