hi,i'm a tugboat captain in b.c. working mostly on the fraser river and vancouver harbour.

I went down to the harbour asking about jumping on a ship to china. They all laughed at me. Possible? Cost? Pay? Tugboat captian...so cool

As the name implies I am a Helicopter mechanic. I am charged with the care and feeding of an EMS helicopter (BK-117 to be exact). I love my job.

That Max is hilarious lookin! looks like a cool guy

You should see when they shave the wool, and leave the hair on their heads, they look like they got crazy dreads. We just saw one at the city Family X-Mas party. We run the zoo and they bring some of the animals for the kids to pat etc. They brought one of our Alpacas and he had just got his hair cut. looked crazy. I didn;t get any pics though.

Cheers,

Maritime.

Don't mean to hijack. Hey Maritime, There are two breed types. Could have been a Suri (Longer fleece looks like dreads) We raise Huacayas which have a tighter fleece.
Here are what suri look like

Here is Max again this spring after being shorn. Don't anyone tell Max I posted this. He was trying to hide until it grew back.

Heck yes man, we rely on you to keep us in the air when we need to be! We use Bell 206's here. Man they're cramped! I have to admit, I'm jealous of the BK-117 guys.

Troy, I love those pictures of Max! It seems like I saw some pictures of your alpacas in the snow somewhere. They were such surreal pictures....

I'm a cot jockey. In the name you'll know it as, I'm a paramedic.

10 years in the field in a high call volume rural environment. I just got certified as a certified flight medic and a critical care transport specialist. I'm shooting for doing air medical transport (flight medic). It's always been my dream.

10 years of being overworked and underpaid. But I wouldve quit a long time ago if I didn't give me some gratification and make me feel purposeful. Can't imagine doing anything else.

Sounds like most of your calls begin with:
"Hey Merle....watch this!"

My grandmother and i have been trying to talk my grandfather into raising alpacas for years. There a bit too old to be taking care of them obviously, so i doubt it will happen, but they have 50+ acres and a barn so rooms not an issue. I love those animals. When friends of mine were still in college at Edinboro (near Erie PA.)about 10 years ago we used to go drink in this field where a bunch of alpacas lived. The farmer didnt care as long as we didnt leave a mess. The alpacas would come hang out with us. Good times.

Yep it was a Suri, brown and white. They have both at the zoo but I think tey brought him because he was smaller.

This thread is becoming "Troy's alpaca fan site". Is it true that they are so docile that they won't defend themselves? One of my wife's old clients had some and said she had dogs that stayed with them at all times.

So Ive mentioned that I recently went to culinary school. Before that and after high school I played poker for about 3 1/2 years. I was immature, had bad money management skills, and was letting the variance of the game stress me out. I had always wanted to cook so I decided to flip a coin; heads, I quit poker and go to culinary school, tails I continue on with poker. After graduating jobs were a bit scarce because of the economy, and I really wanted a break anyways. Since I wasnt working, the bit of money I had saved up started to run out pretty fast, so a few months after school ended I started grinding the small stakes. Its kind of a double edged sword.. on one hand I get to play a game and earn money doing it, on the other it spoils the shit out of you. Im not afraid of hard work, but lets be honest, playing a game on your computer is more attractive. If all goes as planned Ill be moving out to LA before next winter thanks to this game!

Wow - popular thread!

Aside from being all-round DTT support staff (that Loco Leon guy is really only good at a few things, which will go unmentioned here) I have a day job that pays the bills.

I work at TELUS, one of the major national communications companies in Canada. We have wireline services (local phone, long distance, ADSL internet...) in Alberta and British Columbia, as well as television services delivered both through ADSL and satellite, and our national wireless HSPA, CDMA and IDEN networks.

We have gazillions of customers and I make sure each and every one of them gets their bills on time every month :) From the collection of usage data from our networks through to the printing and mailing of our invoices and everything in between.

I've been in telecommunications for the past 17 years, and have been building/operating billing systems for 16 of those. Been with TELUS for going on 8 years now. It's a big corporate job, but we were born out of a small wireless startup called Clearnet, which was acquired by TELUS just before I came on board. The small entrepreneurial culture is still strong, even though we're now 30,000 employees big.

i hate my day job, that's what i do for 8 hours a day.
i work in IT after reluctantly dropping marketing at university and mechanical engineering at trade school.
had to pay the bills, got used to having money so got used to having debt. really want to make a change but can't afford to do anything i find interesting :p

currently saving my dollars with a view to buy out a powdercoating business or cafe, or both.
