Vintage Privateer Smoker (RD350 Race Bike)

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Decided to try my hand at building my own seat. Going to try fiberglass, figure if a bunch of 1/2 wits can do it I should be able to. Used cardboard and drywall corner bead for the seat base, cut some foam and stacked it before calling it quits. Foam is to big on all sides so it's not a great representation. I'm just not sure how I'm going to build a seat hoop with the seat design. Maybe someone smarter than me can help with that later.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

This must be what happens when one has a near-unlimited quantity of beer at one's disposal

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Great start! Always nice to see another bike with a full fairing planned!

Have you had any thought to the shape of the tail? Sticking to the TZ as inspiration?

Looking good jordo. Are you making a pop form or just one off?

Current plan is a one-off. Cant you make a mold off of a completed one?

As far as the seat, im going for one similar to this one from air-tech.

These just came in as well, pretty good deal on eBay. Will need them shortly when we starting mocking everything up to get the frame finished.

Sure. Just buy one, make a mold and send it back. It's all the rage.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

I like that seat design. With a mold, it will be the size of your form. If you use you form as the mold the seat will be bigger all around. May not be an issue, just keep that in mind when carving. When I carved mine I made a template I could run across the top part that helped me get the top level and uniform. For the fine sanding/carving I literally used my hands on the foam. Worked reall well to soften the edges up.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

If you mock it up in sketch up or the like, you can print out curves to use as templates to make sure the sides come out evenly

That sounds fancy, I've tried to use sketchup before and it didn't turn out well. I may try to give it another try because it sounds like a good idea.. Else, meh..

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

You could always just sketch it free hand full size and cut it out. Use it as a template the same.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Decided to cut it out of hardboard to be cool. Jigsaw broke in the middle, took it apart cleaned it, used it another 15sec and it broke again. Cut the rest out with a box cutter. Should have used cardboard.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Watch out for those damn dirty two strokes. They breed like monkeys. Start with just one it's OK, but if you have two they just start to multiply and soon they take over your shop, your life and they turn whatever funds you have into a black hole that just sucks things in to never reappear.
