had a crazy idea

Now I like traditional but I don't mind something a little different. And while drinking with the neighbors and working on my brothers jeep one of the other guys comes up in his Toyota sr5 and has his newly installed projector foglights on... The gleam across the reflective material on the street signs and the idea hit me. Reflective stripes, hell reflective tail tank. Now ive done a bit of research and it turns out 3M makes the reflective material used in traffic signs. I wonder if there is any way to get that type of reflectivity on a tank or frame.
How slick would that be? Have a silver frame during the day then a glowing frame at night (when a drivers lights hit you, unless you have onboard accent lighting, then it would just enhance the accent lights)

I have made some previous posts about the best way to go about being noticed, as I live in a very heavily populated area with terrible drivers, and being seen/heard is paramount.

yes they put that tape on truck trailers and whatnot
i gurgled it for you dot tape

https://www.google.com/search?q=reflective+dot+tape&rlz=1C1FLDB_enUS525US525&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=3BQcU678JovBoASLx4Fw&ved=0CH0QsAQ&biw=1024&bih=533

Thanks, I have found plenty of tape, what I'm looking for is sheets to cut and make a "wrap" for the tank (like they do for graphic wraps on vehicles) in white and brown 3M Diamond4000 and then I would either attempt to paint over it(on a test piece) to see how adding a stripe or some kind of graphic/Honda logo or use the brown 3M diamond4000 for the stripe/badges

Your best bet is to call Enrico over at ModernImage San Diego. Good buddy of mine and knows all things 3M and vehicle application.

i don't think they can get that type of reflective properties in a thin film that will wrap like you want
next door to my shop is a top secret defense contractor that works on cloaking and i pull some interesting shit out of their dumpster
one lot was some samples and peices of highly reflective plastic sheats with different patterns KINDA like you see on DOT stickers it was either gold or silver and super reflective and focusing like many tiny mirrors, some diamond patterns some straight but this stuff was all layerd, 3d like, it had to be for the effect
keep looking though

Sounds to me that what you are looking for is reflective paint. Use "reflective paint" as a Google search, and you will turn up lots of sources, like this:

One of the brands of reflective paint is Sphere-brite. The catch with reflective paints is that they use beads to produce the reflections, so you get a textured surface. There is reflective vinyl, but for a motorcycle frame you're cutting it down to strips like the sticker rolls anyway. If you're wrapping tins, then a vinyl wrap makes sense. IMO, if you're going that route then a good reflective gel coat is just as good and more durable.

I'd go for paint, wrapping a frame in vinyl sounds like a bunch of wrinkles n bubbles. N just strips would look half ass IMO.

I wonder if they will still reflect well if you bury the beads in clear urethane. Might be worth a try. I'd like to try candy base coat silver, followed by reflective clear, followed by urethane clear, sanded smooth. Might be awesome!

That sounds amazing.

I had some vinyl graphics on my old bike that we black in regular light and would reflect white when shined with bright light. Here is a link to some stripes, but most vinyl shops should be able to cut out a design.

Shit! Now you have me wanting to experiment with all sorts of colors covered with glass bead!

Didn't several motorcycle companies (Yamaha) use this type of paint/tape back in the 70's? I think on my CB900F the stripes were iridescent. Plus I think I've read articles that say this isn't a very bright idea being impaired drivers sight fixate on it. How many times have we seen Stop signs plowed over? I mean really, the stop signs around here are on 2" rails and somehow drunks knock them down.

House of Kolor has a line of paints that soak up sunlight and then glow for a few hours after dark. They are called Kosmic Long Glo. I have been wanting to do a bike with it. 8)
