I agree the Koch exhaust routing is a bit awkward.

I was thinking of doing something similar. I found a thread on a different forum on how to construct your own fiberglass-like subwoofer box and had seen some guys make several different things(center consoles, overhead consoles, etc) with the same materials and thought I might be able to do the same with making my own seat.

I was also considering just putting a newer touring style seat that's all one piece, similar to the early 2000 ducati monster seats, so I could have an occasional passenger. Just thinking out loud, maybe I ought to start my own thread and not clog yours up

Personally, I love high mount undertail exhausts. My Virago conversion took a turn from the original plan to follow the Englebert bike after I saw Sepp Koch's builds. I happened to meet up with a dude who installs and builds auto exhausts and after talking about my XV conversion and some doodling on scrap paper, he was eager to help. He said he could easily build me the headers as long as I had the original flanges. WOOT!

Good news - my local supplier is back-in-action as of late last week and is thrashing to get caught up with this order.

Hoping to be able to start shipping kits (deposit owned ones first) by 8/25-26 ... I'll send the deposit owners an e-mail with their remaining balance ASAP.

Was literally just about to kick-off a (overseas) supplier ... cost was reasonable, but kits would have likely not shipped for another month.

Any possibility of using your rear wheel front wheel kit on a XV500? also what about just finding a front end from a sportbike instead?

This thread has been awesome to follow. I recently started looking for a new project for the winter and wanted to get a CX500 or 650. Then remember that my parents had an 82 XV500 in the shed with only 6000 miles on it. Its in great condition but one of the ugliest bikes ever! I'm looking forward to turning it into something that looks cool. 8)

The builders who want this kit are after the Englebert/Zero look. Personally, I'd like to do mine with some large diameter USD forks and a dual disc set-up and spoked wheels, but only the Euro bikes had those... and with chain drives to boot!

For me i think safety is a big one. I remember bringing the 500 up to about 90mph and the steering started to wobble a lot. Kinda freaked me out so when i got back i checked over the whole front end and couldn't really find anything that would have caused it. The only thing i could have thought it was, was the larger from rim and the angle of the rake. Besides I like the heavy braking so dual disc would be something I would really need.

I feel ya. I'm a sportbike rider going back to '95 and I totally believe in the superiority of anything sportbike i.e. tires, brakes, suspension, frame design, etc. Yeah, I'm biased For my conversion, I chose to use 18" XJ wheels at both ends and am hoping to not have to change the geometry too much. I never understood the large diameter front wheel configuration of vintage bikes. HD persists in this practice. Is it purely for aesthetics??? I understand the principle in mountain bike design, but not in street bikes. My '79 CB750 unfortunately comes with a 19" front and a 16" rear and it totally throws off the stance. I've shortened my forks 2" and still have to drop them through the trees just to get the bike to sit level. Very frustrating! The Virago forks may also have to be dropped through the trees, but I'll see how it looks after the kit is installed.

Anyone know what the diameter of the fork tubes are? are they all different between models?

That info is awesome! Pretty much answered all my questions for a different front end.

Cafe-XV750 can you still take orders for a rear to front wheel kit? not anytime soon but maybe is a couple months?

Of course I thought of one more. If staying with the stock forks. What has anyone done about the extra few inches sticking above the handle bars when lowering the front end?

Generally, you live with the look.

Lower them by internal spacer and then you don't have the tubes sticking up and even better, your front wheel can't cram itself into the bottom triple and launch you like a trebuche's stone.......

Be cool looking AND safe......really.

On the topic of 16 inch front wheels, whether it's for a 500, 750, 920 or whatever Virago you have, has anyone thought about using a 16" front from a FJ1100, FJ1200, early mid-eighties Honda Interceptors or even a Buell or something like that? A few different rim widths and spoke choices. Or maybe even backslide a little bit and use a 17 from a whole bunch of candidate bikes and get some really sticky and good rubber choices and some bigass brakes at the same time?
I'm just sayin'...
As for myself, I went with wide 18's front and back, radial tires and big brakes on my Virago. But then again, mine's chain drive.
Whatever you build, I applaud everyone's initiative, talent, individuality and drive. Remember, you're building your bike for you...and it doesn't matter a tinker's damn what anyone else thinks.

"Finally had it warm up enough around here to venture out to the garage and get the 3.5" lowered forks and front conversion on my bike. Also had the rear wheel off for painting and put it back on. Been cleaning/polishing and painting stuff too."



What is this conversion kit you speak of?

3.5 internal slam! wihtout damper bumps, wow man how did you pull that off without blowing seals? also how did you figure how much fork oil to run?
