1981 CM400T scrambler style

Not_a_sunbeam

1980 Honda CM400T
1981 CM 400T
Finally got around to completing this build over the past winter, with a slight change- decided to build more of a scrambler instead of an old school cafe profile. I liked the idea of something that could handle rougher terrain too- not really far removed from a cafe to boot. I intially intended to post as I went, but, well, you know. . stuff. I actually love this bike it handles great on dirt roads, fun to ride. More posts to come, I promise.

The finished bike attached.

Sorry, but please explain how it handles rougher terrain with spindly 33mm forks and no fork brace?

No explanation is warranted or forthcoming. If you have a useful comment, submit it.. if all you have is snotty claptrap, go annoy someone else.

I have the same bike and before I took her all apart she handled the pitted up dirt roads really well. Couldn't tell ya how...but it surprised me as well.

It's a valid question on my part,
I owned and road a 78 cb400
I live on a farm in Quebec
It's ability to handle a dirt road in the spring was marginal at best even with the front fender/brace.
Let alone all the shit that would end up on the inside of the fender.

Dirt roads verses single track are way different animals. Just swapped my tires to a more aggressive pattern will make it handle way better. A fork brace would definitely make it more constrained but the tires will make up for most of it.

Yeah, don't dare go off road unless you have a $20k ADV bike.

Back in the day, they didn't care about explaining, they just did it. ;)

From what i've seen, the 20k adv bike is way too damn heavy for my idea of off roading.
A 500$ tc185 on the other hand is perfect.

I would not have ridden my cb400 through a plowed field like i did with my TC185, but that probably has more to do with the weight difference than anything else. Perhaps my interpretation of rough terrain (plowed fields) is different than his.

I don't consider this a valid question as posed.. it's just you diminishing my bike. Thems fightin words. I already stated that it handles well. Is it possible you might be a less skilled rider? Let me pose a similar ridiculous question: Please explain how you handle riding any rough terrain when you can't even ride a cb worth a shXt on a farm? lol. Catching on?

I agree. I actually have a fork brace in the works.

^ Miss the good ole days! Like what you did with the CB.

Not fighting words, just asking.
You could have just answered it still seems to handle alright to me. You have a fork brace in the works though, thus kinda validating/answering my question. I was not trying to diminish the bike at all, you jumped to that conclusion. Maybe because you were also thinking the same? Oh wait, you were since you admitted to having a brace in the works.

I through the same shit at my tc185 and then a lot worse than i ever did at the CB and it seemed to eat up whatever i dished out to it.

Frame mods. obviously this bike needed a different perch if command was to be had off road, so Changed the line a bit.

Whacked off the wingy looking seat supports, frogged them for upright 1" tubing. Horizontal members dramatically mitered to weld to the existing frame. Had to hot form them as they were welded. Also deleted as many mounting tabs as possible.

Re: 1980 CM400T scrambler style

I didn't care for this seam so I ground it off to a lower profile and welded it.

?

I never road a CB off road or made a scrambler. I like street bikes on the street and dirt bikes in the dirt.

Give me a CR or XR any day.

But I am building a scrambler-ized XS400 for the wife. She wants something like this with trial style tires, but it will be all for looks, not off road abilities

*sigh*

1) I stated in OP that I love the bike and that it handled well in the dirt. You wanted me to repeat that in defense of your snotty ass question? Just asking? You called my forks spindly. It was an insult.
2)The fork brace was in the works before I ever encountered you. My intentions are to *improve* handling that I was already impressed with for this particular bike to begin with.
3) You are now back pedaling like a kid on a tricycle.
4) I see no pics of your bike or any reason I should consider your slop-toast opinion on anything. Why don't you go troll twitter or something?

Cookie cut the seat from a pattern I made then formed and welded it.
