1972 SL175 Ridestoration

Hey all,

Started a CB100 scrambler build here a year ago... Life happened (fixed up a 1966 Mustang for the Gambler 500 Photos https://photos.app.goo.gl/MUYfPqZ6Nx3QimDe9, got a dog, etc etc).

But! I want a trail bike for camping trips this summer, so work on the SL175 has started!

All stock. Parked in the early 80s. Owner passed away and wife took it to the local KTM dealer for an oil change/carb rebuild. Runs pretty well.

Goals for this bike: Eventually, I'll take everything apart and make it all shiny. For now: Cut weight where possible. Improve suspension where possible. Keep mostly stock looking.

Step one: The battery was toast. Lithium battery picked up, dropping a few lbs. Lithium battery means the charging system needs to be in good order. Installed a sparck moto regulator/rectifier.

The stock muffler was rotted out. Replacements are $$$. Found CL175 exhaust on eBay for cheap and it fits... decently.

Tail light/plate bracket weighed almost 5lbs. Got a small LED tail light and fabbed up some brackets with some scrap aluminum:

With that, it was time for some rides around town!

Next steps: I have some IRC GP-1s to mount up. Chain is servicable, but rusty. Also think it could use slightly lower gearing for trail use (easily reaches 60mph indicated right now). Figure out what to do about suspension and exhaust.

Questions:

What do people do for rear shocks on these things? Nice aftermarket units are all eye-to-eye. I'd prefer not to cut up the swingarm, but I also want a bit of an upgrade (firmer damping, stronger springs).

Anyone know if any slightly better forks would fit? Maybe off an older CR250 or something? Want to stick with drum front to keep stockish appearances, just again - would like something a bit firmer (servicing these might help, but they do have some bubbling that'll probably mean regular seal replacements).

Finally exhaust: The CL exhaust works well enough... But! I don't think it counts as an approved spark arrestor (and I want to ride this thing on forest roads in Washington). I would like to keep it up high though so I can fabricate a skid plate under the engine (stock exhaust runs down there and has a roost shield type deal).
