I just thought I'd toss this out there as you guys live in that general neck-of-the-woods. :)

My wifey and I are going to take a little late spring/early summer "get away". Somewhere not too far, but a little different too. 8) We'll likely head out for 4 or 5 days in mid-May. :) This is a NON-BIKE trip. :( :p

I'm wondering what there might be to do, in and around Pittsburgh. 8) It's just about the right distance from Toronto and I've been there once a while back for a boat race weekend on the river. 8)

We're into interesting food establishments, music, quaint shops, old architecture, history... you know... touristy things. :D

Post-up if you have any ideas. Thanks! 8)

Bro... What ISN'T there to do in Pittsburgh is an shorter answer. ;)

There have a been a TON of new restaurant popping up lately. The Lawrenceville and SouthSide neighborhoods are lousy with food. From street vendors and hot dog joints to high end fancy pants stuff. My food recommendations:

http://www.churchbrew.com/
http://www.piperspub.com/
Gooskis (dive bar with the best pirogies in tahn)
https://www.primantibros.com/ (go to the original location in the Strip)

Those are just the tip of the iceberg. You could 20 meals a day amd not eat at the same place twice in the city. Again, there are so many new and upstart eateries it's nuts. It's also one of the best cities around for walking/biking so I'd suggest just wandering and exploring. You'll find something great on every block.

As far as music, you'll be hard pressed to find a better city. Check out places like the Thunderbird (lots of blues and rock) in Lawrenceville, The 31st Street Pub (punk and metal) in the strip, Mr. Smalls (bit of everything) in Millvale and even Stage AE (larger, more popular acts). A good number of the bars have local acta playing almost every night of the week too. The City Paper has great weekly concert listings.

When it comes to shopping the Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Oakland, Downtown and Lawrenceville sections are full of small locally owned shops. Venture a little outsode of the city and hit up Sewickly as well. Beautiful small town (and a number of the Penguins live there so you may run into Lemiuex or Crosby).

When it comes to old architecture and history, all you need to do is walk out of the hotel and open your eyes. Pittsburgh is one of the most historically significant cities in North America and it's people have a great sense of pride in that fact. Downtown is home to some of the mpst beautiful buildings and civil architecture around. Check out the courthouse, the Theater District and surrounding areas. We have a ridiculous number of museu,s as well. There's the Heinz History Museum in the strip for local and regional things. The Carnegie museum of Art and Natural History in Oakland. The Aviary and Phipps Conservatory. The Science Center is super cool (and has an IMAX theater). The Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece "Fallingwater" is under an hour from the city as well.

A few really cool touristy things you'll want to do include riding the Incline from Mt Washington to Station Square (where you'll also find a number of shopping amd food destinations), taking a Ducky Boat tour, and catching a show at the gorgeous Benedum Center.

There really is so much to do here it's crazy. I'll get some more info and whatnot together fpr you. The stuff I've mentioned doesn't begin to scratch the surface. If you have any real specific questions, PM me and I'll get ya my number.

Oh, you can tour the Cathedral of Learning on Pitt campus as too. It's a marvel of gothic architecture and an all around interesting building. If you're into churches there are a number of beautiful old ones in the city.

Ah... Penn Brewery is a must too. German style brewery and restaurant in a 100+ year old building.

Oh... And if you can... Drive into the city from the North through the tunnels at night while you're here. Best view ever.

Gee... too bad there's nothin' to do in Pittsburgh...

I was really hoping to spend some fun times there. ;) ;D

People that live in Pittsburgh love Pittsburgh. It really is a great town. Western PA is the friendliest place I've ever lived.

I was there for a weekend crewing for a buddy at a tunnel boat race on the river back around '05 or so. I have to say, I was impressed. :D I think it would be a cool place to live. :D

Word. I checked it out this past summer when visiting my friend. My art history course that I thought would have very little use in my life proved to be what made seeing the Cathedral that much more interesting.

Shit up you sexy douche bag.

That's just creapy talk. And yes Mike works for Pittsburgh tourism without pay. Now I want to make the family vacation be to Pittsburgh this summer and have it happen to fall on the mid ohio weekend.

If you are looking for some outdoor stuff to do for a day check out Ohiopyle State Park, it is PA's largest state park. It's about an hour southeast of Pittsburgh. Whitewater rafting, hiking, biking. Two of Frank Lloyd Wright's houses including Fallingwater. A couple bars, places to eat.

Just when you think you have heard it all.

On another note, Mike must type "shit" an awful lot seeing how his autocorrect, corrected it to that... Or did he mean that...that is the question gentlemen!

Well, you guys are amazing!! I really am going to visit Pittsburgh soon , but it won't be this May. :p One of our boys and his family just relocated back to Louisville, KY, so we're headed there this time around. 8)

Thanks for all the tips and recommendations!! 8) I'll be headed down there one of these days for SURE! :D
