Suzuki TS185 Left Turn Build

CaferacerMO

Been Around the Block
You read it right..
From what I can tell, no one has used this as a platform before, which is kind of fun.

The other day I picked this 2003 YZ85 for 200 smackaroos.

It needs a top and bottom end rebuild, but these engines are stupid easy (and cheap) to work on.

I originally was going to go for the mini supermoto type build, when I thought "how cool would it be to make a little street scrambler out of it"..
It also possesses the right frame back bone to make adapting a metal tank easier.

The game plan: rebuild the motor and get this sucker squared away mechanically

Wheels: replace the rear to a 17 to match the front, make it a 3.5" for some beef in the rear and throw street tires or mild knobbies on (may not be an option due to the already tight fit on the swing arm)

Find a tank that jives well with the size, then try and find the right stance.

That's all I have game plan wise for now, I can't do anything cosmetically until I figure out a tank anyways, and from there the rest follows.

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

Maybe a xr100 tank would do the trick?

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

The tank mock up was just for fun, here's it with a dt175 tank on it that is much better

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

I got it that it was just for fun. That does look normal at least. Man those are long front forks.

Here: I just shoehorned a XL185 motor in a 2006 RM85

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

Snagged a tank from a Yamaha trail for 40 bucks.
Near perfect, two small dents..
May run it, may not.
It's different, but that's sort of what I want.

I also have the rim in, still need spokes.
It's a 17x3.5...

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

Sometimes you take left turns in builds..

And here we are.

I picked up a 1978 TS185 for a hundred bucks, got it home, and it was as simple as pouring in new gas and kicking it.

It fired right up and idled fine..

I then decided to sacrifice the yz and take front end off to swap onto the ts.

I'm now waiting to try and find tires for these weird wheel sizes, as well as find tapered bearings in the right size.
The stem appears it may cut it close, but be long enough to suffice.

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

Your going to need a different swing arm to use the wide rim
Swapping YZ forks onto TS is a great move as TS really needs better suspension (needed even back in the day)

Yeah, now I just have to figure out the OD of the neck on the TS, there seems to be next to no info on these suckers..

I also can't figure out what tire size will fit these odd duckling wheels..

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

This is my next task..

The front wheel is a 17x1.40
The rear is a 18x1.60..
I know nothing about tire sizes.
Will any of these sizes work for the front, or rear?

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

Q. What sort of tires are you looking for? Off road or street? Off road ie replacements should be easy to find. 1.40 x 17 front - almost impossible in a street compound/tread.

This is true..
I'm wanting street but I know that's next to impossible.
I would be open to enduro/light knobbys. Just trying to avoid full on dirt tires.

Re: Yamaha YZ85 Mini Scrambler

Front tyre is dead easy, Honda C50~90 size, 2.25x17

This may be a viable choice if I can find something similar for the rear

Is there a way to get the OD off the upper and lower bearings, even though it is a loose ball style bearing and not tapered?
I have scoured the internet as well as tried all balls, called the Suzuki dealership, and tried every search term possible to find the OD, there seems to be no info on these TS model bikes.

I am trying to get the OD on the upper and lower bearing to match with the ID of the YZ85 triple.
I have seen someone do a swap with a YZ80 front end, so this has to be doable..

Any ideas?
