Nauti 88

Wide Open Throttle!!!
Hey guys,

I have been reading threads on here for quite a while and I have plans to start a 2 stroke cafe build later this year with this,

But I am trying to finish my current project before summer. My brother and I bought a 1988 Ski Nautique recently and are in the process of rebuilding it. The engine is strong, interior is in great shape but the stringers were totally rotted out. We have pulled the primary and secondary stringers out pf one side, cut new ones and are currently glassing them in.

Once we get the starboard side done, we'll take out the port side and do it again. After we are done, this boat will be stronger than when it left the factory. It will be awesome to be able to take the family out on the boat this summer.

The boat has been moving along nicely. The last picture from my previous post was the starboard side stringers with 1 layer of glass on them. We have put 4 more layers of glass since then. Since this is a direct drive boat, the engine bolts right to the stringers with an aluminum mount in between. These stringers have to be super stiff to be able to hold up to the torque from the engine. The stringers we pulled out had about 1/4" worth of glass on them, so 5 layers of 1.5oz mat should be enough to do the trick. :) Since the starboard side is mostly complete, we tore out the port side stringers and ground down paint on the existing fiberglass so we can start replacing them as well. Currently the port side strigers and lateral support pieces are cut and they should be glued and glassed into the hull by tomorrow. The first time my brother said he wanted this thing up and running by May, I was a little skeptical, but we are learning fast!!! I think it may be doable. We are still planning on building a back seat, and doing some little custom touches before the build is done, but we should be on the water by May!!!! I attached photos, but it's too late to try to figure out how to embed them. I'll try to do that later. For now, enjoy :)

I don't envy that job, but I like your choice in ski boats. I've got an 89. Awesome things they are.

I love the boat. Having grown up skiing behind a Larsen Laser with a pretty deep v hull, switching to an actual ski boat was amazing!!!! This is what it looked like under the floor when we started tearing things apart, but I've been surprised with how far we've come already.

Just a small update today. We got the stringers for the port side cut and glued into the hull. Even without the glass on the port side, the boat is a rock!! Ran out of fiberglass mat, so I'm going to have to make a supply run in the next few days. Anyway, here are the latest pictures. Let me know what you think!!!

Cool project!! 8)

I rebuilt the family runabout a few years back. I had a pro do the "heavy lifting" and was left with just the interior to do myself. :D

I'll try to find some pics. :)

Steady On!! 8)

Your boat is beautiful!!! I hope I can get mine to shine like that, but I'd be happy just to get her on the water. :) I can't wait to take the first ski run behind it. I even know a guy that lives on a private lake with a ski run. Once we know that it won't become a permenant anchor, I'll go out there and see if I can still finish a course!!

Nice work mate, having done a boat rebuild myself all I would say is do everything you want to do to it now, because once you put her on the water you'll never get around to doing anything else :D looking forward toseeingyour onthe water pic's.

Thanks for the advice. We plan on doing custom gunnels, rear seat, and stereo install. Hopefully our May deadline is doable. :)

Thanks for the info. My brother is actually doing a build thread over there too. The guys over there are just like everyone here. Very supportive and always willing to share their knowledge and insight.

So its been slow progress on the boat. We are getting close to being done with the port side stringers but nothing else has been going on lately. The primary stringers just need a cap layer and the secondary needs another layer all over. After that we can get going on fixing the gelcoat on the bottom of the boat. The hull is so much more rigid since the new stringers went in. Crazy how much of a difference some solid stringers make. LOL.

Hopefully we can focus and get this thing done. There is still alot to do and not much time to do it.

Oh shit yea! Love these old tourney boats. I have an '83 MC Stars and Stripes. Cant wait to get her back on the water.

Small update tonight. It doesn't look like much but the stringers are done!!! We finished putting the cap layer on the port side primary and secondary stringers tonight. Next comes the bulkhead, battery box fab and install, and then we flip it over to fix the damage on the bottom. The goal was to be done by May 1st. I don't think that's going tothe happen but it should be complete some time next month. As long as she's done before family vacation, i'll be happy...

So more progress...got the floor mocked up and the bulkhead in. Now that the floor is cut, we are going to 'glass it on both sides, then glue and screw it down. We are actually starting to make good progress.

Another small update today. Got the tower, wind shield, and gauge pods off. We got all the pieces of the floor cut and put in place. Finally, we cut in a spot for the battery box. Slowly but surely this thing is coming together...

Yea. I'm putting in a kickplate. To protect the wiring, vents, etc that are pictured. They are far enough forward that the driver shouldn't kick them, but better safe than sorry right?
