Hey guys I took the bike out the other day and all my power died. After a push back to the house and checking the fuses it turned out to be 2 burnt fuses. So I replaced them and tried again, same thing happened it blew the fuses. So im thinking its the voltage regulator/rectifier. But i don't know witch is witch.

its ether this

Can anyone tell me witch is witch and kind of what they do?
Also i was looking at this part because i would rather replace old parts with new parts not used parts...

Anyone know of this part will work on my bike?https://grimcyclesalvage.com/catalog/images/p/1014/101403_01_md.jpg

Top one is the rectifier, bottom is the regulator. The rectifier is converting the A/C of your alternator into D/C power. The regulator keeps the voltage steady.

I just spent two weeks farting with electrical problems and bought a combined rec/reg unit from Oregon that fixed it.
the old parts bench tested fine. Well worth the $80.

they have a FAQ to walk you through testing. MikesXS also has a Solid State Rectifier/Regulator.

Sweet thanks guys! never thought about the motor producing AC and having to convert it. Well I will look around and see what kind of options i have.

well the Regulator/Rectifier came in today and came with no wire diagram... so a little time on the internet and here is what iv found.

The main thing is what is the field or the green wire?
And do the 2 orange wires go to the coils?

Any help would be grate!

That was the nice thing about the one I got (but paid more for). It came with the correct plug, all I had to do was mount it and plug it in. Even came with stainless hardware and a instruction sheet that I never looked at.

Btw - my plug only had 4 wires so I can't help you there. Isn't green normally ground?

Well after spending some time on the xs400 site i found that black was ground. I think i got it all wired right, i started the bike up and it ran off the way i had it wired so something was right but i was having more carb issues and could never get it running long enough to get a voltage reading to see if it was charging.

Got to love old bikes!

honda53rider - did you ever figure it out? I now have a XS400 with charging issues.
