The CL350 named Conrod - Beater Build

I've settled down in Dallas for just a bit and have been picking up some business, but while here I couldn't resist paying $250 for a complete and original CL350. Non-runner of course.

She's a beater. Lay 'er down, run in the dirt, never cry about those dings, beat-'er! But, conversely, the bike must perform above all other factors. Start first-kick, be super light and stripped, steer and brake and cruise at highway speeds.

Sorry I don't have pictures, I have no means to take any at the moment.

It's a K2, so here are my plans.

Sell/trade all of the chrome parts for faded/chipped rougher or ratted out parts. The pipes only have any rust at the bottom, hidden behind the bracket. Nice shiny chrome and nothing ratting inside.
Sell/trade the dinky or obtrusive elements, such as mirrors, starter, original air-filter boxes and side-covers, tins, carbs, etc.
Most importantly, I want to replace the very nice original-paint fuel tank with a more battered square tank from an early CB350. Rubber knee pads would be swell.

As for the color scheme, here we are:
IMG00109-20100915-2008.jpg

So I'll allow dust to settle into the semi-gloss clear-coat until it looks as though it has collected for years.

I want to get a hold of a vinyl Honda wing decal (1973-1988 with outlined "feathers") and use it to mask the design onto the tank. The wings will be gold-flake and the tank will be ebony or onyx, but the design will be faded and distressed. I want it to look as though it could have been painted in the late 60's.

I'll leave the exterior of the engine as-is. It's wonderfully grimy and dusty and could probably use more, but that will come after all new internals.

The wiring will be simplified to eliminate every possible lead and tucked into the frame. Because the battery box and air-boxes will be removed, it will be skeletal and the battery will be tucked under the seat somewhere.

Could I get the one-piece tach/spedo/headlamp from the early CB's/CA's to function on this one? I like the two clocks sharing an oval face and I'd mount it to dampen vibration.

Posting Pics Soon.

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

Here's some other bikes (some of which were posted on this forum) to give a basic color scheme and feel for the build. I want to get as close to this as I can, but with intact seat and wiring.

I prefer the dust-covered oil of the first pictures for the engine. I'm not too keen on the aluminum-oxide in that final one.

The entire idea is to make it look as though it was hot back in its day. Tuned, chopped, hollowed out, painted, but forgotten. Think of Chitty-Chitty bang-bang after its crash but before Dick went on and attached a boat hull to it...

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

WOW!

I really scored!

Having 10k miles on it, I expected much more wear, but it seems to me that everything was replaced at some point in its life! This means two things; first, that there are less stuck bolts and less elbow-grease required to clean, second, it means that somebody fucked with it!

Oh well, I was intending to replace every replaceable part anyhow.

As a bonus, they didn't bother to clean the outside of the engine. My, that lovely caked-on dust...

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

I really dig the plan for this bike, and am intending on something similar for my own. The problem is that mine is actually quite clean, so...I'm going to make it the basic color that I want, maintain the internals, and let street parking, Brooklyn, and time handle the rest.

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

I'm not that patient. I'll be adding plenty of faux touches, since I will be repainting the entire thing my color preferences.

I wish I knew somebody who had a dirty bike and wanted to swap my clean chrome (and a tiiiiny bit of cash) for their ratted out tin.

I don't want to destroy what I have here. There are some actually good parts as far as appearance, and with stock and availability getting low, I'd rather help somebody than add to the problem.

I have chrome pipes with just a *touch* of almost completely inconspicuous rust and a chip. I'd trade them and $50 (or shipping both ways) for a set that is 100% chrome and muffler free... I just want to get it done!

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

OK, I made a pile of for-keeps and for-sale and well...there's not a lot to keep. I feel like I'm selling the entire bike! Haha.

Somebody has offered me a price for this whole heap, and I've already sold the pipes. If they go through with the offer, the bike has paid for itself.

Here's the deadweight and chromosexual tendencies I'm cutting out.

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

I beat up on you when you showed up, and am cheered to see that you were not full of shit. I'm in for my plate of crow.

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

That doesn't mean I'm not a complete asshole. ::)

Haw. But I still don't have my own camera so pics here are going to be scarce. Good news is that I picked up a gig in Austin so when I get back I'll have a new smart phone and plenty of pocket change to take to the machinists.

In Dallas now, but I use a guy near Seagoville. Really did a number on our chewed up CB550f, even though his shop is mostly tooled for cars. Will name-drop if he can help with the 350.

I didn't say it would be a very big plate

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

I'll say!

I just got back from L&L Cycle and it's a wasteland! A few years back, I could stroll in and almost pull a complete xx350 Honda chassis out of the heaps. The guy said a few years ago he had "a million of 'em" and that there were so many of the "little shits taking up room" that he scrapped over a hundred of them! Then he said "ever since then, that's what everybody's looking for!"

I would have reacted somewhat like a hippie chaining their-self to a tree to save it from deforestation, had I witnessed such a tragedy...

Anywho, I did find a good number of parts for it. They're just hard to find, but when you've seen a thousand or so, you can pick them out of the heaps.

I picked up ratty points and tach side covers. One is the "Type 1" stamp.

I pulled a horn from who-knows-what that looks like nice bare cast aluminium. Matches what I'm going for. And I took some tins off of some 80's Honda that also match my theme.

There was a CB160 speedo/headlight assembly that I just had to pass on. I prefer to have a tach so if I can get something like a CB77 tach/speedo combo, I'd do that.

Questions!
1. Is there any classic Honda tach/speedo/headlight assembly that has the same reduction ratio as the xx350's?

2. What tach/speedo combination gauges are there for classic bikes with the same reduction?

Re: The CL350 named Conrod

I finally have a camera, crappy as it may be, so I'm uploading the work that has been done to this point.

I'm still searching for parts such as tank, exhaust, and VM28 carbs.

I have the top-end ready for machining. Decking, boring, honing, and grinding the new valves in. As you can see, the outside is uglier than NFL stars in drag, but inside is spotless and the gasket surfaces are near-mirror finish. The "oil" you see is inhibitor.

The only thing holding me up now is funds and availability of parts ::)

Here's Conrod:

Fresh piston sets and valves. All purchased from Sirius Consolidated in Canada. Great quality stuff.
Vulcan horns (high and low) that I added a bit of pitting and rust to. Looks very convincing.
This tail-light lens will be cleaned. I forget the maker's name but these were quite popular at one point. The hoods are harder to find.

Re: Personal CL350 beater!

All new bits, and our ugly motor. Remember, it was a barn-find that some first-timer put on the road and made a lot of mistakes along the way.

Inside vs. outside.

I get ragged on pretty good for being "lazy" since I tend to go towards the used and "tough-love" look. But in actuality it's very easy to dip a whole part in degreaser, then a sonic-cleaner, and apply fresh paint and buff it all even. It's much much more time-consuming to clean only within certain areas and we can't cheat by submerging the whole thing. I normally have to get the case liquid-tight and pour solvents inside. Then the paint requires many many more hours of treatment to make it appear abused but do its job, which is inhibit real corrosion.

It's very thorough and very meticulous. Depending on the paint, it can take just as long if not longer than a complete clean build.

Thanks mate!

Wouldn't mind seeing this one come to fruition.

Good luck with the aged paint. I had a go at it myself with reasonable success.

That reminds me of the old butt bump you wanted to got rid of. At least I think it was you :p

There was a tank and fiberglass pan that was just excellent. Probably painted in the 80's then left to chip and fade and came out nice.

Thanks!
