Hey guy’s. New to the forum, I have been looking around and trolling to see what some of you guys have built. I myself just bought my first Bike and I’m currently waiting to do some work on it( swap meet’s for new pipe’s and Harley fender’s). It’s a 1982 cb450SC (Nighthawk). Looking to do a bobber style of my Father’s 72 Shovel (picture below) One thing I would like to ask tho before I start throwing in all the time and effort into it. I’ve got my brother’s 1984 1000(1100? Forget) Virago sitting in the backyard with my bike and I wanna rip the front end off and slap that bad boy onto the Honda….. Giving it a different look compared to all the other cb450 bobber’s I’ve seen…giving the bike abit of a rake to it and the dual disk setup. If anyone knows off hand or someone that does. The lower tree shaft size of the Virago and will fit into the steering neck of the Honda i.e bearing sizes. I do know that I’m going to have to machine a shim because the steering neck on the Virago is 3/16’s longer then the Honda. Here is some photos of the bike and the exploded diagrams of the Virago tree shaft and the Honda tree shaft. I also have some photo’s of the front end’s + etc.

Dad's 72 Shovel Ol' Blue(Johnny cash bike, got a mix of years for parts, fender's etc etc)

Ignore the XVj920 above the Diagram, that's for the diagram above.=P sorry for the confusion

Lol, thanks guys. Weather has been kinda crappy the past while (since im working on the bike outside currently till we move some stuff around. Got the virago front end off, just waiting for a DECENT day to tear the Honda's off to see if the steering stems match. Will post photo's shortly.

Currently still hunting for a harley hinged electra-glide rear fender and Paugcho style Fish tails in rough condition (preferably so i can get the chrome off.) Got the bike ready for safety...since the Canadian laws really don't like you doing "Major" Mod's to the bike without paying the moeny for someone else to do so D=

If the front end doesn't work atleast i got a nice set of buckhorn bars=P We shall see in the next few days!

Sorry, its been along time since i posted anything about the bike (wasn't able to work on it all winter) Just started the project up a few days ago and got a swap meet coming up this fathers day weekend in Paris, Ontario. I started the tear down for the mounting of the rear harley fender and moivng the shock mounts (if i can't find a set of short sportster shocks.) Got some cone filters coming in next week to get rid of that p.o.s Airbox so i can also move the battery box inside the frame. It's gonna be slow going but....hopefully can get most of the mock up and mounting all finished before i head off to school so all ill need to worry about is paint and powder coating over the winter.....

Pictures don't show it but i also started tearing off the shitty stock mufflers and looking at getting a set of Fishtails at the swap meet if not, EBAY!=D I'll also be getting that Virago front end on to see if it'll fit since I'm just waiting to see what i can acquire for the bike at this swap meet.

Did the bar clamps from the Virago bolt up to the top triple on the nighthawk? Looking forward to see how your project turns out.
as for the bars, they do bolt on but the risers from the virago aren't high enough as the bars hit the tank but if that front end from the Virago works on the Honda i just need to move all the Tac's/ throttle and clutch from the other front end to the virago.

Can't go wrong, 25 bucks for the pair of Seat + passenger and 35 for that odd looking ferring but, it just caught my eye and had to get it.

Here's a few shots of us mocking up everything. Decided instead of running a Up-sweep on the pipes.gonna run em straight out, but was wondering what you guys think.

Just by getting everything mocked up, my father and i decided we won't need to lower the bike. Just by mocking everything up i can still run the stock shocks and not change the handling of the bike. Just gotta figure how i'm gonna mount a set of pegs farther up as you can see in the last picture.....the Mid controls aren't comfortable at all. I gotta change that front chrome fender tho....it just doesn't go with everything else. I KNEW i shoulda bought another front harley fender and bastardized it.

Are you going to chop the rear fender a little bit at the bottom? Having it sweep under isn't as pleasing to the eye. Just my .02

It won't be getting chopped but its not set in place exactly. Just Zip cut the junker Virago's rear fender mounts, just got to chop the Honda's fender mount's to fit the Harley fender a lot easier and looks wise it will be more appealing to the eye ( will post photos later once i start chopping the Honda.) Also it doesn't help with the small front fender....doesn't flow with the bike so that maybe why it looks off with the Rear fender "dragging" and not have the front do the same.

Yeah, that may be it, the front fender. I was just looking at that angle and it sweeps up diagonally into the bike and it looks odd, but like you said it was just "set" in place, so I'll hush up for now! haha ;)

I've got the rear fender mounts welded on. Tomorrow hopefully (depending on weather) ill get the fender and possibly the seats mounted if not i will be starting to make the front fender ( picked up a sportster fender to chop and make bigger.)

Finally an update, been busy with sorting out school/school loans just started 2 weeks ago. Haven't had much time to work on the bike but......been having a lot of great progress. Welded in the original mounts from the Harley fender (after cutting em) so i had a solid place to bolt to, strap brace installed on the nose of the fender for the front mounts (still need to finish the last bit for the mounts and the rear fender will be fully mounted so i can install the seat and taillight/signals.

The front fender is almost finished, i gotta do abit of patch work to make the "3 part" fender flow together smoothly, it needs some TLC with some pulling and pushing as the heat from welding has twisted it a fair bit. Just taking my time with it making sure i don't screw something major up and don't get frustrated with it, with what ever free time i get after work/school gonna do my best to keep working on this thing..... I'm not looking forward to having to work on this thing over the winter unless its just gotta be body work/paint LOL.

Did a little bit of work today, spent most of it trying to figure things out with the old man. Gotta stop getting so anal about things not being perfect, deff ain't easy making everything perfect without the proper shop, bound to have a few things not matching exaclty. But that's what a backyard projects bound to have =D. I thought i would post a few photos of some of the stuff i had done earlier that i didn't have pics for + what i had gotta done today.

It's getting there. :)

For sure dude, starting to finally not get so agitated and anxious to get it done...don't have a set time frame to get it done, tho i would like to get it on the road for spring and finally get to enjoy my first motorcycle =p bonus being i built it.
