Title: Sportster Cafe Build
Post by: DBrevit on Oct 11, 2017, 00:27:30
Hi All,
New to this forum, started my Sportster build about 2 1/2 months ago. Picked up the 2002 Sportster about 3 months ago, has just over 2,000 miles on it.

Looking nice!  Good to see a bike with proper fenders.  Is the seat base notched for the tail light?  Can't tell from the pics - looks good though.

The method you used to mount the seat base and create the rear hoop is genius, well done man. This is one of my favorite cafe builds and by far the best Harley cafe I've seen.

Thanks for the pics!  Awesome solution.  Nice job.

Very clean bike to start with.

Post by: brad black on Oct 23, 2017, 08:14:40
almost makes it look like a normal bike.

why the 19" rear wheel?
Title: Re: Sportster Cafe Build
Post by: brad black on Oct 25, 2017, 02:52:44
i would have expected an 18 - better range of tyres, etc.  that's all.

Looking good man. You didn't do any cutting on the frame, correct?

Post by: CrabsAndCylinders on Oct 30, 2017, 17:14:45
Your bike looks great.  I think it has a early/mid 60's Cafe look to it, very classy, like a Triton, solid and powerful looking.

Dude that is silk purse from a sowís ear!
Very well done.

The equal wheel size is great, there is a feature posted of a CB450 with crazy large (21 I think) wheels front and back, they look very odd and Iím sure donít handle in that bike, your 19ís look spot on with the size of the HD motor.

You gonna find a matching strut and make a pseudo-hardtail?

Well, the wood struts had a certain "I don't give two shits what you think" appeal, but I guess the shocks will work too!   :P

I have to admit, I have never taken HD that seriously, the couple I rode while I lived in Chicago were 100% style over function and I didnít like the style either.
Your build(s) is/are really opening my eyes back up!

Do you have a pic sat on holding the new bars showing your riding position?

That makes sense.  Beautiful work by the way.

What year was your Rocket 3?  Mine was a 72 and after I rebuilt it and ported it and so on it was way faster than it ought to have been.

What is that drop-loop frame from? I have been looking for a frame like that for a boardtracker project for quite a long time.

I work at a Harley-Davidson dealer, I see numerous Sportsters every week, and I must say these two Sportsters you've built are magnificent. The Springer Sportster is simply the most beautiful Sportster I've ever seen. Well done indeed, good sir!

When you go to build that Boardtrack Racer, I definitely will be keeping a close eye on it! I'm always looking for engine resources for them. Very nice.

I love it man. It reminds me of an old 45'' Harley or a pre-war knuck.. Did you ever consider getting those knucklehead clone rockerbox covers for the evo engine? might give it a nice bit of detail.. but the way it sits man I am digging it for sure. The bars and front end are perfect.

DBrevit, would it be silly to ask for a sample of how they.....sound? Iím a sucker for the simple sound of a build. No matter what kind of bike it is, American, German or Japanese I simply love it!

Btw, they look awesome! Love, love, love bike  #1 in the thread. Again, they both turned out great. Thanks for the progress pictures along the way.

YES.

Do you build commissions for customers or is this all for yourself DB?  Just curious, since you do such exemplary work!

Great choice in direction. Reminds me of the Enfield-based Indians from the 50s. I saw this one at Mid-Ohio a few years back that looked amazing:
