77 GS550 project

Go with the high mount clip-ons, you have your Triumph sitting there for longer trips, hey this is a cafe bike! BTW I'm north of you on the age thing. Cool looking bike looking good.

What is a good chain for this bike? X ring, O ring? The rear sprocket is a 530. Where to buy?

A D.I.D. X ring in 520, I use Sprocket Specialists. I would convert to 520 it's quite a bit lighter and new sprockets would be good with a new chain.

Nice looking project..... How did you get the motor so shiny ?

I used a wire wheel, steel wool and a 40-year-old Sears hand grinder/polisher on the removable bits and painted what I couldn't polish. I had no intention of giving it a super polish as the rest of the bike won't be that 'polished' anyway.

Looking for options to replace this muffler. Header outlet diameter is 2.5".

How about this photoshop mockup stainless shorty from Dime City:

Good work mate - very cool project, seen it's been a while since any updates - any progress?

Should be installing the rebuilt carbs next week. Too busy with life and riding the STR this summer!

It's been a while since I updated and now that cooler weather in the pacific northwest has kept me off the Scrambler I'll get a little more done on the project.

Is this going to be loud?

Got her running!

My first street bike back in 81 was a 77 GS550 in black with the gold and blue pinstripes. Brings back great memories.

I had done a quick superbike version with it way back when. Yosh pipe, superbike bars, cut down seat, raask rearsets...just can't leave well enough alone.

Wonder where that bike is now.

Yours looks VERY cool! Enjoy it!

A couple of photos of electrics. Working on mounting a little Shorai Lithium Iron battery as soon as the budget allows.

I'm looking to replace the rotted out front master cylinder with something new. Can anyone point to one that would work with this GS?

making a little progress

Electrics are nearly finished. Installed new handlebar switches and got the wiring sorted out. I ordered an integrated tail light/turn signal and should install that next week. Need to rebuild master cylinder, finalize bars, figure out why the clutch won't disengage fully and decide on paint color.

Thanks for the vid! I love those shorty mufflers too but was afaid it would be too loud... im sold now though! thanks again for sharing!

I haven't updated for a while so thought I'd toss in a photo of electrics under the seat.

I bolted a sheet metal tray under the frame from the rear of the gas tank all the way to the rear of the bike and attached necessary electrical components to that. New Shorai battery will fit in the rear.

Loving the look of the bike; just got a 79 GS550 myself, so will be following yours closely to see if anything you do will be useful for my build!

Good luck with it all!
