74 cb750, First build.

Coast to Coast
So here it goes my first motorcycle, my first build and I couldn't be anymore excited! After doing months and months of research and combing through the countless build forums I decided I wanted to go with a cb750. Finding a bike to start with was surprisingly very easy and after only a few days looking in craigslist in ny, vt, and ct I found a 74 cb750 in great condition. After speaking to the seller I went up there that weekend and picked it up. The bike was ridden daily but was definitely not very well maintained.

I love the fairing, tell me you're selling it??

Also, I have worked on many neglected bikes and NEVER seen a master cylinder so nasty! Good luck.

Hey man, nice find. Very curious to hear how this turns out and what you needed to do to get this thing going smoothly. I had been eyeing that same post on craigslist but couldn't get over there to check it out. Immediately remembered it after seeing that fairing/furry seat combo

Lol the 70s fur cover seat was a hit with everyone who saw the bike when I picked it up. Mechanically the bike is fine in good condition same with the frame and tank but he really butchered the wiring. Well be posting about that shortly.

Re: 74 cb750, First build.

So shortly after getting the bike I went to breaking it down and cleaning it up. Although the bike was ridden regularly there was still allot of neglect when it came to cleaning it and making the proper fixes when needed. First thing to come off and get a thorough cleaning where the carbs. Aside from the road grime build up rust sediment in the bowls the internals where completely fine. However the wire harness was a completely different story. Random wires where cut, terminated, spliced for whatever reasons. I had already planned to buy a whole new harness anyway but still left a few questions.

Re: 74 cb750, First build.

Although this is my first build I know the direction I want to take it in and the final outcome I'm looking for. I decided to go with one of the rocket seats from Carpy and I'm very happy with it. I also went ahead and hammered some knee indents into the tank. Rather than buying a new to triple tree I chose to grind down the bar clamps and weld in the old holes since I'm going with clip ons. These pics where taken a long time ago. The top triple tree is now as smooth as can be and I was able to take a little more off after the pic was taken its currently off at paint. Wish I had a current pic of it, the shape it came out to be is pretty nice.

Re: 74 cb750, First build.

For this bike I'm going with red and white as the main colors.

Re: 74 cb750, First build.

My previous project at my house in vt. Really wish I could be using the garage up there for this build, but I'm not up there nearly enough.

what did you use to polish up the engine so well? There seems to be a lot of red cb750s being done of late, mine included:) Yours looks great!!

Re: 74 cb750, First build.

Sprayed the engine down with aircraft stripper first to get the old finish off then I took a wire wheel on a drill to it very carefully. After cleaning it off I put on some mothers aluminum polish.

I'm gong to spend more time on it and try to polish it a bit more. The areas are really hard to get into.
