1968 Suzuki T500 Cobra

So Matt is Murray doing the welding for you or are you? Doing a good job whomever is doing it.

I am not doing the welding. But my source must remain anonymous. I have been sworn to secrecy. :)

More welding on the upper case.

I also refurbed the left control switch. This switch is one I got off eBay for a later model (the '68 switches are very hard to find), so I didn't want to put too much effort into it, since I'll be replacing it with the proper ones at some point.

I disassembled the whole switch and cleaned up the contacts and the housing. The wiring all looked good, so I didn't mess with that at all. A couple of hours in the tumbler, some soap and water, and then a light buffing is good enough for me.

Thanks. The tumbler did a lot of the hard work and I'm still surprised by how much soap and water can get done. I think I only spent an hour at it?

Well, that figures.

I found this on eBay today.

The same principle applies to when you insure your bike, weather goes for a dump. If you had not polished the one you have, this would never have come up for sale. It's the "Completion Backwards Principle".

Just kidding :)

Man nice work on those cases. I would have been on ebay in about 1min buying a new 1/2. Thankfully motors is something I have extra of when I start mine.

The last of the parts should trickle in over the next week or so.

The reproduction badges arrived yesterday.

The engine is just about done. Powder in most places, but the side cases were doing a weird outgassing thing and screwing up the finish. They've been stripped down again and they're currently bare. I'm going to see what I can do about finishing them in some other way. I don't really feel like polishing aluminum every few weeks for the rest of my ownership period.

Looks great Matt. too bad the side covers are giving you grief. With the vapor blasting you'd think any oil would be gone.

That was the hope, but aluminum might be more porous than I thought. Maybe some high temp baking? Any guesses on a safe temp?

Damn. Don't think my oven will get that hot.

it should on the self cleaning cycle, Or maybe a gas grill. My Little Weber will hold 600. Just cool them slooowly... reduce the temp to 400 then 200 then turn it off....
