'73 CB250 - Doing it right this time round.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

spray 2k my man. but there is a method. I'll PM you details. Spray bomb thread is pretty good reading btw.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Cheers guys, noted.

That rattle can bling thread is great. Don't know how I haven't stumbled on that before today.

I guess I'm going to have to give painting another try. That or I think I may be able to get my stuff painting though a mates work If I can do a few favours...lets hope haha.

I'm sure people are getting annoyed of how much I'm changing my mind about schemes, starting at the gulf, then a plain grey, and then back to gulf, and then an aged look, but I'm incredibly indecisive so...haha. I want it to be something I wake up in the morning and can't wait to jump on ...and....I think I may have finally settled on one ;D haha

The thing I really loved about the aged look was how the ageing process turned the original red paint into a colour I always image when I think of an old Indian boardtracker. So I think I may go down that route with a design similar to this.

The thing is, I go back to university in about a months time and, it being about 300 miles away, I can't feasibly take the bike back with me. I wanted to get it done before I leave, but I think I may have to get it about 80% complete looks wise by the time I go back, and take the spare motor with me back and rebuild/clean it up etc, then bring it back home at Christmas and finish the rest of the bike then....unless I can find a way to get the paint sorted in the next few weeks and then just take the motor back with me.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Little bit achieved today....mainly HITTING THE TON...

...in posts. haha

I had a problem with the tank mount clearance. The tank obviously isn't original so it had custom mounts that had been manufactured. I replaced the screws that held the condenser down with stainless Allen head bolts. Because they were much bigger than the original screw heads, they got in the way of the original mounts and made the mounts too wide to fit the tank.

So I had to cut a little groove out of the mount to allow the bolt to fit into it.

The cut had been cleaned up with a file after the pictured were taken. I'll give them a respray over the next few days.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Because I have the starter button in the headlight bucket, I needed a lot of clearance behind the speedo to get access to the it. I'm thinking of running the single stock speedo unit, so to create clearance, it may have to be mounted like shown.

I also whacked a few coats of satin black on the headlight bucket to see how it would look. I love how it turned out! So i'm picking up some more paint over the few days to spray the fender in the same black, and few other pieces like the side stand and battery box the same colour as the frame. Thinking of doing the engine mounts the same gold as the carb tops.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Ok, not very much achieved today due to the weather being a right PITA.

Got a delivery of Stainless bolts in so I replaced all the bolts already on the bike with them.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Put a few coats of paint on some parts.

Got the battery box sprayed in the same colour as the frame and sprayed the engine mounts in the same gold as the carb tops.

I also sprayed the front fender the same satin black as the headlight bucket. I really like the look of the all black front end.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

The coils are in perfect working order but looked a bit shitty. Seeing as they worked fine I didn't want to replace them so I just gave them a light coat of black to tidy them up a bit.

I don't think it should be a problem with heating seeing as coils don't get too hot...they should be alright like that shouldn't they?

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

There was a 10 minute break in the weather so I whacked the grinder out to take the stock gear shift 'nob' off (atleast I think its that...all I know is that it's not needed!)

It's currently in a few coats of primer to dry overnight and then I can spray it Metallic Graphite.

I also took the grinder to an old baking tray. Going to use it to make an inner rear fender. It still need a bit of shaping and then I plan to attach it to the frame using P clips. Probably going to give it a coat of the rubber fender undercoating to so that I don't get extremely pissed off with the sound of tiny rocks hitting sheet metal!

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Just finished spraying up a few parts.

Put a few more coats on the battery box and sprayed the bars satin black. Also finished spraying the old passenger peg mounts which now hold my rear sets.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

We have a roller! Although I actually haven't done anything to the wheels yet but had to put them back on as I'm running out of storage space. Eventually I think i'll be trying to get some shouldered rims with some SS spokes, but that probably won't be for some time. I'll just tidy these ones up when I can get round to it.

I also re installed the bars after their re-spray. I ran into a bit of a problem though. The left bar installed fine but I had a few problems with the right one. For some reason, no matter how tight I tightened the bolt, it wouldn't grasp the fork leg and would still twist as if it was loose, which never use to happen. So I tried to take it off and the bolt was stuck, so I ended up shearing it. So I think i'm going to have to modify the actual clamp thing on the bars to try and take a bolt better.

Oh, and just ignore the lawnmower/tractor in the pictures...haha

Edit: And the fact the tank is sloped in the 4th picture, guess I forgot to bolt it on properly..

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Finally got a package that i've been waiting to come through for 3 weeks from the Netherlands.

My bridge rectifier! If I can find some connectors and some solder I'll probably work on wiring and maybe installing that today. I'm going to cut the original wires off of the original rectifier so that its easier connect to the wiring system.

I read that I have to connect the wires like this:

Red/White to the '+'
Green to the '-'
Yellow to one of the '~'
Pink to the other '~'

Is that right? Any feedback would help because I am pretty useless at wiring, Cheers.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

Managed to install the rectifier as I found some info on the internet explaining the wiring for it.

Mounted it like this to act as a heat sync. I also installed the newly cleaned up regulator and the starter solenoid.

Also cleaned the engine up a little bit more and put the carbs back on using the new intake boots.

Think I'll be throwing it back in the frame tomorrow if I get some time.

Cheers man. I don't seem to get a lot done each day but I'm slowly making some progress hahaha

The starter motor was painted black with a brush so it looked poor. I was going to strip the paint and leave it as it was, but it was rusty and didn't clean up very well. So I put a few coats of gold on to protect it from the elements.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

I also made a temporary Tachometer block off plug as I'm only using the original speedo until I can get a much smaller after market tacho.

I just cut up an old cable I had lying around and whacked a screw in the end to block it off. Im going to solder around the edges of the screw to make it more secure.

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

One of the tappet covers also had a crack in it and a piece broken off which exposed the o-ring, so I soldered that up too! haha I'll file and sand it down smooth tomorrow morning...

...and included is a pic of how everything is sitting at the moment. Excuse the mess on the bench!

For some reason, it reminded me of the Lossa Engineering 'Solus' video haha

Re: '73 CB250 - Finally settled on Paint.

What size are those clip ons and do you have any idea where they originated? The reason I ask is that they look like early TZ250 34mm clipons. I don't know of any others with that overlap or the solid ends.
