Inserting a shameless plug here for the shop and fabrication work.

No shame in that! Everyone, meet the man behind the fab work.

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

More pictures of the monoshock fab work.

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

I will be ordering a slimmer/wider rear tire to match the front tire as well. Hopefully that takes attention away from the mismatched wheels. Powder coating the wheels the same color will help too.

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

looks pretty darn good i do think the seat/tail is a bit small anda couple inches too low 'specially at the tail
what will you do to strengthen the frame ? it really needs it what you have now is a flexy deal and it will break in half

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

I love what you've done witht then frame at the upper shock mount, and the subframe.

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

The tail is low on purpose. I wanted a straight line from the seat following the bottom of the tank line. I know most people shoot the tails up, but that's not the look I was going for. If the backend drops too much with the new tire and ride weight I will just drop the forks a little bit to make up for it.

The shock mount at the frame has more support under the tank that you can't see in the photos.

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

subframe is fine these guys are doing an excellent job with fabrication
the concern is the original tubes up to the backbone and the juncture of the bakcbone tubes
they all need strengthening
the basic frame has been weakened considerably and with the monshock the direction of suspension loads has changed at the same time the loading is much higher
basically the frame is a hinge right at the upper shock mount, now, and the downtubes from there to the swinger pivot will not handle the flexing and greatly increased loads of the new design
that is if it gets ridden

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

HBC-

Can we see more of the fab work under the tank, at the top shock mount? The guys that did that for you seem to know what they're doing.

Re: XS850 Cafe - Monoshock + Modern Front End

This isn't Luke's first rodeo. Next time I'm at the shop I'll get some pictures of what under the tank.

I understand what you're saying though BSA.

it is not really what is under the tank, it is the tubes up from the swinger, and of course where they tie in at the top, they have MUCH higher loads than what they were originally designed for now
the monoshock increases the loads on these a whole bunch and you have actually weakend the swinger pivot area as well, allowing it to flex more from even cornering loads, by removing the rear triangle
the monoshock is gonna flex those tubes and the area at the top ewhere the connect the backbone
the loads were TOTALLY different with the original suspension
if you are just gonna ride real slow you will be fine, but if you plan on riding hard at all then you really should try to understand what i am saying it is a safety and to a lesser degree a handling issue

I understand what you're saying but the XS850 frame is actually quite beefy compared to other bikes and shouldn't have any problem handling the load. I disagree that the frame has been weakened in any way. The only part I removed was the rear subframe, which would not have added very much strength to it's current setup. It could be argued that the tubes going to the old rear shock mounts would have provided some strength in the Fx direction but it would be minimal. Even the swing arm pivot point is extremely strong compared to other bikes. I'm leaving the gusset along the lower section of the swing arm pivot, which is 1/4" plate by itself. The radial load applied to that pivot point during corner should not increase dramatically. The shock is set at 25 degrees, so most of the force is travelling through the two top tubes towards the front of the frame where the steering head is met with five welded supports. I will be adding gussets to the frame where the vertical tubes meet the top tubes.

On top of all of this, another upside is that the bike's owner is below the average 850 rider's size and weight (no offense, Tyler).

sorry, you don't understand the forces, they don't go to the steering head, they go to the swinger pivot and hence is greatly stressing the vertical tubes and where they connect at each end
unlike the original setup which had only tiny suspension loads on the pivot and those tube connections

You think the tensile strength of the two 1" vertical frame tubes are concerning?

considering they will be constantly flexing which is of concern esp at the end joints, yes

At the swingarm pivot, they are welded and will have an additional gussets placed between the vertical tube and the horizontal tube under the engine. The rearset brackets are laser cut 3/16" plate, which will add some strength to that triangle around the swing arm pivot. Directly above the upper rearset stud, there is a cross tube connecting the two vertical tubes, which I could also gusset if it looks necessary.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I am doing a thorough job at adding strength to new geometry.
