Nortons....

Time and money, lots of time and money...

Those two things solve almost everything.

I have spent more time then normal on this bike. Mainly because I am used to working on SOHC Honda bikes. I wouldnt say one is harder to learn, but clearly the mindset is different.
Lost time trying to apply a Honda way of thinking to a Norton.

As for the money I honestly think this Norton will turn out cheaper then a comparable SOHC CB750.
Service parts are a fair bit cheaper, and there are WAY less parts to deal with.

Coming along nice! It will all be worth it

I think that it will be.
Hope that it is a useable street bike. Plan to use it daily and just have fun with it.
Change of pace from the last bike, a DOHC CB1100F.

Parts are streaming in.
I plan to take the day off Wednesday this week to wrench, calling it a mental health day.

Brake parts.
Like I said before, still not 100% sure what front brake I will end up running. Cant hurt to have a freshly rebuild stock caliper though.

Clutch cable, because I am there anyway.

Finally some things are starting to go back together!
Installed the rear isolastics. WAY easier to install then the front.

Actually got into such a grove that I didn't take many pictures!.
Installed all the new swingarm pivot parts. Went together really well. All stainless with fresh O-Rings and bushings.

Cradle back into the frame.

The center stand was held on by a lug nut and stud.....so the correct hardware was acquired and installed.
Reminds me, I have to address the side stand.

Dog was indifferent as always.

Cleaned out the inside of the rear fender.
These little things make a difference to me for some stupid reason.

Hope to have the power unit back in the frame this week.
Fingers crossed.

Bought a few extra parts for the jobs coming up.

Clutch rod seal

And so fresh off the post, that I didn't even unbox everything. Also I am at the office and should be making sure the robots don't take over the world instead of playing with motorcycle crap.

In the box
-Petcocks
-Clutch (both plates)
-Head steady
-Rocker oil lines
-Full gasket set.
-Front sprocket
-Chain.

Have a few small things and one big thing still in the mail.

Do you work here?

It is all over now.
Started polishing some stuff!

Not going for the full mirror perfect look, but want to have a clean and uniform finish on the metal parts.

Have some rash to clean up. Again, not going to make it perfect as the bike is a "rider" but do want it better then it is.

Lookin nice! I like the buffed over mirror also, on most I even like the green pad finish makes cleaning a breeze.

Some work was did.

Was SHOCKED when I saw the frame mount for the head steady.

I would have sworn on anything that it was not cut into two pieces!

Once a bolt was loosened you could see the slit.
Kinda funny.

I know in the directions that it says that it does not bolt down tight to the frame.
But mine has a fair bit of slop when both bolts are tight.
Assumed that there would be a slight drag, but would hold itself in position....

This is the finish that I will end up with on the covers.

Rear fender
Tail light
battery box
Horn
Oil tank
Side cover
Oil filter

Not a whole lot, but it is stuff going back on the bike.
Plan is to sit this weekend and service the transmission and get that back in the frame first.

Spent most of the day painting, blasting, cleaning, servicing, polishing and generally messing around.

In keeping with the idea of "Mission Creep" I tackled the transmission.

No really good reason, no base line, no inspection before.
Just good old fashion "lets clean things and install fresh gaskets"
Oh to feel new at this again.

Really regret letting the selector ring and arm move.
Hope that the manual talks about that.

Gots gaskets though, and I am sure I have a manual somewhere.
Figure I have the internets, so I am all good.

Never actually have taken a transmission apart and put it back together.
This should be fun.

Back at it today.

Goal is to have more things go back into the frame today.

Well I think that everything went back together smoothly.

One think that struck me odd was that the external shift lever would move and actuate everything behind the polished cover, but would not put the transmission into gear.
I tried spinning things, but no dice.

Did this before I took things apart too.

I read a few things online and looked at the parts diagrams.
My check that everything went together correctly was to remove the gear detent thingy. That spring loaded screw that stops the selector at different gears.
When the device was removed I could manually move the quadrant and check that I could get to all 5 (4+N) divots on the selector and that neutral was neutral.
Other then that I cant see how to confirm things, honestly it seems like there is only one way to get everything together.

Will need to look up and buy the correct fluid before running everything.
Fresh O-Rings, gaskets and seals all the way around.

The complete gasket surely was complete!, and cheaper then a SOHC CB750 kit too!

Not a whole lot of pictures.

Empty case all cleaned out.

Trying to fiddle around with things.
Unsure if this is the exact way things went together, dont think they were.

New 20 tooth sprocket and all buttoned up.
Will trim the gaskets a bit too.

Even tossed it back into the frame. Mostly to feel good about myself and see things getting assembled.

Still a bit of work to be done, but getting there.

I know what you mean buddy, you make one thing look nice and then the thing next it to it looks worse so you have to make it look nice and before you know it your $300 job is hitting $3K. Looks like I'll be clearing some bench space for a Triumph motor build tomorrow. I'll be following your tranny build, need all the help I can get. Who knows, I might just get the confidence to tear down the H2 also and do the seals myself.

The trans really did seem fairly simple. Just something that I have never done before.

This bike is still going to end up very cheap for me so I am happy.
Most of the "mission creep" as been more time and labor, then actual money.

Well hell... a chunk of glass up front would set it off nicely

Wait, you got a fairing with it? What kind?

Gotta say I love the original bodywork as-is, too...cleaned up and detailed and waxed and all it will look fantastic with the metal polishing you are doing.

Not that you were planning on repainting; it is just great that the original paint has survived to the extent it has. Whole bike is a real survivor and it is cool to see it left as such.
