"Black Sunshine" A 77 CB550 Monster

H'ok.. so I just picked up an old '77 CB550k Motorcycle for about $200.. My original idea was to turn it into more of a cafe racer, but the more I looked into it, the more I liked the idea of it being a brat bike. Well, I don't know if brat bike is quite the right term for it.

This is how it looked when I picked it up off of CL.

I quickly ripped the engine out and moved it down into my basement so I could start working on it.

I stipped the CB down to the frame

I did want to run a new front fork so I picked up a junk CBR600 for about $150 and ripped off the fork, brakes, wheels, clip ons.. I haven't decided if I wan to use the mag wheels yet, it kinda depends on $$ and how it looks in the end..

So after owning the bike for a month, that's about where I am.. My next plan of attack is to figure out what I am going to do for a seat...

Looks like a good start. I'm onboard for the build. I've got a 75' 550 I'm just starting on.

Could just be the angle in the pic, but that right CBR fork tube looks bent. Easy enough fix if it is, new tube isn't that bad a hit. Should be an interesting build.

Check freecycle for seats, the one for my CL project came off a free exercise machine. Perfect shape, perfect size, foam is protected by 3/16" thick rubber, heavy gauge steel set pan. All it needs is an interesting cover sewn up to hide the rubber.

It's just the picture is at a weird angle.. The fork tubes are luckily straight..

I have a few parts in the mail but I am just doing some rough fittings..

Just finished mounting a 78 CB750 Rear Swing arm so I could use my rear disc brake. It was roughly the same as my CB550 swing arm, just need to make some shims and spacers and the rear end looks good!

Also got some new clip ons, (ones that weren't bent) and a welder from a friend! So expect some frame work next!
