SR 250 Tracker / Brat

Hi All

I joined the forum as I have the opportunity to buy a SR 250 with only 52 km on the clock.

The problem is that it has been standing in a leaking shipping container so it is corroded to say the least.

I'm wanting to build something very similar to the Auto Fabrica Type 3 - probably unoriginal but I love that style.

This means that I'll be throwing away most of the standard stuff and converting to kickstart.

So the frame, engine, forks and wheels need to be salvageable for it to be reasonable (Am I right?).

I can get it for very cheap - about R 3 000 (less than 200 GBP). SR's in South Africa are hellish expensive relative to this - you'll find an older runner for over R 15 000.

I'm not massively technically experienced but am happy to strip the bike and send parts out sandblasting, powdercoating etc. Happy to replace the lights, pegs, rear shocks, seat, bars etc etc and get Yamaha to rebuild the motor.

Below my planned look / build.

Wow and I thought mine looked rough. You got your work cut out for you bud.

I am also busy with a Yamaha SR 250 build. Unsure of what im going to do Café/Tracker/Bobber or Chopper. The original plan before I even bought the bike was to do a Chopper with ape hangers, lowered back end, with a full custom paint job but since ive been researching, there are just so many ways to go to make this bike truelly spectacular.

So good luck man, I hope you can get all that corrosion sorted. If you haven't bought it yet, id suggest getting a donar bike in a little better shape as a lot of the parts can be used and by the looks of the pics, most of that bikes parts are not worth trying to salvage.

talk about a rustic look.

Only thing I would be comfortable using from that bike is the seat pan (which is plastic!) and the fenders if I was after the petina look.
I would not spend more than a case of beer to get those parts.
But the autofabrica stuff is fenderless and they replace the seat.

I like their type 4 the best.

Think safety first.

Motor is junked unless it looks flawless after sandblasting.
If the frame is solid then that might be the win (if cheap enough)
Footpegs and some of the non structural bits may be re used.
Suspension was junk anyways even when new so you gain nothing buying the rotted parts.
Triples are unsafe from that picture.

good luck though

And the obligatory "get it, it will buff right out" for you!

Wow the type 4 is really awesome.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your input.

I'm walking away - this thing will either give me Tetanus or kill any spark of mechanical interest I am developing!

Looking for an old TW200 instead...

Hi Pigp3n,
That's a beautiful shot of a 2-stroke Yamaha. I'm building a Yamaha DT360 brat and really inspired by that bike. Where did you find that picture?

Thanks!

Good call. Start with something cleaner and running. You might have to pay more upfront but in the long run you'll spend much less and won't have to work on everything.

PM sent. its an autofabrica sr250 creation as well.

Wow that is a sorry looking Sr, was the shipping container underwater at some point?

Good idea to back away, sadly for that bike there is not much that can be done.
