DT250 Tracker

Mr Bernzo

Been Around the Block
Time for a new project.
I brought this DT250 a few months ago and have had it in the shed while I finished my GT185 cafe racer.
Looks like it is a 1974 DT250A. Picked it up for $650 which is probably a too much for what I ended up with. Anyhow, its pretty complete, the engine turns over & has spark.

I want to turn this into a tracker, as per the reference image. A bare bones bike with nothing on it that it doesn't need. Will be road registered and I plan to ride it regularly.

The current plan-
Must handle well, stop well and be fun to ride
Must look the part
Front end swap with disc brake and better forks
19" wheels
Change from 6v to 12v
Tracker seat
Powder coat frame
Polish and paint

Found some time on the weekend to add a fuel filter, reassemble the carb, adjust points and kick it over. No good, the spark is not consistent. Will need to delve further into the electrical. So I decided to pull the top end off.
Ugly. Will need a rebore and piston. Good news is the bottom end is clean and appears to be in good shape.
Time to order parts while the bore gets done!

I have been following your build. Good to see someone else building a similar beast. I will be watching with interest.

Found a little time to work on this beast. It came with a spare engine that I had not looked at.
It's very worse for wear. I unbolted the top end and found a good bore and new looking piston. Score! The big end bearing feels loose so this will just be a parts engine.
The cylinder is has some damaged cooling fins but will be good enough to get this thing running and on the road.
3 of the 4 cylinder nuts have 1/4 drive sockets firmly attached.....

The gaskets for this model seem to be a little hard to come by locally here is Aus.
I had to order genuine top end gaskets from Yamaha. Will pick them up on the weekend and see if I can get this engine to fire.

Well the 2nd top end didn't work out as the intake manifold did not fit. Back to plan a. Got a bore and new piston. Then set about assembly.

4 kicks later and the garage was filled with blue smoke! Such a classy aroma.

The 250 got a dt200 front end. Used dt250 tapered bearing kit and no other mods required to fit to the frame. Forks are 100mm longer than standard so will need to shorten the stroke length a little.
Waiting on a front wheel to be delivered. Then bleed the brakes and test ride.

Ooo can't wait for this! Will you make up a low slung chamber?
Probably won't make a chamber, I am not that skilled at fabrication. Will use the standard chamber to get it all up and running then look to get a circle f.
Right now I am waiting for spokes and 19" rim for the front. Will post updates when I have these.

Fair enough. Rad.

I remember it was one of my big ambitions when I had my DT400 to make a chamber. I even bought some software to calculate the cones. But unlike you, I overestimated my fabrication skills and thought I could make one. Knowing what I know now, I was fecking dreaming! haha I still couldn't make a good one either. Best to outsource to a pro or yeah, get a circle f.

The 19" front will look real, nice!

I had a go at making my own exhaust for my DT400.

Patterned it out, cut the steel and rolled it.

That's awesome, I have followed your build. I don't have the tools or skills for that.

It's the small things that are making me happy right now. New seal for the fuel switch.
My new front rim and spokes should be ready next week too.
Found the right wiring loom to fit too!

Following with interest. I have a 73 Suzuki TS250 that I want to street track.
I will be keen to see that. With a name like hooligan, I am sure you will build a bike that is a lot of fun.
This project will take me a while, but I am looking forward to a 2 stroke street bike that can carve through traffic and blast away from the lights in a haze of smoke, pull up on the front wheel and take off on the back wheel.

I am stunned with the build but the exhaust is not well designed , even when you certainly have the skillz to pull that off. Kudos!!

Yer singin' my song, brother!

New 19" rim, spokes, bearings and bead blasted hub. Some paint on the hub then time to build a front wheel.
