im trying to get my 1972 cb 750 registered in ny. someone told me that all you need is a bill of sale on motorcycles pre 1975 also you need to show ownership for the past 4 years? if anyone has information on this please let me know! im not sure if it would be more advantageous to register in Vermont or not? supposedly having a pre 1975 bike is the loophole? I am also having trouble decoding this vin -cb7502007486 any help would be appriciated

Not sure if this is too late, but perhaps I can help. The actual "title" for a 1972 and earlier vehicle in NY is a transferable registration. You simply sign that over to the new owner.

As for getting a title/transferable registration - it won't be possible in NY unless you have an in/out of state title/transferable registration from the prior owner.

My suggestion would be to register or title the motorcycle in Vermont following the steps outlined in the below link...then, transferring registration to NY and registering it here (and getting a new NY title/transferable registration). It'll cost a bit to pay sales tax on both transactions, but not too bad since the bike is older.

thanks man i'm almost certain that was the form i was looking for! i herd there was a loophole for classic vehicles which mine just barely falls into!

You need an inspection no matter what the year.

Alright here's a super late udate. The registration of a pre 1972 vehicle all you need is a bill of sale and to have owned it for over 1 year. They never issued titles with 1972 and older vehicles. So its just that easy! I'm currently sending a different bike through the Vermont system, I'll keep you posted on that as well
