Ah yes, my old stomping grounds, I still live northeast of Lawton/Ft. Sill about 45 minutes, my home office is just north of Lawton. There's plenty of things depending on what you like to do.
Artillery Museum on Post, lots of rockets and big guns as well as some of the older buildings, post has been around since the 1800's. There's lots of old stone building all over post if you fancy that. Geronimo's Grave, yes that guy is buried here, is short drive out on post. American Indian history is really thick around here, you can't walk without stepping on some, Medicine bluffs are another thing to see, sacred place for medicine men and suicides back in the Indian wars.If you are lucky, you might get to see some stuff getting shot, most ranges are up and running all week, big guns out west, Rockets on eastern side.
Lawton has plenty of shopping, all the usual places to eat, steakhouses, Mexican food, Italian, Korean, German, even Greek food. NOT much will be open on thanksgiving, I used to eat at Cracker Barrel on Thanksgiving day, because it was open and the food isn't bad. Black Friday is 1000000% insane, I would go do something else besides be in town. There are few Casinos, Comanche Nation which is one of the largest in the area, Comanche Spur is just north of Lawton recently redone. There area few little rinky dink museums, none of them really worth mentioning. There are a few bars and clubs around as well, Scooters is one of the larger ones, Railhead Saloon is dive that at least has decent local bands play now and then. Beer around here sucks, its all 3.2 out of the tap, Lawton does have some really good liquor stores that have beers and liquor from all over the world because there's plenty GI's wanting it.
North of Lawton as mentioned is the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Its a nice drive you can easily kill a day, plenty of so called mountains, forests, buffalo, longhorn cattle, deer, elk, and other critters to look at. Drive to the top of Mount Scott, its worth it for the views. Trees are still holding their fall colors, on the west pastures you might still get to hear the elk bugle if you are out there at the right time. There is also Medicine Park, kind of a hippie/hipster town that's known for its Cobble stone buildings, they took round orange granite rocks and stacked them one on top of each other and cemented them in place. There are a couple of restaurants, both have good food, there's a few little shops as well. There a few lakes around as mentioned, its pretty damn cold now so no real need to say more.
Oklahoma City is an hourish drive north east, bring cash as its a toll road. The OKC Zoo is decent, Oklahoma Science Museum is right next door, should be some horse races this weekend at Remington Park, which is pretty much right next door. Bricktown is pretty cool, its the old part of town, has plenty of food, prolly some of the best places for beer. Myriad Gardens, Art Museum, Railway Museum, list goes on and on. If you like basketball might be able to get Thunder tickets for Friday, they play the Knicks. If you do go, make sure to see the Oklahoma City National Memorial there's a reason why we hate terrorism. Its hard not to hate those kinds of acts when you see what it does..
I know that's a lot to go through, but there are plenty of things to do. Weather looks to be pretty decent for the next week, we've had crap for the last 3 weeks. Should be 60's during the day maybe 30-40 at night so bring a coat. If you need anything shoot me a PM, phones always on.
