Title: Ace 50 Slowverland trip. QLD > SA
Post by: eraser on Nov 25, 2017, 02:34:37
So I just initiated a crazy plan. To buy a ace 50 from up in the Sunshine Coast, QLD Australia and ride it back to Adelaide, South Australia over 9 days (~2200kms).

Spare me from telling me I'm insane, i know this :P I'm flying up to get on the bike on Friday.

I have got a lot of back roads and other roads marked up to keep off the highways. With a town at most every 150 kms.

What I have got (or am getting) so far;

Foods
Water
Throttle lock
Motor Oil 1L (will check daily)
Bivy and air mattress (just in case)
Tiny stove and cup (just in case)
First aid kit (small)
Panadol, Voltarin, toiletries
Leather man
Gopro, Mobile, charger and power bank

Now what tools or parts  (other stuff i have ignored) do i need at a minimum? (trying to keep weight down), keeping in mind i do have roadside assist for super unlikely things.

Thanks all,

Crazy Eraser.

The 'Ace' might not be fast, but fuel range is good(ish)!

Keep safe and keep us posted.

Good luck,
Crazy

Sounds like a nice ride. Lucky bugger!
Over that mileage you should give it an oil change. If it's second hand, I'd do one after pickup and another after 1000kms.

I'd also pack a few good metric ring spanners for the chain adjustment 8,10,12 plus axel nut (sorry can't remember size).

And of course don't forget to pack a BIG Smile!!

I dunno how you'll carry all that stuff plus your massive balls 😁😁 What an adventure ! I'd suggest you also carry a pre-gapped spark plug and plug spanner. Also give some thought to finding a way to carry as much stuff on the bike rather than just in a backpack. Your back will thank me 😁 Good luck !

Thanks guys ;) should be good ill video the trip.. and the getting ready :P and compile it later.

The Mariner, I was looking at your saddlebags from the dog saddle bags sweet, unfortunately i cant get these sent over in time. But Can you tell me what the width of the span is? (width of fuel tank) I did see these https://www.velogear.com.au/bicycle-accessories/panniers-bags/rear-pannier-bags/26l-pannier-bags-oxford.html , but I'm not sure is 140mm wide is wide enough, but im sure i could get them expressed out to me monday.

Great plan.

If it is new, be sure to get the dealer to:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1USvziYIyzfyxfZA1YYpQf9eP4djb0GLWbvWcmME88Gk/edit#gid=230050893

Add a tyre gauge and perhaps a puncture repair kit.
Consider a slim magnetic tank bag. Some of them are double layered and carry heaps.

Morning routine....
Check head light, indicators, brake lights
Oil level
No foreign bodies in tyres
Tyre pressures
Lube the chain every 300-500kms

When you change the oil at the half way mark, consider doing the valve clearances.

Cheers
Richard

Howdy,

The ACE tank is about 200 wide at the front, tapering down to about 160 wide at the rear.

Tell you what... I'm in Adelaide too so if you'd like I'd be happy to lend you my saddlebag & you can either replace it with a new one (if you'd like to keep it) or just return it clean when you make it home.

If you want, PM me your details & we'll go from there. :)

The fuel reserve is set quite high .  You will turn to reserve at nearly half a tank , so no need to panic . I also have a saddle bag and some spares that you are welcome  to borrow . Location glengowrie .

An idea for small toolkits , remove the universal and shorten the handle  .

Thanks for teh advice all,

Kit at the moment.

I will get some tyre repair goo, oil, chain lube up in QLD on pickup.

I do have a whoile lot of camping stuff but its comign in at around 4kg (light but bulky).. so i might just drop that out and rely on motels and cabins :P.

Had the pleasure of meeting Eraser today & handing over the saddlebags. They don't hold heaps but every little bit will help.

I also suggested adding some upper cylinder lubricant into the fuel tank to help keep those little valves happy, so here's a  link to a very interesting discussion on using TC-W3 grade 2-stroke oil  (http://www.ls1.com/forums/f48/been-testing-oil-91206/)for just that purpose. I've been using it in my cars & bikes for the last 12 months & have not noticed any problems.

Mix ratio for us metric folks is 1.5ml of oil per litre of petrol.

Good luck on your adventure...

I always carry a set of cheapo bicycle lights (the front one clamps on the handlebar and the rear clips on anything back there).

May not be legal but is certainly better than nothing if you have to be out late in the arse end of nowhere and a bulb goes, also means you have a torch anyway for those dropped key moments.

Have fun.

Richard.

Interesting article. I'll give it a go. Ask wife (nurse) to bring home a syringe for me that holds to 20ml. I normally fill after I hit reserve, which is 6ltrs. So I'll add 12ml when I get home. A great little can of worms, that one.

All, thanks ;) leaving this friday, should be on it by 1pm and to the first destination 180kms away by 6:00pm hopefully.
I dropped all the camping equipment, and have a lifestraw incase i run out of potable water (doubtful) and a tiny metho stove I made from an old V can (pic attached) ;). Got a Bluetooth headset so i can listen to music or directions or cry to loved ones :P.

Mariner, Thanks I modded my tool roll (read: cut it in half with scissors) and it fits in one pocket of the saddlebag, so 2kg there. and then other pocket now has the first aid kit, poncho, hand warmers another kg or so there. Smart phone charger will fit in outside pockets and the lock on the other one, so a fair amount of stuff in it. :) I will also see if i can grab some cheap 2 stoke TC-W3 on my journeys, already need to grab some oil and chain lube and some tire goo maybe.

Orrible: thanks I am trying to to bring anything extra, but if i feel it after the first/second day I will go and grab one.

Anyone using a ram mount for their phone/GPS etc? If so where did you secure it?

You will probably find that the new 'Ace' will get very hot after running for a few hours, especially at this time of the year.

Don't panic if it doesn't want to start after a fuel stop; give it time to cool down. It is probably a good idea to kick-start only as you are less likely to run the battery flat. If it's not going to start in a couple of kicks it's trying to tell you something.

If you're coming through the centre of Sydney I can probably assist with an oil-change and tappet adjustment etc. (will PM phone number).

Best of luck,
Crazy

Forgot to say earlier-Tea. Take tea bags and a flask and make tea every morning. No reason other than it is tea, and tea and bikes go together so well.
Much better than that silly beardy coffee nonsense. Tea is the answer. Always has been and always will be.

So looks like i might be getting a bit wet during my trip, which isn't what i was expecting, but then again can we trust the BOM? Fingers crossed this wont cause additional issues, and will only be a sprinkle, as i kinda got summer kit not rain kit.

Stroker: thanks Mate, At the moment i'm planning inland a bit more, Tamworth > Dubbo > Parkes, But always good to have a contact in case of an issue :)

Spotty: No i plan to be asleep as soon as the sun sets ;)

Sneikz: thanks for the picture, i got a Ram mount just hope that it will mount with no issues.

I wrote a longer post the other day but I think the forum got reset and lost it.
Day One;
Was just a load of delays, the plane was delayed because of storm by 2 hours, my pickup was 1 hour late, and then 35 minutes into riding up in the hinterland the front tube went. Lol so I was on the CB trying to get someone to lend me their compressor, no dice a person at home finally helped, I rode down and got about 6kms to a tyre shop in Landsborough about 10 minutes before they close. They didn't have a tube to fit, they called ahead to another shop about 5 km up the road, I remember then saying" better get going fast they close in 5 minutes" and I'm like "55kph is all I got" lol anyway they thankfully waited for me and fixed it on the spot. By this time we're close to 5pm. I kept on riding Google maps kept sending me down bicycle only tracks which was annoying.
I stopped after one of these bike tracks, frustrated, put it in neutral, hand off clutch, apparently not in nutral in 1st lol fell over,  I laughed people laughed lol. Anyway so I kept on going it's real dark now, headlight on, being overtaken every 2 minutes.. at about 20 KMS out from the northern Brisbane burbs the headlight globe went, so I rode 30 minutes in the bike lane manually flashing hazards when a car came.. I made it to a red dog service station, but no spare globes, so I still had about another 90kms to go but I realised no chance so pulled into a motel for the night.

The bike is running fine, a few small things, jumping into gear is a bit brutal, 1st to nutral when warm is dicky, 2nd to nutral is fine, and when in nutral or first she revs like crazy, but riding is fine (jetting, side effect of derestriction?)

I will write day 2 later today.

Good luck. Many years ago I nursed a tired xt600 1/2 way across OZ. I was helped by a lot by the people I met on the way. An adventure I will never forget. Try not to stress out and enjoy. You have many great, good, bad and ugly moments ahead of you. For me they were great times (OK flats are never fun), just make the most of good bits and take care

So day 2, Going across Brisbane North lakes to hopefully glen Innes  realistically barely outside Brisbane at Wooloomam.

Got up and went to super cheap, they told be to go to Bunnings for the globe lol, went back to the bike and started the trip, the day started out as standard Sunday drivers in stop Start traffic, I had told Google to avoid the highways but it decided the M5 was perfect for me ( I wish I could have used it gotten across Brissy in 30 mins). I stopped at the onramp big sign no mopeds. Told Google to find another way, it took me down a dead end road and onto a bike path along side the M5. I stayed on this to the next exit because I couldn't find an easy way around, I got quite a few abuses thrown at me from the Sunday bike riders, gave them sorry waves. Finally got to a repco again no globe, walked out of repco rain, still 27c  but raining. Looked for a bike shop and found one in Ipswich. Headed up into the hills on the old Highway up hill 25kph down 60kph repeat for an hour. Constantly moving into the bike lane to get people off my ass. At about 1 I got to the bike store in Ipswich and finally got a globe + spare. Fitted, kept driving south pulled over at a pub for some lunch. TBH I remember saying my bag is still too heavy to myself. During lunch I got a phone call, my accommodation cancelled on me for that night due to rains, road closures. Luckily day ones accommodation that I couldn't get to on day one offered to let me stay on day two. I pulled in at about 3pm no more than 80 KMS out south of Ipswich. Beautiful Queenslander parked the bike underneath. Big storms in the horizon, bad mobile signal but enough to re plan around the next days travels, BOM looked bad. Off Highway road getting closed. At about 1am it was pouring. Day three I'll write up soon, doesn't go to plan but that's the adventure. I had a play with the fuel mix screw I could get it to idle nice but then a pita to start. But still runs once it starts.

Day 3, turn around.

I got off fairly early, realised I'm way behind where I need to be, I took a few extra days of work because of the rain but I needed to get close to 300 this day. As I started to head south, big black storm clouds were racing towards me with the haze of rain under them. I got about 60 km in and the rain hit, at first it's fine, but slowly the road became a river, at one point the water was 10-15cm deep and as cars went past I would literally float off the road ( unfortunately no pictures as I was in a huff, wet, tired, and realising I'm not getting to Adelaide). I finally stopped and turned around and headed back to Brisbane. I grabbed an Airbnb in Wooloowin for the next 4 days. Took the test of the day to get back to Brisbane, I wanted to take the A4 but again reached it and no mopeds. So back through the hills of Brisbane luckily the rain had stopped by now. Funnily enough I didn't have gloves on and I got major sunburn lol. Stopped for Breakfast/lunch colleges crossing and just realised this is all part of the adventure, and to just enjoy myself.

Day 4 I had a play with the Carby, and couldn't understand why the high idle kept going, also this day it literally rained the whole day, didn't stop until about 7 when I went to get a cheese burger lol. Oh also I think today was the day I realised my manual kickstart lever had fallen off lol. I also did maths and realised even if I drove 8 hours a day I can't make it back to ADL, so I put a transport request out on truckit.com.au. and booked a ticket back to Adelaide for the night of day 7.

Unrelated I'll try those various other mapping solutions.

Day 5
So after spending Day 4 indoors hiding from the rain and playing with the Carby, i wanted to go for a ride. I also wanted to do an oil change. After much buggering around i decided I would take the 50 to someone who knows the 50's. Firstly I called into a place called scooterroo, they do 50cc scooters, but apparently don't work on bikes. I knew there was a place just outside Brisbane that sold the 50 model so I rode about 50kms to Cleveland QLD, and stopped in at the Cafe racer shop (https://www.caferacershop.com.au/).

Explained some of the issues i was seeing, such as high idle, like flatchat for no reason, and if i changed the fuel screw it would be a PITA to start. Chain tighten, oil change etc. I was going to do the oil change myself but the Super Cheap Auto stores dont have oil return bins out front, so wasnt sure how to dispose of the oil correctly.

Anyway he had a look over, he explained to me with the Chinese carby they are fairly soft (same with the chain), and what happens is if someone else who doesn't know this adjusts the fuel screw, it can gouge internally, which is where the high idle comes from, the needle gets caught then trying to idle. Also another strange issue was the accelerator cable is meant to have a stopper on the end in the carby, my cable doesn't, which meant i could accelerate clockwise and anticlockwise, Also a cable tie was pulled tight on the accelerator cable, restricting the return.

I also asked about a replacement brake lever, kick starter and 70cc upgrade, first two can be gotten and upgrade, no body has any.

So coming out it runs better, less vibrations, but also a bit less power :P (translates to about 5kph slower in top gear {could be all in my mind tho}).

Then I planned to ride the bike over to Stradbroke island, but it was about 2PM and the last ferry back was 5PM, So I rode around looked at the touristy things (like dead canetoads and ocean) and headed back to Brisbane. I think the trip back was the first time i saw some real asses on the road, but they were a minority.

I also think I got my first bid to ship the bike back to Adelaide this day, And had chicken buffalo wings for dinner ;)

Day 6 - Have a holliday.

I rode over to Stradbroke island and just spent the day at the beach. Sat on the beach looking for jobs and houses (and the females). Arranged for a transport company (FFS transport) to move the bike from QLD to SA for $551 on day 7. Bike is running real well now, getting more confident on it, although going down hill on it at like 70kph still makes me stress lol due to crappyish brakes.

That night I was riding to dinner, and ran out of fuel. Luckily enough for me there was a petrol station up the road. I tried the reserve tank but no dice. Filled her with 8.6ltrs or something and finally got it running again. I will take a closer look at that reserve later.

Day 7 Bike pickup and fly back to Adelaide.

So I had to checkout of where I was staying. Again with my fully loaded backpack I think it was obvious I had brought too much camera equipment with me. Next long ride I will really bring the bare essentials.

My flight was at 18:10 so i had some time, and i hadn't heard from the freight people yet so I went to have a look around Brisbane CBD then finally ended up at the touristy Mount Coot-tha area. At about 12:00 I called the freight guy he said he would meet me at 13:00 at a petrol station. Nice guy, runs freight from Toowoomba, secured the bike correctly and it will be on a truck on Monday.

It was bloody hot, and I walked to the train station and started the journey home from here.

Thanks to all the guys who helped and gave input, all very wise tips and help. Dont worry this wont be the end of slowverland, I have a few semi crazy plans like a flinders run, or a coorong run, hopefully this time with some video and actually successfully get to the destination (although this was an adventure to say the least).

The bike arrived in Adelaide yesterday, A bit worse for wear, but nothing major. The glass mirror has fallen out from the mirror, So went to kmart and grabbed a ladies makeup mirror that is just the right size and some liquid nailed fixed that, (I'm replacing them anyway in the future). Indicator is a bit bent, oh and the Tacho was rooted, took that appart found a few capacitors floating around inside, new one ordered. A few spokes were loose (which might be some vibrations i had noticed) so i tightened them (to the best of my ability {e.g rotated tightened skipped 4 tightened, but no idea how tight is tight}).

And have some new ones on their way from china ~40 bux, with a new brake lever (with included reservoir) ~12bux, and something to replace the rubber tank strap, but wait for a picture of that if it works out ;).

My next pain in the butt is the Tab on the chain guard decided to just snap off from the frame sad panda, not sure I'm confident enough to stick weld to Chinese steel.

orrible :P, Thanks for the Tig offer, at the moment i just removed the chain guard, will fix in time.

Yeah i have been riding it arround the northern burbs the past week or two, nothing amazing yet. I got the RPM guage today, and the replacement brake lever (will fit it today at lunch{back at work}). With the RPM guage i will look if there is a way to insulate it from teh vibratiosn because thats what killed the last one.

Also looking at a mikuni VM16 carb for it but not decided yet.

So I got my Chinese "genuine" leather belt that looks like a crocodile :P to replace the cracking tank rubber belt. I just used a big rivet to fold the belt over on the ends, in the long run i might need to drill them out and put some eyelets or something but we will see.

I also got my chinese $11 brake reservoir and lever, I just removed the old Skyteam lever and replaced it with this one, it lines up with the brake button and is 98% the same as the original.

I also changed the bikes oil, I think the cafe racer shop put too much oil into the bike when they did a service, there was easy 1Ltr++ in there and was a bit vibration-y at top speed.

now just waiting on the mirrors, But even with a skeleton staff at work people come from miles away to ask questions about it :P

I tried to build a new seal for the gas tank from some old rubber conveyor belt I had lying arround, It was super tight and thought it would work a treat, instead it was a dismal failure leaking more than if i didnt hava a cap on the tank lol. All good ordered the correct honda part from partzilla, now we wait.

Had the same problem and purchased the Honda OEM seal, however, while it reduces the leaking at the seal it will not stop the fluid  coming up through the locking mechanism.

The secret is not to fill over the internal lip which is about 10mm down inside the tank.

Otherwise replace with a Honda cap.

Sneikz: i have a new Honda cap and an additional seal coming just in case :P Ships tomorrow from partzilla wherever their based.

My mirrors arrived, They are really nice quality, like REALLY nice. Putting them on was easy enough, the mirrors have some aluminum part that is meant to expand when you do them up to hold them in the bars, but  it looked like they assembled them backwards, so the metal couldn't expand. fixed that.

I also had an issue on the test ride that the the weights were vibrating around in the handlebars. So i used a hot glue stick and some superglue to pull them out, (i tried a magnet but it wasnt strong enough), I then liquid nailed the weight in at their correct position.

Nice job. A world of tinkering and little mods.

How do you find the Ram mount? Do you use the rubber retainer?

I have a Chinese knockoff which has a usb charging port incorporated in it. I've placed a black Velcro dot on the back of my phone with the hook dot on the mount centre.

Ram mount is gold, the 50cc has a hell of a lot of vibration at high speed (thats 55-> 65kph) and the phone hasn't budged to date. When i first started using it i used the retainer, but i haven't found any reason to lately. It is well built tho as in when i use it it clears the camera lens on my phone so i can record if i wanted to. If I was going on a real rough road I would but yeah as i said it hasn't moved. I saw those knockoffs but someone vouched for the rammount. I will be buying the other ball mount tho the one that threads into the original mirror hole, I'm just not sure of the thread size and pitch at the moment.

I was thinking about getting a usb charger, but I wasn't sure how much power (Amps) a 50cc bike can put out, and didn't want it to cause me issues on the initial long ride. Might look into it later.

So i grabbed the 17620-402-010 Honda fuel cap several people talk about workign on here.

It required some grinding of the tabs underneath the  cap, as I am unsure if this is a Skyteam thing, or a Friday built bike, but the fuel tank tabs are bigger on one side than the other.

It feels like it fits well, and looks damn good, but putting the bike on an angle it appears to leak as much as the Chinese cap and seal. Sad panda, oh well i will continue to wait for the Honda Gasket 17632-176-771 and hope that fixes it somehow..

Took the bike out today for a 200 km run, In am hoping to go see the Tesla big battery in South Australia, I knew it would be slow and I chose to take dirt roads, it has been pretty sketchy, especially when the road went from gravel to deep sand lol, and I have rear camera footage of that insanity lol.

I just grabbed a lithium battery and installed into the little bike. http://www.batteriesdirect.com.au/shop/product/24187/lfp7l-b.html
Fit well in the standard location and it is nice and strong start (At least for a 50)
