kz750 twin....bratstyle/cafe bastard (strap on sally) phase 1 complete

Re: (kz750 twin brutstyle) "STRAP-ON SALLY" by sinbad

so i scored a new set of harley spokies about a month ago.....heres the front....
check the nicely domed front rim.... awesome price from sydney motorcycle wreckers...(absolutely love that place)

IMG_0456.jpg

so now ill get some custom bearings from hoopers to match the r1 front axle....
and looking at a 13"/330mm harley semi floating disc.....
then ill need to space the radial caliper out 10mm i guess.....(as they use 320mm discs)
also have to get the hub machined down to match the width of the r1 front....
get some custom wheel spacers (inner and outer).....
then boom.....

haha it sounds easier then it is.... but i look forward to the challenge...

ive also sourced a stock triple setup so i can get the stem pressed into the r1 bottom.....(fun)

looks like ill be spending some time (and cash) with the local machinist.....

Re: z750 twin....bratish.... to usd or not??

ok so just got back from six weeks in thailand and laos....
absolutely awesome.....

all i could think about was different names for the bike....as i keep changing my mind im not going to commit until paint time...
so ive been dying to work on the bike and im back ready to get stuck right into it....
took her out onto the driveway for a quick shoot.....just to show you guys how shes looking...

Re: z750 twin....bratish.... to usd or not??

because i already have too many projects.....
and i want to finish this one.......to the extreme.....

i know you prefer the mags but what you think about these spokes and front end???
IMG_0636.jpg

also i need a 48mm starter hole plug.....
might just make one......or get one machined out of aluminium..

Re: z750 twin....bratish.... to usd or not??

I want to see this bike with the usd's and spokes for sure.

But dont you dare paint that tank. The patina is so good on it.

I think with the spokes and usd's, the bike will hit a new level!

z750 twin....bratish.... to usd or not??

I totally agree with swivel here - your bike is amazing as it is! I really dig everything about it. When I first saw the headlight I really didn't like it, 5 seconds later I loved it. It's a great looking front end - were it me, I would use it for another project. Just my 2 cents - you should of course do what you wanna do! Great job again..

Re: z750 twin....bratish.... to usd or not??

yeah these photo's have made me want to keep the front suspension on this standard.....
maybe ill just rebuild them with progressiv's and lower it 1.5 inches at the front....(just to bring it level)

i also just love the chunky toughness on these mags......so i think they'll stay
so because i got those rims for a steal.....i might actually hang onto them....and use them on a hd....eventually...
swivel what you think about this r1 front end on my vtr1000f??
the tank wont be getting painted......
how to preserve the rust?
also swivel....ive seen "push in" starter hole plugs......vented and non vented.....
so whats the benefit then of having 2 crankcase breathers???
also if its vented then "push in" should be ok (so long as it seals with a rubber grommet) because the pressure wont blow it out... the pressure will just be vented..

Re: z750 twin....bratish.... to usd or not??

Actually the r1 and kz750 are pretty close in weight..with the extra weight sinbad has dropped, id say they are nearly spot on..

Re: z750 twin....brat.... to powdercoat or paint engine covers??

so why is it a pain in the ass to powdercoat ally covers.....???
ive painted covers previously..... w engine paint, but too be honest i think the powdercoat would be alot more durable...

i was thinking- charcoal flat (slightly textured)
or going for a shadowchrome then a flat clear.....

i belive these spokies will be saved for another project....(at the moment)
however now im contemplating the usd front with these original wheels....

re-registering the vtr so i can ride something...... therefore im not rushing to get this back on the road....

also ill just note how much of a pain in the ass getting the phillips head engine bolts out was.....
what the hell where kawasaki thinking when they used these???
bought an allen key bolt set to replace then with....

Re: z750 twin....brat.... to powdercoat or paint engine covers??

ok so i bailed on the p/c......
painted one cover and it came up how i wanted....

thanks for the advice swivel..

all bolts are removed....yay.....new clutch and springs are in....yay....gasket surfaces cleaned and ready...yay...gasket kit on the way....yay....

Re: z750 twin....brat.... to powdercoat or paint engine covers??

hell yeah tron....
im going to be riding the tits off it once its done.....

swivel....
yeah ive got a new cable to cut/solder then she'll be sweet as....

i was thinking about making some fork shrouds (black) for inbetween the clamps.....
then maybe some fork gaitors (black)....
and paint the fork lowers (black)

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

haha i guess you meant to say sydney* is like that??
its funny because some mates nicknamed me "sinny" so a little confusing.....

i think my bike may already attract homo's due to the leather tank suspenders.....(not that theres anything wrong with that)!!!

i'll check out that fork wrapping idea.....
what is crc?
at one stage i wanted to wrap the forks with exhaust wrap to match the pipes..... i did it and thought it looked real shit....so took it off straght away....

i was thinking about a similar design to the triumph speedmaster shrouds....
with the bottoms aswell?? thats if i cant get the boots.....

im also going to ditch the bars in favour of some clip ons.....
i am however going to put them above the triple....thus lowering the front a tiny bit more......

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

Great build! I didn't know the kz750 came in a twin. My cousin has a kz750 LTD four with the bottom end slightly taken apart for a starter clutch replacement. Everything on your build so far is prefect. My vote for the wheels..keep the stockers if you can.

thats how they are on my 750. looks bad ass, I think.

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

Clip ons will feel like shit..

I agree, you will probably put them on, after a week be like WTF!

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

i have clip-on's on my kz650 and i like them. definitely gives the bike a lower ride style and fits the direction i'm going in. i plan on wrapping the up fork area with black hockey tape, that's another option. also, my pipes are being wrapped in black.

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

i guess we'll see what happens re: my clip on situation......

1 of the things i hated the most about this bike was those big horrible pillion rearsets....they looked shit and i had always thought about getting some made out of billet then painting them.....
i was looking at it the other day and said "f#ck it lets cut it"

heres some shots......

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

I love the bike, gives me some ideas. I also am putting USDs and spokes on a 750 twin, that pic tells me it IS a fantastic idea. I like what you did to the big exhaust hanger/rearset lumps, they truly are ugly stock.

Re: z750 twin....brat.... a slow evolution

thanks damarble.....
start a thread and get some pics up to build my inspiration (more) haha...

my clip ons arrived today......
im thinking about inverting them so they dont drop down so much......(10 degree atm)
we'll see what happens.....

it'll be a solid day in grandmas garage tommorro....
