DT100 Hipster Build (mantra: nobody is doing it)

Not many pictures lately, I have been mostly pulling things apart and cleaning them up, next month I will be prepping for paint and wood working.

I am thinking of going with an x-grip style mount with wood accents for the phone holder, anyone have much experience with these?

Not beat a semi-dead horse but you can buy fork oil from heavy weights down to what's called "water weight" which is zero wt. I have 5wt in my CX500 (USD Showa forks) and mix those, at least then you know by the combined weights what you'd end up with and use a superior product as compared to ATF, I rest my case.
Cheers, 50gary

Based on the front forks on my machine what would you recommend?

As I said in reply #95 I'd start with 10wt and evaluate from there on. If you want a bit more firmness add a bit more fluid to each fork. This works simply because fluid does not compress and the air above the fluid does compress so the less air the more firm they become. Do not confuse the damping with the springing. Fluid level should be measured from the top edge of fork (cap off of course) down to the fluid level with spring out, fork compressed, and vertical. In other words, off the bike. Damper rod forks are pretty limited so don't expect too much.

Thanks 50gary, I will probably run 15wt and 10wt in it as well, I like to start firm and go to soft and then come back.

I like to run a pretty firm front though. On my first CX500 I settled on 10wt on the front (even though the manual calls for ATF). on my second I settled on 5wt. I need to get another CX, maybe that will be my next project.

Reasons I haven't been updating this post:

1. Kids are here for the summer

2. Trying to finish getting my Nighthawk ready to sell for some tuition money and fix the Goldwing money

3. Finishing up my friend's ex500 so that I can get the wing in the garage and on the road again so that I can work on this little beauty here are some pictures of the super cheap value paint job

if you like a firm front and want some easy adjustability go to napa and get some 1/8 pipe thread schraider air bungs so you can experiment with a few lbs of air better yet is use a combination of fittings there are lots of ways to go about it but the end result is one shrader hooked up to both sides

There is a similar style set up on my cb450, maybe it I will make a trip over to the boneyard and see if there is one that I can fit onto Piper

It has taken a couple years, and a couple of other projects, but I am ready to get this guy fired up again, Oh and I got married and had a kid. Next post will be me bringing this from mom and dad's place back to its home
