Title: Cl350 Scrambler:Thigh fryer
Post by: freerideordie on Jan 15, 2018, 13:37:03
Been a long time since I posted on here, pretty much just gave up since photobucket essentially deleted any photos I had.  Anyway, I have too many projects but have gotten back to being responsible and posting some progress.  Picked up a pretty clean and running 72 cl350 from a buddy of mine and here is how it goes. Less talk more photos.

So, the shop is pretty full.  Just a few projects at the moment. 87 BMW k100rs Im building for friend. Cb650 bobber. cb550. cl350. grom. 72 bronco on rotisserie.

Sometimes it hurts to chop a frame, this is not one of those times.  The stamped steel looks awful and had to go.

bike up on the lift.

I just finished this table/lift and am loving if.  Used a HF 8ton air/hydraulic jack, 2x2 tubing and a 3/16" steel top.  I added several features like a folding ramp and wheel clamp.  But maybe my favorite is that I found I can shove some aluminum angle under the top, and hang parts bins.

see whats i mean, sh*tty stamped garbage boner

marking where I want to attach rear frame with 1/4"

Finally!  I always think Im gonna use these things and I never do, worked pretty well

Glue that sucker on.

Repeat.  I will tie these in further later on, to clean up the soon to be tank mounting area.

rear hoop all welded up, since the shock mounts were stamped steel wrapped around tube, I had to slug and rosette weld some tube to tie back into. You can see under ther hoop, I welded up a jig that bolts to the rear shock mounts on the swingarm, this way I could keep everything centered while I weld.  Of course will check on the frame jig later once evertything is further broken down, also gotta make some new shock mounts

Got the subframe almost all welded up

Ive removed the stock tank-mounting points  in the rear and will weld a back on to the tank to not only clean up the look, but will provide a mounting point for the seat pan, similar to dirt bikes.

I need to finish up the seat pan, and make the seat.  I'm working on some seat designs, hopefully will be able to market some later, so ive been doing some testing, making plugs and molds to fill with 2 part flexible urethane foam .  Have made some progress already and will update some more later.

I'm in.  Could you tell us about the seat foam and where you got it?

Seat looks awesome.  It wouldn't happen to be the stuff from Smooth-On, would it?  I've been meaning to try that stuff out.

^ it is the the smooth-on VII FR flex foam.  It's a little bit finnicky, wouldn't really be worth the work unless you were planning to make quite a few.  But the rebound/density is perfect, like a sea-doo or MX seat.

Rear shock mounts done. I'm raising the back end of the bike for a little more of an aggressive riding style.  Can't call it a scrambler if she can't scramble, so working on some frame/swingarm braces that should knock out some flex.  Haven't decided on extending the swinger or not, but I  will definitely be adding some strength (actually probably just weld up a new one)

Mate this is looking most splendid indeed.  Kudos, very, very impressive fabrication skills and a great looking ride-to-be.

Thanks Jimbo, time is fleeting and there is so much to get done.   Probably going to be slowing down on the scrambler here soon....gotta get started on the Beemer and the gs650... considering both bikes now have deposits put down on em. I wanted to get the braces/mounts finished up b4 take her off the lift, just to make sure nothing moves outta whack. better get to work.

Looking good, I like the method for making the seat.

I'll be building a rotisserie within the next couple of months for the Karmann Ghia I'm restoring. Build that one yourself?

Sure did, I can rustle up some drawings if you want, I based it off some plans I found here,  http://classicbroncos.com/rotisserie.shtml , and modified it to be more adjustable, as I want to use it for other vehicles in the future, namely the '81 911sc my father left to me a few years back. So it should work for you as well.

That would be brilliant. I'll have to modify it a bit to fit the Ghia body but not a biggie. Thanks!

..and now back to our regularly schedule program  8)

Yep.  Unfortunately, common on 350's and 360's.

stick a sohc 750 front end on it, thats the best way to fix that chronic top tree breakage thing
