Lighted plate for safety - Ontario?

Probably a dumb question, but I need to get it straight before I cut open my taillight housing and try to get the thing to shine down onto the plate....a big hassle if its not necessary, but I am 99% sure I need the plate lit. .?.

license plate illumination is mandatory for a safety in Ontario

try these before cutting up you tail light

I just angled my plate backwards, and the taillight does enough to keep me from being pulled over. It is lit in red, but it is lit and that's what counts.

I know the application is different, but you may be able to get the same effect. Mine is not red during the day at all.

I'll see if I can get a night picture, my camera doesn't work well in low light though.
