Re: 74' CB550 WM-Style Build

No, that angle looks good. When you put the seat on, it will really look better. I thought the same when I did my rear hoop as well.

Re: 74' CB550 WM-Style Build

I agree, I think the rear hoop angle looks good, don't be to hasty to scrap it.

Re: 74' CB550 WM-Style Build

Wish I had done my rear hoop at more of an angle, I would leave it in my opinion.

really? is that how you did the hoop on the RD400?

I was trying to mimic this style... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_k8-5KGPymiU/SqAudAgTmsI/AAAAAAAAAB0/p3JDttB9MoI/s1600-h/sushi+dt350.jpg

I haven't built the seat pan yet as I need to weld the hoop on and then bend some sheet to get the angle. I am having problems figuring out seat pad design and angle. My goal is for the seat to be a 1.5 er so that the wife can occasionally ride. Do you have any mid-build pics Chris?

Re: 74' CB550 WM-Style Build

comparing the 2 seat hoops I think you are pretty close. The only thing is you have a sharp angle instead of the curve. I would leave it, it really does look pretty darn close from the pics.

Yeah, you're right Ryan. I had envisioned my seat pan following the contour but I think I am going to run more of a flat pan and then let the foam padding match the height in the back by the hoop. If I run a 2.5" thick seat on there, it should look just fine. I am also going to modify my rear fender to to be used. I plan to mount the tail light and plate off of it.

thanks for the comments man!

Re: 74' CB550 WM-Style Build

Everything I did to the RD400 is documented on my website. The trick is to do a flat seat pan and shape and sand the foam to suite.

Yeah, after my post I hit your site up and saw the pictures. My original plan was for the seat pan to follow the contour of the frame and hoop but with the angle I have, a flat seat pan will be sufficient. After taking some measurements last night, it should be just about right with 2.5" foam padding.

thanks for the feedback Chris!

Re: 74' CB550 WM-Style Build

Progress has been slow. I was very busy this past weekend with other things unfortunately. I should have some good things happening this week and weekend.

Last thursday, I was able to weld all of my items to the frame like the rear hoop, rear turn tabs, seat brackets, and battery tray brackets.

on to the pics!

Not the greatest of pics but I will get some better ones this week. I need to get the rear section of the frame painted now.

I also stripped, sanded, fixed my tank and will be laying primer on it this week too. I need to order the paint tomorrow.

Re: 74' CB550 Build

A few updates on the moto:

The steering bearings were so worn that it would "lock" itself straight forward. I pulled those out and swapped in a set of All Balls tapered roller bearings. Night and day difference.

The triples are actually gloss black but in this pic, it has condensation on it from freezing it to help with the bearing install.

A little mock up pic of with the clubmans

Finished all the painting. The front end paint will be cured and ready for reassembly this next weekend.

The paint came in for the tank and should be painted this week and my tires come in today and will be mounted and painted this week too!

Re: 74' CB550 Build

Wow...I have not been updating this thread. I wish the bike were done by now but unfortunately a busy schedule combined with my disease (procrastination) have been making this project roll along at a slower pace.

I have done quite abit. The seat pan has been made, foam added and wrapped with vinyl. The tires came in (Dunlop K70), mounted, and wheels are painted. The tank and headlight bucket are painted. I completely disassembled the forks, cleaned and rebuilt them with new seals. Yesterday I managed to finally get my wires ran through the clubmans. I am sure I am forgetting some but here are some pics of the progress. I will have to add some more pictures tonight.

Here is the initial layout for the seat pan. It is made out of .093 Aluminum that was laser cut to shape. I then used some PEM studs and pressed them into the pan after it was rolled slightly to give it some shape.

I did not want to try tackling my seat because I can't sew. There is a local shop that was recommend to me by Brad (Owned) that is right down the street from my shop. They were really good to work with. Since the bike was not able to be moved, he foamed the pan and then I took it home marked it, and we added some more. When it was wrapped, the foam pulled a bit and so it doesn't fit properly next to the tank. The upholster said to bring the bike over to him and he will make sure it fits right and fix it.

That's it for right now. I was hoping to have this thing running by now so I could head out to Troy's GTG next weekend but that isn't going to happen.

Re: 74' CB550 Build

I used Gloss Black Appliance Epoxy. You can get it Lowe's in the spray paint section. I also used it on other parts of my bike like the forks.

Here are some more pics. Mockup

That's looking really sharp man. Great job.

Thanks man...had some stuff come up last night and didn't make it to the garage.

Tonight I will be sure to snap pics and get them posted. The only other thing I have to do is watch Cafe Racer TV.

Re: 74' CB550 Build

Here are some updated shots:

The bars have all wires routed and are mounted. Repainted/remounted the gauge light panel and speedo/tach assemblies. 90% of wiring is done. Chain is on. Signals mounted. Mounted headlight bucket and ears. Painted the fork section between the triples with Truck Bed liner.

Still To Do:

Finish electrical
Replace Front Pads/Mount MC/Brake
Mount Carbs
Run Throttle/Clutch Cables
Mount Exhaust
Finish Seat and Mount
Build New Battery Tray
Fab bracket to mount taillight/license plate
Fill Oil
Start Testing and Tuning.

Looks great.

What kind of prep did you do on those rims before painting them?
