I recently got my 1980 Xs1100 running for the first time in years. A few blocks from my house as i was going from 2nd gear to 3rd, it just popped into neutral. I pulled over and now the shift lever does nothing. It moves up or down but do not feel any gears. The motor runs fine. The clutch feels normal. But it is stuck in neutral. Any one have any insight to offer?
Oh Shit!
I don't have an 1100 but I do have a couple of XS750's that have in the past had issues with loosing 2nd gear. But to loose all gears is not a normal failure for these boxes. Have you checked the final drive? Has something let go there rather than the gearbox?
I would slip off the rubber boot at the swing arm pivot and see if the shaft is turning?
If nothing turning, then time to pull the sump and see what is happening with the shifters. The gear leaver cranks a link that indexes the shifter drum. To get to that link I think you have to split the cases!!!!!!!!
Hopefully there is someone out there with an 1100 that has better experience than me.
