CB100 Scrambler Beginner Bike Build

About 3 years ago my brother bought a 1972 CB100 at a swap meet thinking he'd use it to learn to ride on. It was a runner but had been used as an OHV and had most of the lights removed, missing side covers, bent handlebars.

Fast forward to today, and my girlfriend wants to learn to ride. Had him drop the 100 off so I could fix it up for her (and hopefully him) to learn on. Found a bit a rust and fell into the rabbit hole.

Ongoing album can be found here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/j1SozUfky6q2o3gg2

So far it's been stripped to the frame, degreased, sanded, painted with rust reformer and engine enamel. Wheels cleaned up, new brake shoes, new tires and put back together.

Along the way I've made a few modifications:

SL125 exhaust - had to fab up a mount for it from some 1/8" 6061. Does anyone have a black header paint that's not super matte?

$30 Amazon seat. Not comfortable, but I don't see a CB100 as a long distance tourer. Quality seems... Good enough.

Chopped the front fender. May still cut down to a reinforcement bracket only and possibly add an SL front fender.

Various other bits and pieces.

Current plans going forward include:

1. SL125 rear fender (on the way)
2. Maybe plasti-dip the wheels a semi-gloss gold to match my Ducati...
3. XL100 skid plate (on the way) hoping it fits!
4. 12V conversion (seems to be differing opinions on this, hoping I can just add a regulator/rectifier, 12v battery, flasher relay, lights and be good to go).
5. Full LED light set.
6. I have all new cables and controls ready to go on.
7. Thinking about 3D printing an intake runner - I don't like the stock airbox toolkit battery conglomeration but I hear these 100s don't take kindly to a pod filter.

Let me know what you think!

Its looking sweet. 8)

I restored a 72 CL100 a couple years ago.
Over her Christmas break - My daughter and I did the 12v conversion using 72 CB350 Stator and coil, sparckmoto R/R, flasher, leds.
Its worked out great.
Link to my 6-12v conversion. Takes you straight to page 42 of my build... http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=65898.420

Also, on my builds I use a 5 pin relay to isolate the ignition. This dedicated circuit provides full clean battery power directly to coil and spark plug. Rather than sharing the circuit w the rest of the bike.

Looks like it's no longer available on Amazon (just ordered about a month ago): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075KZ1QXR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you search for "cafe brat seat" about 1000 come up on Amazon.

Fit is... Ok. The front tabs slide on the frame bracket fine, the rear brackets don't go back far enough to match up with the stock mounting holes. Waiting to see how the SL125 fender fits, but should be a pretty simple matter to extend the brackets about 1" towards the rear to mount. Otherwise it just sits on the frame with some removable rubber pads. Not perfect, but pretty great for the price!

Trek97: Is the stator / coil swap strictly necessary? As I understand it, the stator puts out far more than 12V AC and the coil can be run on one of the outputs (and even works without a battery).

Granted, the stator won't output as many amps when rectified to 12V instead of 6V, but hopefully the swap to full LEDs will make up for the lower current draw.

Looking at a wiring diagram for reference: https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5093/5467533381_7706b6c4f7_b.jpg

It appears that the stator runs directly to the main switch and then the coil. The battery effectively was the regulator on these bikes. I already have a sparck moto regulator/rectifier on order, along with their flasher relay and turn signal diode.

A bit of progress.

Bought a beat up SL125 fender on eBay for $20. Chopped it up a bit to fit the CB100 frame and kick it towards the rear more:

Found what seems to be the only set of headlight brackets that work on 27mm forks (and by work, I mean they come with a big pile of rubber to wrap around the forks). They were super long, so trimmed them down a bit and mounted the LED headlight. If I end up painting the wheels gold, these (along with most of the chrome will likely end up black):

Started working on a battery tray, quickly realized I came up with something I wouldn't be able to bend in my brake... Back to the drawing board with that:

I'm still working on my CB100, just lazy, and over whelmed I think do to having too many projects at the same time.

I was working on my at the same time Trek was, and he's done and all i did was get mine to run for a day, pee all the gas out on the ground and it's under a blanket in the storage shed.

Been there for some time now. But, may pull it out again when all this over time at work stops.

Like to see some more pix of yours in it's current state. And I hear ya on the headlight brackets, hard to find something that works and looks good.

Curious about the fenders to, especially the front.

All the pictures I have are in the album linked in the first post. If you want a specific angle of something I can take some more tonight.

The front fender is the factory CB100 fender trimmed short. It rubs the tire a bit so I'll probably make some plates to move it up a couple inches (it's just friction fit between the forks in the last few images).

Looks like its going to be a cool ride for her and or him. I dig that SVO sitting in the garage too!

Thanks! I've had 3 SVOs since I was about 15. Surprises a lot of people to see a turbo intercooled 4 cylinder under the hood!

Air cleaner showed up. Off a 1980s Shadow 750. A little bigger than I thought it'd be... Anyway, the plan is to 3D print an intake. Thinking either perpendicular to the bike or possibly have it swing all the way around the frame and aim forwards on the left side (a little higher than the image where it's sitting on the motor).

Thoughts? Hopefully the large filter + long intake will alleviate the problems I've been hearing about running a pod and give it a unique look.

Thoughts? Hopefully the large filter + long intake will alleviate the problems I've been hearing about running a pod and give it a unique look.

If you dont have a CV carb there is no problem w a pod filter other than jetting it correct. :)

While generally true, the CB100 has never responded well to drastic changes in intake tract length. The type of filter used isn't the issue.

Does the area of the filter not make a big difference as well? If not, I'll probably find something a bit smaller and still print the correct length intake runner.

Got a bit of work done on the bike this weekend... Bent up a little battery / electronics tray:

Anyone have a good fuse/distribution box that's a bit smaller than the one in the last picture? Probably only need about 3 fuses...

What's the process for tightening the head bearings on these bikes? The service manual I have is pretty quiet on it - only mentioning the top nut being tight enough that you don't feel slop in the forks but not so tight that the bars won't easily move. What about the nut under the top of the triple tree?

The nut under the top triple tree is the nut they are talking about in the service manual. It is pretty spot on too. think of it as a wheel bearing...too tight the wheel don't want to spin, too loose and it will shake and wobble going down the road. Tighten it and work the forks side to side and front to back. Get the front to back wobble out and make sure its not hard to turn left and right.

Thanks! I'd guess the top nut just gets tightened enough then to keep it from coming apart, didn't see a torque spec for it.

If intake length really is the important bit, I think I'll buy a smaller pod and print a shield/intake for it to have something a bit less visually large.
