Well, It is  "FIGHTER" in my book, and will become less and less "stock" looking as time goes on.
Remember, I have only owned it a month or so...

There are no "FACTORY FIGHTERS".....Don't get me wrong...it's the beginings of one....They need a boost of attitude and performance....A bandit or speed triple are a good nekid bikes but their not  fighters either.....Factory bikes go against the grain of Fighters

Streetfighters are built, not bought from the factory.
These bikes are naked standards built to emulate and cash in on 20+ years of Streetfighter building and styling.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the bikes, but they're not Streetfighters, same as "factory custom" is an oxymoron.
My opinion, Ducati and Buell come closest to the raw edge of the purpose built 'Fighters, understanding what they really are.

At some point, all bikes have to "come from the factory", wether its a Gixxer or a Norton Commando.

I think the Streetfighter, like a Cafe Racer, has certain physical characteristics which originally was created/fabricated in the owners garage.

However that being said, if a manufacturer, (honda/Ducati/Kawasaki, etc..),  builds a bike that has those specific characteristics, does it make that bike any less a Cafe Racer or Street Fighter?

If I build a Cafe Racer from a cb350, then sell it to someone who "didnt build it", does that  bike become any less of a cafe racer because the new owner didnt build it?

To simplify, if yo mama buys blue denim cloth and sews you a pair of pants, does it make those pants any less a pair of "blue-jeans", than if yo mama bought you a set of Levis at Walmart??

In my humble opinion..(which becomes LAW.. ;D..unless ButterflyMETH says otherwise),  whether its made stock from Ducati, or built by TinTin in his basement, its understood that Cafe Racers & Streetfighters have commonly recognized physical characteristics in each of its genre category. It doesnt matter, at the end of the day, who "puts it together", be it  Ducati or TinTin.

If a bike has the generally accepted cosmetic characteristics, (from either of those genre categories),  regardless of whether its OEM or improvised, then it is what it is.

Court is ajourned...

BTW, just as an after thought, knowing ProTeal and his work on the cb750 & cb450,... that Ducati will end up looking and running like nothing anyone's ever seen before...
I demand to  see more pics!!! ;D

I disagree......They maybe blue jeans ...but there not Levis......they may look similar but they ARE different....A fighter IS Built by hand, not a robot on an assembly line...Someone actually tore a bike apart and made it theirs (or paid someone) Fighters and Cafe's are not designed by Commitee or Beancounters...they are built from heart

Don't forget, the most important ingredient in determining 'what' a bike is, is what the bike is used for.

If the bike is used to zip around roadways, going faster than reasonable given the conditions and equipment, and these excursions are punctuated with 100mph moments of bliss and regular infusements of caffeine with a group of chums doing the same, then I say it's a Cafe Racer.  I could care less what it looks like.

If it's being used as a brute force display of raw thundering power, and my 6 year old daughter is scared of it, I'd say it's a Fighter.

If it's being used to lubricate the streetcar tracks through copious amounts of oil expectorant, then it's British ;)

Beauty (and designation) is in the eye of the beholder.

Oh, and if someone asks you 'what year is that' chances are it's a Cafe Racer.  If they ask you 'WHAT IS THAT??!?!?!' then maybe you have a Fighter :D

Thanks for the positive words Bud, they are always appreciated...
The Monster is gonna be a slow project, as it is a brand new bike (so kinda hesitant to go too crazy on it), plus it is hard to work on something when I am always riding it (1600 miles in less then a month so far). The plan is to clean it up alittle, lower it, and do some little things here and their to make it more unique. The real deal is gonna be the CB450 come spring (getting a total overhaul)...

I am gonna do some things to the bike, but nothing major.
Mainly lower it, and clean it up the best I can...

Hey Mossy, where you located??

OK, so I checked your profile...

I recognized the plants and the house, lol, knew you were in NL.

I remember pulling up to your bike on Old Placentia / Ruby line intersection and you pulling off in a wheelie last summer on your speedtripple. Beautiful bike.

What's the plans for the cb in the profile pic?

This is also true.

Well if you're ever lookin for someone to ride around and cause trouble with I'm there (on the Cafe anyway, can't keep up with a speedtripple). Also, I'm in if you need someone to help ya pull yer motor or change your bars, lol.

I'm looking at powdercoating my frame (and triples and swingarm) this winter - so if you know of the best place to go or you have some parts you want to throw in drop me a line.

My cafe inspired fighter.

'93 Honda CBR900RR chassis
Honda 919 motor
39mm FCR carbs
V&H ignition (being replaced w/ dyna 2000)
One off 4-1 GP style pipe using a cut down yoshi can
Fox twin clicker shock
Fiberglass cafe-ish tail w/ home made LED strip taillight
custom subframe (only half done in pics)
custom lights made of driving lights modded to take BMW H7 headlight blubs (HID coming soon)
Paint was done by me, tank graphic is from the "Queen anne's revenge", black beards flag ship.
No signals, or mirrors TINY digital tach/speedo (not in pics)

All the work was done while i was in a wheel chair from binning a different bike, learned alot about welding, glassing and well just about everything. Right now she is coming appart to get a VFR single sided swinger and a CBR1000RR front end. Later in the year she is coming appart for some motor work and a direct port nitro setup, shooting for 200hp on the juice. Im also picking up a pair of CB550s this week for me and my room-mate, its going to be a busy building year.

Court is ajourned...

BTW, just as an after thought, knowing ProTeal and his work on the cb750 & cb450,... that Ducati will end up looking and running like nothing anyone's ever seen before...
I demand to  see more pics!!! ;D

I am new here and don't want to make any more enemies, but that is just a silly definition of a streetfighter.
Streetfighters are build with heart, no matter there size, to be exactly what the builders wants.  ANYTHING that comes from a factory doesn't have a heart it has an MSRP.  Difference?  An MSRP has an easily attainable end and a true streetfighter does not.  A simple thing as blood, sweat, and tears is easily overlooked in today's american society, and much is to be learned from WHERE and WHY a type of vehicle is bourne, not how.  The classics usually come from a fiscal hardship of some sort, and-or a unruly youth society.  Post war US for example with the advent of the hot rod duece coupes and shit.  making something from nothing is the true art of a streetfighter, It can look the part, but if yu didn't build it,then its not yours.

Just got it.  Had a cb550 I was working on, but it had engine issues and got a good deal trading it in for this 1993 Suzuki GSX-r 600.  (I'm scared to delve into engine rebuilding....I can adjust and bolt stuff on, but the honda had more trouble than I wanted to deal with....gave me more in trade than I paid for it)  Thus far it is only nekkid with a bad carbonfiber can (will replace when finances allow) and the weird headlights.  I'm debating either a drag bar or raised bar...but probably not until next year.

a) to each their own
b) no one asked you
c) some people enjoy spending 200 bucks on a beat up POS and turning it into something that is unique and interesting.  Anyone with a spare income can buy a harley...they all look the same to me.  Anyone can buy the new Buell "cafe racer" (1125cr I think) and look like they flew out of Japanese Anime.  Anyone can jump on a message board and spout self-righteousness.

OK then. By the way, that is a gorgeous peice of work galaxian. I would have a hard time considering your bike a "fighter" though. Far too nice!  I would maybe classify that as Restified perhaps. Restored, yet modified up to todays technology. Well done! ;)

You're confusing fighters with rat bikes.

Mine.

Galaxian's pristine chariot is the epitome of what a properly done 'Fighter is to me.  Brilliant work.
The thing about 'fighters is that they are a new genre (about 20yrs old) and even though they were pioneered by crashed/duct-taped euro-gixxers this is only half of the historical root-system.  The other half of the 'fighter equation' is the 1st gen 'superbikes' that range from the two-strokes of the end of the 60s to the big-bore 4-stroke power-houses that replaced them (starting with the 1st gen CB750 in 1969 and the original king:  the Z-1).  To exclude these bikes based on their lack of plastic origins is to ignore the history of streetfighters as well as the roots of performance based motorcycles.

At the age of 45 I have experienced 41 years of riding motorcycles and 36 years of racing them in some way-shape-or form...and this has been my 2 cents.  No intention of offending anyone.   ;D

I converted my FZ1 to a naked bike with factory Yamaha parts. I know the FZ1 comes naked in other countries so some might not think its a streetfighter. Anyways, I'm looking for an older bike to build up as a cafe racer and came across this site. I'm glad I found it.

i still don't fully understand what a street fighter is, a cafe is a early/retro race bike, then you have sportbike, superbike, and hyperbikes. i dont believe it has to be built because the companies that are making these, some of you so call styled street fighters only have 150+ workers. i a sure you there is plenty of heart and soul that are put into these bikes. the Benelli nor Buell market their bikes as street fighters. correct me if im wrong but the benelli is a cafe racer and the 1125cr is one too cr = cafe racer.

I agree with your sentiment, but you have to have "styles" of bikes or else everything gets homogenised. Even in this cafe forum, under the "big arse builds" there are cafes, chops and bobbers, and trackers. And there's cool bikes in every folder. Go figure  ::)

Anyway, IMO you can NOT have a factory built fighter. It's a contradiction because the fighter is built in the cafe tradition of taking a fast factory sports bike and ripping all the cosmetic crap off it. It started in the UK (where cafe's started too...) where courier bikers either wrecked their GSXR's and ripped the plastics off them, or took the plastics off before being wrecked so they could use their bikes for work. Adding motocross bars was also done to make the bikes more useable for all day courier work. I don't care if Ducati have built a naked bike and called it a "streetfighter" - it isn't.... >:(

So I've probably said too much, but that's a brief history lesson and some fundamental criteria for fighters - removed plastics and 'crosser / upright bars  ;D

Wow - I like what you've done so far, but those SRAD tails are HUGE....:o

That's 600 Katana front and rear ends?? Is that the 550 swingarm? And headaches with lining up the chain??

IMO a newer gen R6 tail would look neat on this one (a LOT smaller than  the SRAD  ;))

I definately want to remove this tail!!

Katana front and rear wheels
Slingshot GSXR front end
550 rear swingarm with custom made spacers for the chain alignment and custom brake brace

I'm trying to get the guy at the local bike yard to take my SRAD seats and tail as a trade for a smaller tail piece...........we'll see.

New to this forum - but not new to Specials [ add your own name ]. 8)

Let's go back to basics - in the 60's the idea was to take a stock set of factory parts and build a bike to your own tastes - either through choice or neccessity.
.
No factory bike was [ is ] perfect as it left the factory, and let's face it -Hot Rodders were around a long time before restorers! ;)

So in the sixties you built your own. Because Norton was percieved as the best chassis and Triumph the best engine - the Triton was born. Some of us preferred the BSA chassis [ Gold Star] - maybe still with the Triumph engine - ergo Tribsas.

Then there came along the bikes born out of - well what was in the shed. Like the day my Cammy Inter Norton mashed it's valves  ::)[ a week's wages ] - but I had a Constellation engine sat in the corner doing nothing........ an Enfield / Norton? Fancy something light and nimble - try a unit 350 / 500 Triumph engine in a Ducati chassis. or even an Enfield Crusader chassis.

That was the whole point of Cafe Racers - the styling could just as easilly have been Choppers or whatever - but we had flourishing Clubman's Racing in the UK, and that's what we wanted to emulate. Bizzarely - some of the road going Cafe Racers subsequently made it on the race tracks.

In MY book - a Cafe Racer / Streetfighter has to be built - not bought. 8) But hey, you have to start somewhere.

I dug my 636 out of storage, the beginning.

As she sets now.

Got another subframe, fixed what was left of the plastics & rattle canned them white. Bought Dunlop 616's & softened the suspension for light dirt work. Made a one off exhaust from a '04 header (no cat) & a cut down GILD. Used an '04 top triple with XS risers to mount up dirty bars with a bar end mirror & Speigel brake lines. Cheapo headlight from ebay. Replaced random screwed up stuff like broken brake rearset & waiting on an analog tach, renntec rack & better lights to finish her off for the time bein'.

She's ugly, but does everything damn well, I love my 636!

I rode her from Kansas to Nova Scotia & back in 9 days (16 days overall, stayed in Hali for a week) but that's a whole other story... :)

Hey fellas, haven't been over here in a while.  Got an email about some site changes and thought I'd check them out.  Since I'm here, may as well share what I've been doing on my fighter.  It's not your typical fighter per say since it's a '72 CB500 but it doesn't really fit into the cafe dept either.  Mods so far include ported head, 650 cam, swingarm extended 4", lots of ttabs cut off, clipons, 750F front end swap, CBR controls & master cyl, neck raked a few * to make up for the taller 750 tubes, custom tach face with Betty Paige, bicycle speedo, 750F tank, , replacement top tree, CB400 rear wheel, hell I know I'm forgetting a ton of stuff.  The pics show it with 2 different tails.  One is a foil wrapped foam mold I was going to glass and the other is a CBR1000RR tail that I borrowed to check for fitment.  I've got a race tail from a R1 on the way.  Got it cheap so I could cut it up & make it fit.  Still lots of work to do but it already turns heads when I pull it out of the garage.

Yep, the CBR tail is huge.  It needed about 2 inches taken out of the middle to fit right.  Buddy wanted $75 for it and it was too much to spend for me to F up so I found the R1 tail for less than $30.  No worries about cutting it in half now.  It will work out well when I'm done with it.  I can understand you not seeing it as a fighter but it's not so much cafe either.  The clipons are mounted above the tree, no rearsets, stretched swingarm, and a rocket tail.  All kinda go against the typical "cafe".  Noone ever said that a fighter had to start life as a crotch rocket.  Not many folks rake either style of bike either, not that I did too much of that... only about 4 or 5*.  It doesn't really fit any particular category but it's my creation and an extension of my personality and creativity.  I'd like to get rid of the "cafe" looking 7" headlight and go with a set of 2 projectors on the front too but I can't find any that fit the tight budget I'm on right now.  I may just fab up some kind of windscreen type thing that fits on top of the huge headlight for now.  I could keep going on but I don't want to clutter up the thread too much.  Feel free to check out my build log over on TCU.

Thanks for that compliment, I feel the same way about the x1's and z1000's (the z1000 was the only other bike I really lusted after other than the Buell). I've seen, though, that Buells aren't received very well in some places and they catch a ton of flak about their origins. The great thing is I go to bike nights and I'm the only X1 in a sea of cbr's gsxr's and harleys, and when I crank it up I get a bunch of stares. I love it, and while its a bit temperamental, I wouldn't trade it's awesome handling and power and feel for nothing. To answer your question, yes its a Millennium Edition...number 178 of 800, built around valentines day in 2000 (based on the signatures of Buell employees on the undersides of the tank and fender plastics.

I'm currently personalizing it with a custom rattle can paint job (on a spare set of plastics)

It will be slightly more "fighter-ized" when I'm done with it.

Here's my '85 ZX900 that I'm bringing back ... fighter'ish at the moment just cause I'm looking for a better mid fairing (mine is busted into 3-pcs).

After 2 months of work its back on-the-road and running great.  Will pull apart and re-paint the bodywork (original scheme) this winter to complete the resto.

Gray,
Very cool!  I used to work at an HD/Buell shop for years while going to grad-school; one of the funnest times of my life.  Love the O.G. Lightnings...just a fantastic bike.  Nice that you got a Millinium and you "know" what it is.
Also glad you cleared up that you were painting a 'spare' set of plastic...almost pooped there when you said you were painting the plastics... heh-heh-heh!!!

I don't race it, just street riding.  I'm not running the slicks, that was just a set I used when I mocked it up.  I'm running some Contis now.  The tail is a fiberglass CBR600 aftermarket piece.  The section between the seat and tank I fabbed along with the undertail.  The subframe is a modified CBR600.  Most of the bike is one off, including the frame, rearsets, etc.

Here's a side shot.

Thanks Bikeboy.  No, I was to lazy to do a build thread. I wish I wold have now. I have been watching your build thread for months.  You have definitely inspired much of my bike. It is a 82 cb900f. The swing arm, front end, rear sets, tail lights, and carbs are from a 92 gsxr750. I got the carbs mounted last night and got it fired up. I think Im going to like the carbs.

They are the BST38SS from a 92 GSXR750.  The bike starts easier, and has much better throttle response.  I am running the stock needles on the middle notch.  Stock pilots.  Idle mixture screws 3 turns out, and 130 mains.  K&N clamp on air filters and no air box.  Runs Great!!

It did really well when I changed the bulbs to PIAA H6M bulbs. The PIAA's fit in the same way the originals did, but much, much brighter.

So here's a photo of my ninja 250 fighter. It's a work in progress but I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along. Still have to finish up the seat cowl and upholster the seat.

What do you guys think?

Right-On, I dig the light Brackets!!

Is that the oem exhaust header set up for that kawi??

Cheers man, still need to take off the fairing mounting tabs on the tank as well.

Yep stock headers. The new gen ninjas have a 2 into 1 headers. The reason the exhaust loos good though is my old man works for an engineering/hydraulic company. He got the guys there to make up an elbow to attach the muffler as it has a different diameter to the headers. I think the angle was like 25degrees from memory. It looks much better this way.

Wow apologies for the massive delay right now.

If your still wondering,

The side covers are factory, no mods. The seat has been cut and 6 inches removed, then re attached the rear section so the factory tail can still be mounted. Trimmed off the front sections of the tail and re shaped the curve to match the side covers. . Cut the frame off from the bridge where the factory seat would rest on.

And that's basically it.

Cheers!

My 1989 EX500 Ninja budget street fighter from a few years back. Was just a pile of parts when I got it. Engine ran really well, but finding bodywork was expensive and I like the naked look better anyways, so I chopped it into this street fighter you see. It was a blast to ride. I sold it when I was buying a new house (and well, I had plenty of bikes at the time). I missed it so much, however, that I've started a new EX500 build. That one I'll post in the builds forum eventually, as it's an on-going project :)
