So this is the build.
I thought long and hard about which category it would best fit when completed, and Id say that Tracker is appropriate.

So this is where im at.

1974 DT250 or DT2.

The plans are simple.(in Theory)

Strip down to basics, re wire new loom, so pretty much build from scratch.
Blast and paint frame.
Polish wheels and side covers.
Rebuild engine, without splitting the case, so new piston, rings, wrist pin etc. Going .5 oversize.
New clutch disks and springs.
Hand build exhaust.
New bar and switches, front light, rear light and indicators.
New foot pegs etc.

So ive started stripping the bike down

So ive pulled the head off and both side covers.
The head and cylilinder are cleaned up and ready to take to the Head Shed to be bored and cleaned further. The will paint it for me, in HP Black.

From memory, when I stopped riding this bike, around 4-6 years ago, it had a knock, which I thought was a bottom end bearing. But theres no play in the rod, so it seems that the knock is further in.
ANNND i think ive found it.
Not good.

Now, i dont belive its supposed to knock like that, Nor should it have that much movement, I will note however, that the clutch disks were seized together, inturn, the springs wernt pressing on them, as there wasnt any resistance. I was hoping that when I put new disks in, and new springs, that it would press against it and tighten it up.

I pulled the clutch basket however and found this.

So its badly worn. I figured this might be the problem, but then I checked the movement again and found around 3-5mm of play.

I dont know if it supposed to have play or not, the engine hasnt been opened in 15-18 years, so its not as if someone has lost a spacer etc.

So, now im looking for a NON worn clutch basket.
If you know of any, PM me or replay back here, as Id love to get my sweet little hands on one.

Thats about it for now, tomorrow, ill be tackling the other side, cleaning up the points and magneto.

Thanks

Stuart

Anyone else ever seen an egg shaped sprocket??

And welded the stand mount back on.

So ill do the triples tomorrow and start cutting off stuff that wont be going back on.
Ie. Bash plate, 2 stroke oil reservoir etc, then its off to the blasters.
Or the hydro blasters, which gives a really nice finish.
But it all depends on cost.

I recently just finished up a Dt250 build of my own... great bikes to ride, super fun!

definitely tuned in to see your progress

Thanks man, looks like a blast.
Rusted tank looks rad.

I'd be interested in seeing more pics of it if you have em.

Thanks for the follow !

Very cool! I always loved that year. Mostly due to the script on the exhaust.
Your bike is not a dt 2 however. 1972 was the year for that.
Although I think both bikes are dt1 based bottom end, with a reed valve intake.
I just traded my 1973 DT3 for a tt500.
Papakapook(?) on here just bought a cool little dt1 from me though.
Good luck on the build!

BTW, in order to run, all you need is that black wire coming from the engine, straight to the coil, and you should be good.

Yamahaenduro.com has alot of good info.

cheers!

Thanks for that man!

I didn't quite understand the DT1-2 thing, so thanks for clearing that up.

And the black wire trick is very helpful, and I'll be using that when the time comes!

Not too much to update.
The flywheel puller came yesterday so I got that 1 second job done.

It's been a busy week at work, so I've been pretty stuffed all week.
I will have some updates next week though.
Stay tuned!

Ok so a big day in shed.

Firstly.
The DT250 motor.
Super hard to get parts for.
Especially the bits I need.
I need shims for the gears.

I've got my manual, and it tells me that I need shims, then gears, then cir clips, but it doesn't tell me what size shims I need, nor the thickness etc.
So I can't tell if I need to replace some, or if I've even got the right shim in he right place.

Also, getting another motor as a donor is hard too.

So.
I've opted for another motor.
I picked up a CB250 74' model.
And I plan on shoe horning it into the DT frame.
I like the DT frame, it's low, long, narrow, and has a really good rake.

I spent the day taking off tabs and the old motor mounts.
A little bit of welding and reinforcing the rear shock mounts.
I'm thinking of going a solid mount, so the tops of the shocks need to be pretty heavy duty.

The new motor is a bit of a gamble.
I don't know if it runs.
But it sounds ok, definitely no clicks or clunks which is good.

I will have to modify the frame a little bit to accommodate the larger engine.

For instance, the front of the frame on the DT is a double, because the OG motor only has one exhaust, where as the CB has 2, so I'll have to gusset the frame so they fit.

Getting excited about the next couple of days.

I'll be making up some mounts, and images to take down to my local CNC machine guy.

I also need to know if there is anything else I need to consider when aligning the motor?

I'm pretty sure it's just the sprockets.

Anyway.

Stay tuned.
