Hey

Story:

Few weeks back I had to have an emergency appendectomy. Healing sucked. Kept me from working on the bike for a few days, and from test riding it for a few weeks. I finally healed fully the end of last week, or at least was in good enough shape to finish up the bike to where I could test ride her. So this weekend I ties up a few loose ends to get her going and took her out for a few spins to see what I was working with...recent maiden* voyage seen below:

All is well and good, I'm happy my bike is running well, and she's loud as hell with just the headers, my new home made seat feels great, suspension feels tight...etc.

Well yesterday I spent all day cleaning, my house in hopes to finish up early enough to go to the rock gym and do some climbing. I the afternoon, about 3pm, right when I finish cleaning about to lay down for a rest my sister in law knocks on my door...She needs me to help break into her car because her kids are inside, car is off, it's hot and the key is locked in there as well. Wind blew the front door shut and she didn't notice right when she finished buckling my niece in to her baby seat. So I spend about ten minutes trying to break in with some various tools that aren't helping much, when I see the kids sweating pretty bad. They are under 1 year old and just under 3 respectively. So I'm really worried, my sister in law is freaking out. I grab a hammer and try to break the front passenger window. Took 8! really hard swings and didn't crack. So for number 9 I decide to give it my all...swing and crash the window breaks with the hammer...and my hand following through. Glass penetrates deep into three of my knuckles and also in between my thumb and index finger. I hide my hand from the kids but I'm spouting like a fountain. I don't feel much pain in my hand due to a previous glass experience that cut some nerves and required 15 stitches about 12 years ago.

My fiancé calls her boss, a doctor, he meets us at his office, cleans my wounds and stitches me up (three stitches without lidocaine because he didn't think I needed as many...though offered to give me the shot where I just said go for it.) So after working on my bike for three months and finally getting her good...I can't ride again due to medical emergency...nor can I rock climb, something I love to do. I'm pissed. That is all. (No pics of the hand unfortunately.)

Hey man, I understand that a lot things get in the way from what we enjoy doing. But think of it this way: You helped your sister. Not only that, you basically saved the lives her children. That's something to be happy about. You will heal in no time and guess what? Rock climbing and working on the bike will be so much better because you waited it out. You're probably learning one of the most important lessons in life as well: Patience.

Hang in there dude, all will be well. I'm really liking your bike, too. I'd like to see more pictures of it.

Yup, life sometimes brings frustration! No doubt about it!

Good for you for "doing something" and helping out in a very difficult situation! 8)

thanks!
I did forget to mention that with all hte back problems I've had over the years, I actually simply sneezed and threw my back out. Got a specialist appointment tomorrow, and a follow up to get an epidural. I really hope that my bulging discs don't become herniated.

Riding your bike doesnt bother the back?? Ya good on for taking charge and helpin out the family. You will recover soon and be back on the bike like nothing happened....

well my back was fine during those pictures (at least felt fine...I have had 3 bulging discs for years now) but I litterally threw my back out with a simple sneeze later that evening. I was going to lay daown on my couch when in mid-fall I sneezed and I tensed which caused me to straighten out my left leg and jarred my hips throwing my back out. June has just been a horrible month.

I felt good about helping my nieces of course. It's funny my one niece, Alexandra, who was in the car is really interested in my wounds. She keeps asking "quiero ver tu yaya?" (She's half Salvadoran.) The other one has no idea because she's not even 1 yet.

BTW - not sure if it's been asked - is that a climbing helmet you're wearing?

With the luck you're having, a full face helmet and full gear may be in order ;)

just got it in today actually.

The helmet I'm wearing in the pictures though is my skateboarding helmet. :) Another thing I do on a regular basis that I won't be doing for a little while now.

sounds like a rough month, man. hopefully july goes better for you.

that new helmet looks awesome, though. i was just about to buy a pilot style helmet (thisone)
not trying to derail the thread, but mind if i ask where you got it from?

Got back from the docs a bit ago. I have a sprained back! Sucks. Here's some pics of by bad hand:
