I got a 17yr old Kohler CV25 in my garden tractor that has started smoking the other day.

Im pretty good about maintenance on this thing. Fresh oil and filter, air filter and oiled pre-filter, fuel filter this past spring.

At first it was just little puffs of smoke every now and again. Checked oil and found it was a bit low by 1/2qt. (10w30 full synthetic) topped it off.

I replaced breather oil seperator and breather tube to carb. Didnt help.

I topped the oil off and mowed w it again after an hour (1 acre) shes almost 1 qt low.

blowing some smoke all the time, but bigger puffs when making turns.

Hoping she dont need rings. Going to dig into her this weekend for blown head gasket.

But, there is a reed valve inside the head between the lifters. I was wondering if anyone knows how often the reed valve fails and would this cause smoking and heavy oil consumption?

Re: Kohler engine experts needed. Please

I havent done a compression test yet. I dont know if I can. It believe may have the starting pressure release. To make starting easier.

She still runs strong w plenty of power. And start right up good.

Re: Kohler engine experts needed. Please

Found this bud, haven't personally messed with that engine but its likely. Course after 17 years of mowing it could just be plum worn out too.

Yep exact same problem and hoping for a blown head gasket.

OK I think right cylinder may be suspect. Sorry right plug is pictured on the left.

For the left...170+ aint bad.

11494-190816201427-2254506.jpeg

For the right...WTF? Ha Ill take 180+

OK now I dont know everything...So, what this is telling me is. It may not be a blown head gasket??? I dont have a leakdown tester.

So I will suspect that little reed valve (I have no idea what it does.) MAY be whats blowing the oil.

If so, Not including the $100.00 gasket kit. The reed valve is like $1.50 fix.

#4 in the pic.

OR worn valve guides. OR ????

Re: Kohler engine experts needed. Please

However, every article Ive read & every youtube vid...more than one...says blown head gasket.

None say anything else.

Re: Kohler engine experts needed. Please

Funny, I literally opened the thread just now to say exactly the same thing.

ALL I read is "ALWAYS REPLACE HEAD BOLTS". As Kohler uses head bolts that stretch.

Re: Kohler engine experts needed. Please

If everything is full of oil, you can still get high compression numbers.

Re: Kohler engine experts needed. Please

Top of cylinder looks fine.

Reed valve is fine. Located between lifters.

Carefully peeled head gasket from head and flipped it over.

HA! FOUND THIS!!! HOORAY!!! Maybe a 1mm inclusion.

Re: Kohler engine BLOWN HEAD GASKET!

OK, here is the question. Do I replace BOTH head gaskets or just the one???

Re: Kohler engine BLOWN HEAD GASKET!

After texting w Deviant, decided to push forward. Not gonna mess w 2nd head gasket at this time.

So got things cleaned up a bit and ready for assembly after lunch and a nap.

Re: Kohler engine BLOWN HEAD GASKET!

Nice and clean. Yeah i wouldn't mess with the other one - save the gasket in case it happens again (hopefully not) and the grass might start getting overgrown if you have it apart for too long ;D

I told Eric (deviant) if it happens again, its not like its gonna strand my family 200mi from home. ;)
and in reality it hasnt been too bad a job. Its mostly just removing 800 heat shields.

Re: Kohler engine BLOWN HEAD GASKET!

Wont be able to get too much re-assembly time tonight. Jason and Tuesday came home to celebrate Jasons 21st Birthday. ;D
