Ducati 900ss carb to EFI conversion

Been Around the Block
Just thought I'd start a thread, it'll give me some motivation to take some pictures. Should be a fun project.

first order of business was to replace the carb manifolds with ones that would fit the throttle bodies, that was easy, about $150 on ebay got the throttle bodies, injectors, tps sensor and manifolds. second order, more challenging, the efi version uses the cam gear to send a timing signal to the efi computer, the efi one has a machined gap on a couple of teeth, which trigger the crank sensor, so I'll be using dimensions from the efi gear to machine a gap in the carb type gear. not sure how precise it needs to be but I'm able to hold it within .001" or so relative to the keyway, which isn't all that precise anyway.

and if it was installed correctly and loctited, the nut holding the rotor and flywheel on is a real bear to remove, I made an aluminum clamp tool to hold the rotor gently but firmly so I wouldn't be bending against the crank or trying to jam something in the gears

just saw that machining the carb type gear isn't an option, since the teeth are fully engaged with the gear on the crank, the efi type only engages part of the face, the cutaway is on the part of the face not touched by the gear on the crank, no biggie though, found a set of two matching gears from an efi version on ebay for $25

just using the magneti marelli ecu, I found some freeware and figured out how to hook it up to my laptop for remapping, they're cheap and no adapting needed.

That sounds cool. Can you post more info on the software?

made some more progress, got the crank gear to match the cam gear and installed it, looks like it should work just fine, also lightened the flywheel while I had it open, figured why the hell not... drilled and tapped and faced the crank position mounting boss, nice that they made the castings ready for the efi stuff, a lot easier for me to change it around.
