CB125J 12V conversion stator problems

I've had my 76 Honda CB125J converted to 12V and it didn't work too well, it lasted a year and then the stator stopped working.
I've got two stators, one has higher impedance than it should and the other is earthing out in one of the coils as far as I can tell.
What I'm wondering is if I should buy a new stator for it or attempt to rewind one of the old ones myself? My main question is whether it would be worth winding it differently to get a higher output and have all 6 coils constantly active. Originally half the coils were inactive unless the headlight was on which caused a few reliability problems.
I'd be grateful if anyone could give me any advice on this, I've been trying to get the bike running nicely for nearly 7 years now add I just want it back on the road asap.
Thanks :)

Well if it's already broken, you (probably?) won't make it any worse by rewinding it yourself.

For what it's worth, the 12V conversion probably isn't related to stator failure.
