'76 cb360 cafe:ROUND 2...third times a charm!

checko

Been Around the Block
My buddy and I went to check out a '76 cb360 Saturday, and ended picking this gem up for a song and dance.

On Sunday started tearing it apart.

Yesterday Nick came over and we started molding the tank for the rear tail section.

IMAG1061_zps7f3a5383.jpg

IMAG1062_zpsb2dd7972.jpg

Still have to trim the back to fit the same curve as the hoop on the frame. I'm also waiting for my tail light to come in, as it will be flush mounted. It's a 2" round light.

IMAG1063_zps817533d7.jpg

That's it as of last night. Going to be laying fiberglass on the seat pan today. I also have a set of adjustable shocks on order. I will be lowering the whole bike roughly 1/2"-1" front and rear.
As for the rest of the bike for now:
clip ons
rear sets
pod filters, re-jet/rebuild carb
2-1 exhaust, making a sport bike shaped muffler
no rear fender (bikes missing a front right now as well)
new brake/clutch levers
grips
speedo only, no tach or neutral/high beam light
small turn signals
dual sport tires
paint (2 color scheme ideas 1.black/charcoal grey or 2. black/beige/bright red-orange)
tune up/brakes etc obviously

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

Nick and I got the seat pan laid out tonight.

Seat pan sits beautifully against the tank!

IMAG1071_zpsf674ba23.jpg

Once my tail light comes in, we can mount it in the tail section and make it fit the hoop on the back of the frame. Then its body work/primer time!

On another note, one of the flappers in the carb is rivited in place, vs being screwed. It wobbles around a bit. I'm going to have to drill out the rivits and tap the holes and put new screws in.

Bars came in today, took a few mins to put em on.

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

Good start man. Great to see ya dive right in. Looks like yoi may have a clearance issue with the frame "hoop" and your rear tire though.
Need to bottom out the rear suspension and make sure the tire won't hit the frame.

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

i have adjustable shocks on the way. my buddy has the same pair. they are pretty stiff. there is more than enough room

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

Got a few things done yesterday. I went to Jo-Ann fabrics with my ma to pick up supplies to make the cushion for the seat. Picked up some thin black vinyl, bright red strong thread and high density foam. Once the seat pan is finished being shaped, I'll be starting on the cushion.

IMAG1079_zps7a003428.jpg

I also grabbed this old Bell helmet that used to be my dads from my parents house haha

IMAG1076_zps9ef2304a.jpg

Today my dad brought over the welder him and my brother bought me for xmas. He also gave me a 3ft bottle of shielding gas full :)

IMAG0973_zps35f2fa18.jpg

Then he helped me set it up and on I went practicing for a little bit

IMAG1077_zpscd631b55.jpg

On a bad note (well it could have been worse) we took the head off my civic and found a valve with a chunk missing out of it :(

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

Here is the plate we decided to go with instead of the box for the electronics.

It will have more clearance being a plate on top of the frame.

I have to order 1" coped bungs to weld on the frame to mount the rear sets. I will be out in the garage later messing around with a few things. Oh I still need to get the measurements for the starter delete plug.

Stopped at buffalo rv on the way home from work and picked up this little battery, $22. And then when I got home my shocks came in. I have a few ideas how to mount them at the bottom, with them being an eye instead of clevis.

got the rear sets mounted today. they are off an R6

IMAG1094_zps1415e5c5.jpg

IMAG1095_zps79f7efaa.jpg

Nick brought over the fender off his bike and trimmed it down. I got the both ends he isn't using. I mocked up the front fender and eye balled a rear hugger fender

IMAG1098_zps2b0696b2.jpg

IMAG1100_zps6551741f.jpg

IMAG1099_zps5557f133.jpg

Nick then hacked off the eye on the bottom of the new shocks

IMAG1096_zps6e211d69.jpg

we then unscrewed the bottom off the shock. we are going to drill/tap the whole all the way through the cylinder and then put a little bolt through the clevis we cut off the old shocks. it will be bolted together to look somewhat like this...

IMAG1097_zps85941224.jpg

as the bike sits for the night

IMAG1101_zpsbc6721d0.jpg

For now I'm thinking of ditching the 2-1 exhaust and run straight pipes just past the rear sets with turn downs on the ends.

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

sweet so far, I'm in the process of my 74 build right now. what shocks are those?

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

thank you! they are RFY adjustable air shocks. I bought the wrong ones tho, there is a seller on ebay that has many different sizes with clevis mounts, which are the ones i should have got. it will work out with the ones i got. just looking for a 12x1.25 tap to finish making these work for me.

Nice! thanks for the info, I'm checking them out now

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

I finally got the tap I needed to make the suspension I bought work. The pic shows how its going to be done. I still have to cut the bolt that holds the clevis on and loctite it all back together.

IMAG1103_zpsac61632c.jpg

Here is the exhaust in planning.

The black turn-down piece was cut from the stock headers off the ninja500r I had a few years ago. They slid right into the headers on the bike now. I left a little gap and welded them in place. I then ground off the right on the header where the clamp holding the mufflers on would rest against.

both complete

IMAG1109_zpse76a7150.jpg

then I decided to pull the motor

IMAG1111_zps67340d81.jpg

then removed the swing arm and forks. this is how it sits for the day. I still have a few tabs I want to grind off and a few welds from previous tabs being cut off to grind away at.

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

Tank is looking good. I just finished prepping my frame for paint, have fun with that.

I didn't think I cut off that much, and then the first coat of primer showed me EVERYTHING!

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

after i strip my frame, i may do some light skim filler on some grinding spots. ill hit it with some etching primer to the bare frame. if it still shows ill end up hitting it with a few heavy coats of high build and it should be pretty straight

Re: '76 cb360 cafe

Looking good dude, just FYI, You shouldnt be applying etching primer that much over any type of filler or composite. Try to keep it to metallic seuraces only (Except aluminum, need a special etching primer for that.) The acid is the etch can eat into the filler and give ya issues down the line. Just a heads up, keep plowing along.
