so our shop was asked to participe in a charity/drinking event this coming saturday... we have to build a racing lawnmower to do an oval race, drag, and tug-a-war... so we have been putting in some time to get it rocking after we close up every day... figured since it is a cool ass project i would share some pics... we started this on monday and have to race it on Saturday
started out with a lawnmower and an old enticer i had laying around... my aunt actually bought this brand new in the 70's hahaha
from there we started on the rear end used a carrier out of a raptor 660 and took some alum stock and tapped it as well as added bracing and welded it up
then for the carrier main beam support
shaved the wells
rear end test fit (rear axle and sprocket from 660) wheels are off a yamaha quad and some old tires we had around the shop
then pulled the sled motor and dropped it in for mock up
we are naming the quad smokin' grass so of course we had to toss some green powder into it
this vintage secondary opens rev to normal so we had to work on mocking that up
... welded a sprocket to it, then tacked up a brace to get our alignment

cut and re welded on the spindall arms for the tie rods
ooh it is not all fun and games... been working 8am - 3/4am daily... have to keep up on the shop work and work on this at night. sweat though 5 shirts at work yesterday hahahaha... will be worth it in the end! plus it is fun to work on something that does not have to be just spot on show quality ya know, just fun to make something out of nothing
Sled motor is a 340 entircer motor (fan cooled) runs a 32mm Mikuni carb... we ended up doing a 10T front sprocket and i think a 38 on back... i am thinking mid upper 50's - 60's or so but we can also play with gearing to see... we have to keep the gearing middle of the road on this one... we have a tug - a - war, oval track, and drag race... the shops participating we do powder work for and they build 100k super cars...so i am sure they are going to come with their a game... i know many of them are running 22hp NOS brigs motors... so it should be a fun event... we hope to be able to do testing this fri to check our gearing and what not... race day is sat at 1pm and i plan on being a bit tipsy by then! hahaha
i was going to put an ex500 kawi motor i have here in the bike... but with only a week... we had to play it safe... this winter i got the sled running really strong so we know it is reliable and running, plus it is a super light motor and tiny... at about 32hp at 6,500 RPM, it should work out pretty good. plus with this set up we can use the centrifugal clutching that the sled has so we do not have to worry about switching though gears... and the braking works right off the clutch as well so we do not have to make brake lines for calipers or anthing like that... we mocked it up with a CB350 motor as well but after thinking about it, the sled motor was a great go to... till we realized the secondary opens in reverse to what normal sleds do... but we made the changes and will see where that puts us hahaha
