DT100 Hipster Build (mantra: nobody is doing it)

Honda make Josh, happy Josh
Just picked up a 1981 Yamaha DT100 for this year's winter project and for $100 it was a pretty good find. With my height of 6' and weight of 255 lbs this one will get sold in the spring in front of a whole foods or possibly in the summer at an organic farmers market after the drum circle. During its sojourn on this earth it has shed the pesky pieces that made it street legal, which means I do not have to take them off, but I will be making this a street legal, street only two smoker. I am thinking of doing more of a minimalist brat style build although a Mini Cafe Style build might be fun (lets face it this thing will never Do The Ton), it has pegs for a second rider so I will probably keep the seat long.

First things first I will be getting it functional, and do the typical basics, clean carbs, change fluids, straighten what is bent, clean and lube everything, replace worn parts that I plan on keeping. When I bought it I asked if it had spark and the guy kicked it over and it fired up, but just idles.

and then the Electrical...

BIG ELECTRICAL QUESTION... and I am sure there are some links to threads on this but..

Is it worth converting to a 12 volt system?

I am a big fan of updating to a 12 volt system whenever possible, and I work for a Honda/Kawi/Yama/Polaris dealer so finding the 12 volt version of bulbs is not to difficult for me.

I have a headlight that runs an h4 bulb that I could do in 6 volt, but if I want to do anything that is LED I will need it, it gives me a lot more options that are easily attainable, head lights can be difficult in 6 volt.

Mainly it is a wiring work to make things easier when you do stuff like adding a phone mount and charging dock so that you can use the gps on your smart phone while you ride. I have only done it on vintage cars though so this will be my first time on a bike

lolz ;D if you gotta have a gps and a smartfone to ride a lil 100 you are doing it wrong
that said it likely has 2 seperate coils down below so you could proly just get the lighting coil rewound

hipsters will want live wood accents from sustainable harvested local groves (just saying)

It does have two coils, does it need to be rewound or would just switching to a 12 volt regulator do the trick?, I guess it depends on how much more wattage I need so I will have to do some math

Oh totally, I am thinking of doing a rear cowl and trim pieces in leather and wood, antique led indicators, with a storage spot for a beardo under the seat

If this is going to be a hipster build it better say 'HONDA'.

Its true, because no one is doing it... I want it to have that old school look but still be able to charge your I-phone

Thanks this might be just what I am looking for, I've also been talking with Rick's to see what they might be able to do for me

Hey, Love the bike! I am wondering how two stroke is going to be received by your target audience, tho? Shouldn't it be a hybrid electric at least, if not a plugin electric? I am just imagining the raised eyebrows (or what ever a hipster raises) when the smoke starts to come out of the exhaust. I still think it is cool and wish you the best with it. I wish I knew where I could get one for $100. I would love to putt around on one (I am 5'9"160).

There is a local news station that offers a classified service for free, it has kinda taken over for craigslist and freecycle in the area. I have been know to search for bike stuff that is under $200.

I will be styling it though in the style of hipster, I am thinking of throwing a 110 pit bike inverted fork system on the front though

Was able to get some work done on the DT this week. I read a few threads on cleaning carbs and ended up boiling them in lemon juice. It did a great job and even freed up the slide. Ordered a new needle and seat and a pilot jet today

I put it up on a table to work on, it is nice having a bike small enough that I can just lift it up and down myself.

I got the diagram for the rear and figured out what pieces were missing on the rear wheel assembly, just a collar and a chain tension assembly, got them ordered today along with my carb parts, a new petcock packing, and a spark plug cap.

I pulled the reeds, they looked surprisingly great so I cleaned the little varnish off that was on the guides, took a look at the piston for a few strokes, and slapped it back together. With some luck I will have a runner in a couple weeks

Thanks, my last project imploded and got sold as a parts bike so I am excited to see this one actually come together

Got some goodies in today, just waiting on a pilot jet and a throttle cable and I should have a runner again.

Does anyone have the factory carb setting info for this bike?

No, but it shouldn't be that hard to set. Fuel level will be in the vicinity of 2-4mm below the bowl gasket and the idle mixture screw will be somewhere around 2 - 3 turns out (you set that to where the idle is the best). And for the needle start with it in the middle and go up or down dependiing on how it revs out.

I take it you're replacing the jets with stock sizes? If so the mixture screw, fuel level and needle are all you need to adjust.
