Title: The Travelling Gremlen Bell! In Kentucky getting Rusty.
Post by: Garage Rat on Apr 10, 2010, 17:38:01
I have seen the Traveling pants movie with my SO (don't judge me) and I got an idea today. What if we did something like that? Off the bat I thought clothes were out completely, I aint wearing anything any of you jokers have worn and I figure whoever got whatever it is after Go! it would "get lost in the mail". Then I thought how about a bike part? Naaa our machines are so different from each other and that's not such a good idea. Then I thought about tools... Wrenches are out, some of ride metric and others don't... then I got it... A HAMMER!

Everyone can use a hammer for any job. Ive used one of mine to hold my fork lowers for painting, Ive used them for prying stuff and above all else hitting things. One of the most useful tools out there.

So, what if I bought a ball pean hammer, used it for a week or two, took a picture of it being used, sign and date a log book for it and then sent it to the next user. It could get all around the world and back!

Probably best sent COD to keep shipping costs down and have it work its way from there.

What say ye? Yea or Nea?

I can honestly say that I've never seen that movie.
But then again, when I found out that Clint Eastwood didn't blow up the damn bridge in Madison County, I refused to watch it too.

Well, I can compromise after things like a week of spray painting my snowmobile hood in my basement followed by my house smelling like spray paint for two weeks after... Its a give and take relationship.

The bad news... I'm heading for Toronto tomorrow... I'm going to be gone for a month and wont be able to start the journey until I get back. Anyone else care to start it?

We can also post the tracking numbers for all to see and follow.

rather than a hammer, what about a "gremlin bell". Get one ,use it on your bike, document, send it off, etc. By the time that little bell gets back to u it will have scared off most of the gremlins in the world and Lord knows we could use some help there. In fact, Ive got a spare I could donate to the cause.????BJ

i got a good luck charm thats kind of like a gremlin/dragon face... never did me wrong and would be crazy cheap to ship to each other.

could do a bell exchange with members or something, since you aren't really suppose to buy them for yourself

A bell could work, document how many bike miles/ km it has within time period and send off. easier to mail too.

Ha, that's good too.  But I was just a little late to the game.  I was riffing on the travelling hammer and Nario's cave man tools.  He used a log wrapped in leather instead of a hammer to make knee dents on his tank.  I got a kick out of that and imagined the travelling hammer being something similar.

Just my dorky sense of humor.

BJ, if you want to send it down my way I'll make the first session with it. I'll bring it around the Voodoo capitol and make sure it's got plenty of good Mojo laid on it. I can send it to Saki when my time is up, if he's ready. If not, whoever steps up next.
I'll PM you my info. If I'm jumping in line ahead of somebody, just let me know and disregard the addy.

Count me in on this, fellas - I know I'm far away over the sea but I'd definitely like to be a part of this sometime.

While I'm here...should we make a list of people interested in this thing? Not some Nazi thing thats non-negotiable, but simply a go-to so you know who to send it off to next.

Cheers - boingk

I just read the entire post - cool idea!
When it comes to the West Penn, we could do a little relay with it. I could hand it to VonYinzer, he could hand it to JFish, etc, etc. I would rather ride it out to another Tonner than mail it, know what I mean?

cool idea there BigR.I guess just to make things simple, someone, anyone needs to led Redbird know that they want it next. When he finsihes his tour,he can send it off,log here and say where it went, post any pics, and relay the miles he put on it.Boingk should definately get a turn with it and anyone there u feel comfortable sharing with.Just be sure it gets back Stateside at some point. I said a little prayer for Redbirds safety when I sent it,but u guys do whatever u want to in that regard. ANother tragedy here in Chattanooga this past week-end.Young woman (26) on her bike, some stupid dude comes down the wrong way on a four lane street, another dude tries to avoid Mr.Stupid, swerves, hits the young lady head on.DOA at the trauma center. It just goes on and on.Please ladies and gents,be safe out there.bj

Ok... How about if we send one of those nice Moleskine leather covered journals with the bell. There about 3.5" x 5". Everyone logs their mileage when they got the bell and when they sent it off (and maybe tapes a pic into the book) than signs it. That way their will be an actual logbook. Maybe when it makes its way home we could even get copies made for everyone. Ill buy it and send it to redbird if you guys think its a good idea. Just let me know and Ill stop by the stationary store tomorrow and send it out.

+1 on that idea, It'd take a little work to scan in every page once it's made its rounds and if we wanted to get a book made http://www.blurb.com (http://www.blurb.com) does it at a reasonable price. Girl at work got the smallest book, 7x7 hardcover full color 120 pages for 36 bucks each. Took a week to get it.
Would be a cool coffee table book, with everyone's pictures and notes

Now to get my bike on the road for the gremlin to travel on

I realize this is getting to be a lot of stuff really fast, but I wonder if it would make sense to keep track of the bell's peregrinations (I love that word) on a Google Map.

I've taken the liberty of creating one.  I think it's open to editing by anyone:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=102897768867327436432.000484ea4032a1274ff2f&ll=32.916485,-90.087891&spn=41.06881,79.013672&t=h&z=4

I put in rough locations for the first two riders in Chattanooga and Nawlins.  Feel free to move the markers to somewhere more accurate.

You can also edit the info with each marker.  Seems like it would be cool to add photos, bike details, etc here.  If you go on trips and take photos in front of landmarks, you can add more markers, photos, etc.

Here's a link to directions for using the MyMaps editor.  http://maps.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=68480

It's my first MyMap so let me know if I've screwed something up of if you all can't edit it and maybe I need to change a setting or something.

Dan

I'll try to get it embedded so you don't have to click the link...

So... The bell project may have hit a little snag folks. bj has (as of the last I heard) decided to leave the forum. So... Im not sure if he has been in contact with Redbird and requested the bell back, in fact I have no idea whats going on. Just a heads up though. Hopefully redbird chimes in and gives us a little more insight.

Sorry I hadn't seen this sooner... work has been getting in the way ::)

Von, I sent you a PM. Yea, send me the journal and I'll take care of back logging BJ's info, and adding my own. BJ, if you see this (or maybe Von can pass it along), if you're ever headed down this way, give me a holler. I'll take care of ya while your here ;)

And if nobody minds... my time with the bell is up on May 1st. But I'd like to hang onto it for just a few days longer. The Bikini Bike Wash/Bike Night is on the 4th and I figured that Bikini/Bell pics had a nice ring to it (yea, pun intended) ;D

Dakine, boingk and yourself are the only ones showing interest in taking the bell for the next session. Boingk called it first, but since you have the flashdrive, I'll put it out to both of y'all...

Boingk, if you're OK with it, I can send it to Dakine for the next session, he can include the flashdrive, and then send it to you... OR, I can send you the bell, and Dakine can send you the flashdrive, and the bell can continue from there. Either way is cool with me ;)

Ok guys, here's my Ride Report with the Gremlin Bell...

Here it is attached to Molly (I used a ziptie instead of the string because I was afaid of losing it on the crappy roads around here)

My time with the Bell was marred by bad weather and prior family commitments, so my mileage was kinda low... only 79 miles. But I did get it around to some local Historical locations... and a Hooters! ;D
The first day I was able to ride, we went to City Park. The land, as a public park, dates back to the mid 1800's. But City Park as we know it today was built under the Roosevelt administration during the Great Depression. (a brief synopsis of City Park's history can be found HERE (http://neworleanscitypark.com/history.html)) Originally the land was the site of the Allard Plantation...
Close up of the Historical Marker
(http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/vialfmly/Markers/AllardPlantation1.jpg)

From there we went to vist the Peristyle in City Park. "The Peristyle is a magnificent Neo-Classical structure with majestic Ionic columns and is one of City Park's oldest structures. Built in 1907, the Peristyle was originally designed as a dancing pavilion. Four concrete lions, some of the most recognizable denizens of City Park, guard the Peristyle where stairs lead down to the edge of Bayou Metairie."
Don't tell anyone I got the bike inside... it's a No-no.
One of the previously mentioned Lions.

Also in City Park, this is all that remains of Mona Lisa Ln. A very well known area locally due to the Haunting stories the revolve around it. (the story can be found HERE (http://www.hauntedneworleanstours.com/hauntedroads/monalisadr/))

From there we went to the very outskirts of City Park, to where Bayou St. John connects with Lake Pontchartrain. This is the location of the remains of Fort St. John.

Close up of the Historical Marker.

From here my first day ended as I had to get back and pick my kids up from school.

My second outing with the Bell took us down River Road to see a couple of Plantations.
First up is Destrahan Plantation c.1790
(http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/vialfmly/DS7/001.jpg)
Close up of the Marker.

Next is Ormond Plantation c.1789
(http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/vialfmly/DS7/007.jpg)
Oddly, there's no Historical Marker for Ormond. But it's history can be found HERE (http://www.plantation.com/home.html)
Shot of the grounds between the House and the River.

From there we rode to Lasalle's Landing.
"In 1682, the French Explorer, Robert Cavalier De La Salle, landed in an Indian Village later to be known as the City of Kenner, proclaiming ownership in the name of Louis XIV, King of France. He erected a cypress cross to commemorate the historic event."
Coincidentally, Lasalle's Landing is also the location of the first Heavyweight Prize Fight in the U.S.
"In the predawn hours of May 10, 1870, a crowd of about 1,000 people left the New Orleans Jackson Street Railroad Station for Kennerville. There, in a makeshift ring in the back of William Butler Kenner's old sugar house, about 100 yards from the Mississippi River, Jed Mace of Beestown, Norwich, England beat Tom Allen of Birmingham, England in 10 rounds. The prize for the bare knuckle event was $2,500, winner take all"

From there we headed back towards home and passed through Laffreniere Park. Formerly the site of Laffreniere Plantation.
Close up of the Marker.
That concluded my second outing with the Bell.

On (technically) the last day of my session with the Bell, we had our monthly Vintage Bike Night. Unfortunately the weather scared off everyone... but ME!!
However, I was able to get one last pic with the Bell... with some Hooter Girls ;D

Well, the bell arrived yesterday.  Unfortunately, I wasnt home to accept it so UPS decided not to leave it at the door... wrote them a note to leave it with my neighbor today so we'll see.  Good news is that its bike-healing effects have already been felt by its arrival, without it even being on the bike!  All the little gremlins mucking up my carbs and tank were taken care of yesterday, so she's running stronger than ever now.  Dan's (AlmostVintage_GS) brakes suddenly stopped squeaking yesterday as well, which I'll chalk up to the bell!  Trying to get an itinerary for the next few weeks for where to take this thing...see what we come up with...

I just read the entire post - cool idea!
When it comes to the West Penn, we could do a little relay with it. I could hand it to VonYinzer, he could hand it to JFish, etc, etc. I would rather ride it out to another Tonner than mail it, know what I mean?

Yeah man!!  Ill take the bell for a little ride through a place I like to call... the hood!

Well, it's been an...I'll say - "interesting" - ride with the bell so far.  I'll save the details for the Gremlin notebook, so you'll have to read it to get the story.  However, I have been getting it around as much as possible.  Looking to keep it in Philly for another week or so and then its off to the next recipient.  Here a few shots of its journey thus far:

Placement:

First hundred miles on the bike since the rebuild:

Ride through Fairmount park with a stop at the Civil War Memorial.  Also the site of the first Worlds Fair in the United States.  Here's some info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Exposition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Exposition)
Some amazing monuments and sculptures:

10-4 on landlocked haha. Oh and thought I might just throw it out there, but I'm planning to take a month or so off at the end of the year and try and head around Australia. One thing on the 'to do' list would be all the Big Things, as we've got a whole lot of weird structures. My town is home to the Big Ram - a huge 5 storey high concrete sheep!

Alrighty, well, after hitting the 400 mile mark with the bell, its time to move on!  Its been a wild ride, but you'll have to check out the book and usb to get the goods.  Here's my plan for the next recipient:  I'm going to Troys GTG this weekend and would like to personally hand off the bell to the next person.  Ceremonius Zip-Tie cutting event and the works.  Either decide on here or duke it out in West Virginia in a few days!  Cant wait, see (some of) you guys there!

Hey hey.  The CX650 will be back on the road in around a week with the right front forks, a new timing chain and tensioner and sorted ignition so she'll be 100% legit.  I was hoping to nab the bell for a week or two, snap a few pics then send it onto the next bike off the blocks.

Our resident "let's fix it" man has it up in snowy Pittsburgh (Doug a.k.a. Beatnic)!  She saw Gretta to running and riding condition, and it was only right to make the ride back from Bama to Pittsburgh.  No issues on the road trip home from what I hear.  Hopefully Doug will chime in!

Redbird and Von and I were going to try and document its travels in a book of photos /travel journal and then retire it to a permanent place somewhere.U got plenty o time to join in the fun and festivities. The little bells travels may be a work in progress for a long time.bj

Would it be wise to have it do "small" hops to each destination?  I'm in MN, and I don't know how much boingk is going to want to pay to ship it to me from Aus?  ;)  Or is it cheap to send small things?

What's the latest on the Bell? Is there a thread with Bell pics? A little late to the party, but I dig the concept! I'm in Vegas, and am hoping to do a track day at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park the third weekend in March on my 636, and would love to take the bell for some laps, plus I could use all the good mojo I can get! I could GoPro a session with the Bell in the view. I'm not sure this falls entirely under the premise, but it might be fun to expose the traveling Bell to as many disciplines and experiences as possible.

I can't offer much along the lines of spectacular locales to take the bell to, I live in the middle of two cornfields and down the street from a rock quarry.

However, I *am* going to be going into my first full season of street riding here, this year. So if it's coming through the midwest, you know, southwest Chicago suburbs kind of region, I would love to take the bell for a week.

I promise I will try not to murder it with my lack of road experience. :D

Guys, I now have the bell from Beatnic. I have a pic of it on the GL and it did the 1200 miles with me from Mid Ohio to my house in Woodstck, nb.  Then road to work.  I will hopefully get it around the Maritimes a bit and then send it off to Tim for the BUB.  The bell is safe and sound in Canada and will get some more miles.  Hope to have some pics tonight. My internet was flaky and I couldn't get them uploaded direct from the phone so I will transfer them to PC and try.

Cheers,

Where was that list again....I'm down in MN and ready when it's my turn. It'll get a chance to ride the Aprilia RSVR (for a change of pace ha!), KZ550 and the lady's newest CBR600 cafe'!
What list?  It doesn't seem to be following one.....

There was but it got handed around at GTG's instead of mailing. I would love to actually hand it off after I put some miles on it but I may have to post it as I am like 1000 miles from most members.  If I can sneak a ride down to TO I could hand it off to Tim for BUB, then he could send it to G-Rat for his wedding.

That would be great, especially having it after the boys in TO who started this gang had it.

Ok.  Not had a lot of web time lately but found a few minutes tonight.  The bell has been with me from mid ohio.  It has done over 1500 miles.  Been in OH, PA, CT, MA, NH, ME.  Then into Canada so far in NB.  Took it for a ride today to the town I work in on the longest river east of the Mississipi and took a pic.in front of the worlds longest covered bridge 2280 ft.

I hope to get.some miles on this weekend around the province and some other landmarks etc.

Well, if this hasn't turned to a shit show... Long story short, bikes are out and the internet and anti virus won't work now after I put the card in to see the pictures.

I gotta start work again on Monday and its getting cold fast up here. I'll try to get some kinda miles on it....

Ps, don't get married. Not for the fear of the commitment or divorce, but for all the bull shit that goes on in the process of getting married and the money you save.

Too bad I gotta drive, whisky would be good now.

So my home computer is still down, I haven't found the time to even give it to anyone let alone try to fix it myself.

I did get the bell out for a ride! 20km to work today, and will be 20 home again. The plan is to hit the highway this Saturday and put on around 200km.

If you guys are cool, I would like to hold on to it a few weeks. The riding season is coming to a close real quickly and we are having some freakishly warm weather this year. We are supposed to see +25C this week! If all goes well, I should be able to get a few hundred on it just commuting.

WARNING, Do not use ride with the bell. It will make you ride in conditions no sane man would. If your from Florida, you will ride in a Hurricane, If you live in Kansas, you will chase a tornado.

I just rode 20km to work again at +4C. Sure bigger gloves and a Visor would have been nice but the Bell told me to do it regardless.

On the computer, started it in safe mode did a scan and no virus found, still wont connect to the net... gotta call ISP.

Ha ha, I rode through some wicked thunderstorms and torrential rain with that thing coming home from Mis Ohio, and just as the bike was going to complketely stall out being water logged I pulled in for gas, came out and the sun was shining and I fired up the bike and hit the road again.  The bell will help you through just about anything, except running out of gas, that can still happen.

I was thinking about the USB... with the chance of it carrying a virus around or just plain failing.  How would everyone feel with a group photobucket account we could all just upload to?  Password would just be PMed to the next person getting the bell.

I'll go ahead and put myself on the list after those who have been waiting a while.  I (and probably t71ford) would be down to show it around the mountains of Montana.

Looks like

Garage Rat
Staffy
boingk
Bruno
Griff
Chimera
Ringo

?

I'm sure I missed others, as well as confused the order...

I'm gonna get a few pics this weekend and send it off next week. There is no point in holding it longer with the way weather is turning. Were suposed to get in the negatives next week with snow. If I lived in town, I'd keep riding through the shit but 110km in +5 with rain is not cool on the way to work let alone colder in the dark on the way home.

Who gets it next? I have found a few lists like this. I think it would be cool to make an annual apperance at Barbers then on its way again. Obviousley it needs to make its way overseas again back and forth...

I'll add up my measly few miles and maybe even total all road miles and mail miles.

Sorry I've been preoccupied with other stuff.  Unfortunately there's no way to get the bell from Alberta to Toronto in time for my departure as we leave Wednesday first thing and Monday's a holiday.  So getting it here by Tuesday would be impossible I think.

Ed - if you want to look into it I'm PM'ing you my Toronto address.  Otherwise, it could in theory get to Alabama by the end of the week if it were shipped quickly.  I'll include Kiley's address - let me know what the cost would be to get it there by Thursday or Friday and DO THE TON will cover the shipping if it's not insane.

This is from where I live to work and around town to the marina. It is apparently the largest inland marina in Canada. The lake is over 20km wide and 30 long. It is around 350ft deep.

There isnt much in the area worth seeing. Just the Air Force base and oil industry. Its otherwise all swamp, forrest and farms.

So, quick update on the bell.

Unfortunately getting it to Alabama was going to be obscenely expensive ($70) and anything less expensive wouldn't have made it in time.  Due to the holiday weekend here in Canada even getting it from Alberta to Ontario was impossible in time.

So the bell will miss Barber this time around.

Seeing as the bell is in Canada already, I'm hijacking it for a very short side trip to Toronto if people don't mind :)  I'll take it for a post-Barber spin in Toronto and then send it on its way - is it going to New Zealand next?

So the bell is in-hand in Toronto.  Sadly not much of a riding season left but I'll get it out for a few miles I hope.  My XS is scheduled to go into the window of Town Moto here for the month of November, so the bell will make a photo-op stop there (not going to leave it on the bike for the public to snag) and then it perhaps log a few miles with me on my BMW.  Will be the first time the BMW has been on the road for 3-4 years so I'll need all the bell's magic :)

No - it's safe and sound.

As you know, it carried myself, Troy and Doug safely to the Spring Thaw in May.  I had intended on handing it over to someone at the get together, but somehow it ended up coming back with me.  I'm not sure I even realized.  Just looked in my tank bag and there it was.

So - who wants it?

I laid eyes on it at Vintage Fest this year. The first time I've seen it since my stint with it about 4 1/2 years ago.
I also had a chance to read through the journal too. Very interesting :)

The Bell was passed on to CCrider (Chris). Hopefully he'll be posting up on it's whereabouts soon ;)

Yep, the bell is safe with me.
Unfortunately I didn't think to install it before loading my bike on the trailer at Kiley's, so it's magic couldn't keep my dumb ass from dropping the bike on the trailer and punching a hole in the tank. But It's been keeping me safe since then.

The Bell was passed on to Flugtechnik at the Spring Thaw in Kentucky this spring. Putting any miles on it Flug?

Only about 150 so far. Plan to do another ride tomorrow morning.

BTW I followed your advice and put it on before loading the bike on the trailer. A minute later a tie down popped off and the bike fell over. So I don't think it was the bell's fault.  :)

Maybe the bell kept the damage from being worse. Very slight scratches on the tank and cut the leather on the seat. Nothing major.

Now that would be something! It's high time the old bell went transatlantic :)

Is it just me or the chances of your bike having issues increase as soon as you put the bell on?  Been having some carb tuning issues, must be the colder weather...

Agreed, this bell should go transatlantic.

LOL the bell is supposed to prevent those things.  Just so you know, I had a bell on my GL and still got creamed by a deer so it's no help there either.

Cheers.

Eddie (xulf13) passed the bell off to me at Barber this year. I forgot to take a picture before I left Kileys place but it rode the 350 miles from AL back to NC with me. My speedo and temp gauge quit working on the way but Ill chalk that up to 40 year old equipment and figure the bell kept me from having bigger mechanical failures. I'll try and put some more miles on this thing before the weather turns.

Well good to hear you made it home safe and sound. I don't think that bell is cursed or anything but that is too funny.
Be safe, hope to see you again before too long my friend.

If the bell is with John, then it's near Charlotte and within an hour from Jenn and E.  If John passes it to them, then it will make it to Kentucky.

I do still have the bell. I will be going to the Meltdown at the end of April and I'd be glad to hand it off to E and Jenn for it to make it's way to Kentucky.

Mr.E handed the bell off to me at the first annual #dothetonhitsthedirt meetup in rocky face Georgia, where we rode through some crazy mtn terrain on a few sketchy bikes. Ill try to get some ohio winter road salt on the bell this season, and then hopefully it will be attached to ridesolos cb378 this spring for its maiden voyage.

The bell has made it's way to Augusta, GA via Mid-Ohio and a Dakine duffel bag.  It even managed to will an empty 6 pack of Corona bottles on the side of I-75 in the mountains of Kentucky when Mr E and I ran out of gas on the way south.  We used them to transfer fuel from our bike tanks to his truck...

I'll put these on the flash drive too, but here are a few from the rides on the dr650. Its been to chickamauga Georgia, Chattanooga Tennessee, Birmingham Alabama, North Carolina, rode part of the transatlantic trail and part of the blue ridge parkway and been to the dayton air force museum. I'm guessing about 1500-2000 miles all told.
