DT250 Tracker

Progress is slow but I now have a 19" front wheel. Hopefully some tyres in the next few weeks.

This build is coming along slowly. Too many other bikes to deal with at the same time!
Anyhow, just got my rear hub back from being bead blasted. New spokes and rim to match. Time for a coat of paint and a wheel build.

Also added a 12v conversion kit to the bike and started working out the wiring. It's been hard trying to find all matching components, this model seems to have been different to a year earlier and later models in many ways.
There has been a lot of cutting and joining, testing and trial end error. I now have almost everything working though and starting to make a few customisations.

Rear wheel is all laced up and done. Sprocket carrier and brake plate assembled with new sprockets and shoes. I just need 1 new oil seal, rim tapes, tubes and tyres now. Finally seeing some good progress.

With any luck, wheels will be on the bike next week.

It's an expensive process building wheels, the spokes and rims are not cheap! Very happy with the end result though.

Wheels, tyres, brakes and chain are all on. Now has a 19" front rim with Pirelli scorpion rubber.
Still a lot of work to do but with wheels on, it's starting to look like a bike again.

Now to finish off the electrical work, then onto the suspension. Planning to replace rear shocks as the originals are shot. Looking at some YSS or Hagon replacements about 25 to 30mm longer than the originals.
Forks will most likely need heavier springs, some valving and stroke shortened. I will probably dive into those next.

Thanks, what do you see as the main difference? Quality or performance?

Looking good!

From personal experience I'd choose YSS over Hagon.

All three: Quality (most YSS can actually be overhauled or at least re-sealed), performance (at least overhere you can have them built to spec) and price (Hagons are for what they are, terribly overpriced, only being approx. 100 Euros cheaper than some proper midrange YSS).

Also I tried Hagons and YSS on my XT500 and the Hagons were absolute rubbish, the YSS were built for my weight. I admit, I later on ended up with Bilsteins on my XT500, because I needed longer shocks, so I can't say much for the longevity of the YSS.

'It's an expensive process building wheels, the spokes and rims are not cheap! Very happy with the end result though.'

But oh so worth it! Looking great man.

Interesting about the feedback on shocks too, will be considering this with my current build.

Thanks Jadus, I think I will follow dernanno's advice with the YSS shocks. I am planning to visit a local suspension shop that sells both before making my decision though. Either way they will be sprung to match bike and rider weight.
Will be a month or so before I get around to shocks though.

Still haven't quite got the electrical sorted so I thought I would jump onto the suspension while I am at it.
The rear shocks have pitted shafts and not worth the rebuild. They measured 305mm eye to eye which seems shorter than standard, I thought 320mm was correct length?
After much research, I ordered 330mm YSS gas charged with springs to suit 80kg rider.
The front end is off a 1990 dt200, one fork leg is appart and looks in good condition. Ordered springs, seals and emulator valves. Will also make spacers to reduce stroke length by 50mm.
Hopefully all of this will arrive early next week!

YSS shocks arrived today, built and delivered in only 2 days. Springs, seals and emulators for the front end as well.
Great service.

Rears are on. Going to put the front back together shortly with the new springs and valves......
It is getting close to ridable.

I went for the basic gas charged shocks. They have some valving adjustment and threaded preload. Cost $400.

Which model shock did you go with? I see they have several different ones available.

Forks are starting to come together. These are dt200 forks. New springs and emulators. Stroke length shortened by 30mm.
Looking forward to testing them out.
